To Mr Farrar thanks for allowing me to indulge myself in a little spleen venting from time to time, mostly enjoyable, but I am so much over the usual suspects.

I will vent my spleen at the ballot box from here on in, when I find a true center right party. Any body going to front up?? Thought not.

Me I am far to busy trying to catch up with Cactus and my NZ hero Mr Hart.

The spiteful nature of the blogosphere just does my head in…..(plus I have been off the smokes for 48 hours)

Maori board heads to court as council takes machete to budget

The Maori Statutory Board is going to the High Court today to challenge a decision by the Auckland Council last night to slash its budget.

Councillors voted narrowly to cut its budget for the rest of the financial year from $2,066,000 to $950,000 and from $3,435,500 to an indicative $1.9 million in the 2011-2012 draft annual plan, which is up for consultation.

But moves to cut this year’s budget to $850,000 and defer the 2011-2012 allocation until the Government clarifies its intentions for the unelected board were defeated.

“Our reading of the law is that, if our proposed costs are reasonable, the council has no discretion about meeting those costs, so tonight’s council decision is probably in breach of the law.”

Job scheme pumpkin costs thousands

The Government has ordered an investigation into allegations that hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars were paid to community work schemes that produced few tangible results.

A Community Max scheme for a Far North vegetable garden reaped only one pumpkin, it was alleged last night. The four-acre project – pitched as employing eight unskilled young workers with two supervisors – was part of a range of projects, including clerical and conservation work, undertaken by the “Social Development Services” organisation. It was given a $317,278 subsidy to employ 24 workers.

Another project, arranged by the City on a Hill Christian Church charitable trust in Kawerau, won $46,276 in funding to make linen for a marae. It got only as far as altering some secondhand clothes.

How many Nat voters at the last election voted for a National Maori Party?

I hope a few National supporters see the light and wake up to the fact that Key and Finlayson are giving the game (and everything else) away to the racists.

The unholy alliance between the Maori Party and Labour-lite cannot continue.

Why in 2011 are the new mayor and his supporters on the Auckland Council so determined to elevate the importance of race in the city?

Auckland is a vibrant, cosmopolitan and multicultural city. And it has been for some time now. Everyone gets along fairly well.

We work and eat together; we intermarry. Everyone has an equal vote in this one of the world’s oldest democracies.
So what is to be gained by breaking our democratic principles to give votes on council committees to unelected and unaccountable Maori appointees, and then to accede to a very substantial budget to a new Maori Statutory Board?

What is the model that we’re emulating? Fiji’s Great Council of Chiefs? An unelected group from one ethnic group, and possibly a network of families, making political decisions in the city.
