Look at that bastard Ring lapping it up in the photographs with his black cowboy had and large thermometer/magnifying glass props.

I never saw the Sainsbury interview (or the Campbell one) because those shows are terrible. But it doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that Sainsbury didn’t ask any questions of the Ring supporters (different from a ring pessary). I’ve always wondered who Sainsbury’s fans are – he’s just so useless.

There’s a Microsoft Phone scam going around the Manawatu – Look out!
Got a phone call at 8:50PM last night from an Indian sounding chap saying “They were from Microsoft and were calling because our computer was detected as downloading pirated software that might have a virus”
Our phone line was so bad I left him on the phone for about 5 mins before hanging up.
Its a scam where they try to redirect you to a website that downloads software. Once the software is on your machine they can start copying / looking for information.
It’s apparently been going through Australia the last few months.
If you get a call like this HANG UP!!!

Challenge to the animal rights crowd.

Watch Waka Huia this am on TVNZ1. Mutton birds hunting demo. Animal caught and then trussed by it’s leg to a branch ,while the indigenous hunter demonstrates on the live animal his snaring techniques.

No caged pigs and chickens, OK, what about cruelty to these birds?

And talking of hypocracy, while I’m delighted to see Gadafy get his comeuppance,the excuse is pathetic. Since when has the UN intervened in tribal warfare? Will Somalia be next,and then Bahrain ,Yemen and Turkey? Didn’t think so.

It’s OK cos the world’s most corrupt international body, the UN ,says so. And Gadafy has lost legitimacy to rule by killing his own civilians (who are trying to over throw him) .Now that we have established that killing your own civilians is cause for legitimate intervention by the UN who’s next?

Personally I’m going to enjoy reading the comments of numerous leftists around the world and here in NZ. Eating crow would seem too mild an expression.

I guess this is what community organising looks like on a global level, even though George W Obama only finally acted after a surprise “I won’t be back” interview from his State Secretary, plus numerous Clinton aide leaks along the lines of “she’s had it with his inability to make up his mind”. I’m going to love watching the spin the Obamites try on this.

Key question: is Barry a neoconservative or just Cheneyesque? The attacks started on the exact day of the Iraq attacks eight years ago.

IT’S NOT just the people of Christchurch shaken up by the quake. The National Party seems to have lost some of its moral-political bearings too.

First, it’s dishing out cash to rebuild an uninsured part of a debt-laden business. Next, it’s cooking up a subsidy for predominantly well-off rugger fans to enjoy a boozy weekend up north. What happened? Weren’t we supposed to be “tightening the belt” and throwing every last dollar that dropped out towards rebuilding Christchurch’s infrastructure and sheltering those made homeless?

In the coming days, the government will be whipping up a deal with Air New Zealand to get Christchurch people up to Auckland on the cheap so they can see the Rugby World Cup quarter-final they have lost to the quake. It sounds nice but when you think about it, whoever could afford the $490 ticket in the first place could surely find a few pennies for a return flight to Auckland.

hj – If Ted Thomas wanted to use the sign to embarrass Winston Peters he would have pledged a few grand with David Farrar, which would have been far more cost effective on his part than bidding against David Farrar & co.

Anyway take a look at David’s by-line “fomenting happy mischief”. Winston Peters did not like the idea of the sign being waved around at his meeings and got all bitter and twisted over it. Even worse, he attempted to ‘transfer’ his dislike to the people of Christchurch regardless what they may have thought of David’s attempt to buy it – but it is doubtful there would be any argument over $10,600 going to help journos and their families in Christchurch. Anyway the idea to sell it came from Press Gallery journos, not David Farrar or Whale.

Top officer kept claims secret

New Zealand’s second most senior police officer did not act on allegations about a former colleague’s relationship with a senior civil servant which later led to a criminal investigation.

Deputy Commissioner Viv Rickard was given a letter by State Services Commission executive Deborah Te Kawa containing detailed claims about the events following the break-up with her married lover. The lover was former police headquarters superintendent Jon Moss, who left police in 2009 amid a scandal over an affair with a junior police officer. He had been overseeing internal inquiries as manager of professional standards.

Rickard had the information for almost two months before Commissioner Howard Broad learned of the allegations in June 2010.

National must pull the curtain on Hide’s Act

Come November, will National destroy its brand by relying on Rodney Hide – again – to form a government? The man who knowingly allowed an MP into Parliament who’d stolen a dead baby’s identity? Or will the National Party faithful tire of Act’s antics and select a strong candidate of their own for the Epsom seat?

Hide holds Epsom thanks to John Key, and National needs Act’s current five seats. However, Act’s polling is now abysmal and, thanks to Hide’s non-leadership and Aucklanders’ dissatisfaction with rising Supercity costs, the party may be further punished at the polls.

But it’s no more than he deserves. Last weekend’s Act Party conference was a joke; lurching from the hysterical (“mine national parks”) to manic outbursts (“shoot the natives”). Hide continued using Key – the most popular prime minister in living memory – as a punching bag, yet he went into coalition with him to get the baubles, only to spend them taking his girlfriend overseas.

It’s like watching a newly married wife undermine her husband at a dinner party. You want to yell: “You married him. Stop bagging him in public.”

Has Hide learned nothing from the Christchurch conference, when he blurted to Act members that Key does nothing, and Act is left to do everything? How long will Key’s tolerance last?

Another incredible bail decision………..

“A prolific P cook has been charged with trying to make methamphetamine while free on bail soon after admitting serious drugs charges.

Christian Clifton, 48, was arrested and charged last week with possession of precursor materials and equipment and attempting to manufacture methamphetamine.

The new charges were laid just weeks after Judge Roy Wade granted Clifton bail after he pleaded guilty to a string of drugs charges on the eve of his trial.

The 10 manufacturing charges he admitted to each carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Clifton was the major target in Operation Royale, a covert investigation by Auckland drug squad detectives between July and August 2009.”

It must be very difficult for the Police to get on top of this problem when we have a Judiciary that can’t appreciate the gravity of it and don’t care to find out.

That isn’t the point. The theme of his party NZ First is “New Zealand for New Zealanders”.
NZ First is the only party with a strong position on immigration.

John Banks stated during his election campaign that “Auckland is likely to grow by the population of Wellington by 2026 when two million people will call Auckland their home” and this will create “great opportunities”. Great opportunities for whom? The membership of the Property Council or the general population. NZ’s population increased 21% between 1994 and 2004. Traffic increased 57%. The Savings Working Group tell us that
there was little evidence that immigration boosted local incomes. In fact, the need to build roads and schools meant that net migration contributed to the national deficit. and that it put house prices up. So it is a bone of contention which the Property Council will not want aired amongst the general public. National, Labour and the Greens* are all pro immigration.

*Anti-immigration feeling has no place in the Green party Immigration and Population policies released today, Green MP Keith Locke says.

David Farrar is making a lot of fuss over Winstons sign; I see it as a side show and the real story is why does national have so much money? taking immigration as an issue there is a lot of evidence that the general public are sold out to make the Property Council membership (even) wealthier (Home and Garden Magazine and all that). By delivering well healed customers who can pay a premium above locals they profit, while locals foot the bill for infrastructure.

t looks like the Government are set to loosen the immigration laws which will allow people to come into the country even if they cannot speak English – as long as they have plenty of cash.

The theory is that the influx of non-English speaking rich foreigners will be beneficial to the economy.

This theory however was completely demolished in April in a report from a Massy University economist, Dr Greg Clydesdale.

While Immigration Minister David Cunliffe thinks that more immigration is a ‘must for economic growth’, Clydesdale commented that ‘claims that immigrants improve the economy, introduce new techniques and grow the business sector are being exaggerated..There is often no economic evidence to support the claims made.’

Clydesdale pointed out that the Government’s own figures showed that only 2 percent of new immigrants introduced new technology.

He said that many new arrivals under the business, investment and entrepreneurial categories brought existing buSinesses such as restaurants, cafes and takeaways.’

‘There is little new activity. there’s no added value, it’s just a change of ownership,’ said Clydesdale.

Clydesdale went on to say that immigration policy was adding to the increase in house prices and putting further pressure on inflation rates.

But the Government’s to allow wealthy immmigrants into the country who can’t speak even basic English, clearly indicates that Clydesdale’s well-researched report has been filed in the rubbish bin.

In a statement to the Sunday Star-Times, [Minister] Coleman said: “Department of Labour research shows there is no strong link between immigration and house prices and migrants provide a net gain to the New Zealand economy of around $1.9 billion a year. Not sure if Graeme Edgeler is reading the general debate … but wondering if he’s the same guy that grew up 2 doors down from me on a street named after a native tree in a small North Island town? National coalition supported

A new opinion poll out today indicates that in the opinion of those surveyed the National Party-led coalition would stay in power if an election were held tomorrow.

The HorizonPoll shows a National-led coalition would secure 46.2 percent of the vote, while a Labour-Green-New Zealand First coalition would get 40.6 percent.

Support for National is up 2.6 percent since the Christchurch earthquake in February.

The Labour Party has 27 percent support, the Green Party 7.2 percent, and New Zealand First 6.4 percent.

The ACT Party has enjoyed a boost in support to 3.1 percent, up from a low of 1.6 percent in December.

The Maori Party continues to struggle at 1.1 percent.

The MP will be watching like a hawk how Hone’s ideas take off amongst their own base. Will it be a wildfire or a scrubfire? Whatever it is, it will be comprised entirely of Clark’s “wreckers and haters,” that we already know.

I also can’t believe Winston will ever get elected to a seat again and neither would Laws. So I’ve tentatively removed NZF from calculation pending denial or confirmation.

I suspect also the more people see of Goff the less they’ll like him, which is a shame for him because with Key it’s precisely the opposite case. This is a bit of handicap when you’re the Leader of the Opposition, isn’t it.

Generations of New Zealanders have grown up believing Moriori were an inferior, pre-Maori race driven from New Zealand to seek refuge in the Chatham Islands.
In his 1989 book Moriori: A People Rediscovered, the late historian Michael King said four generations of New Zealanders were taught to vilify Moriori.
“Nobody in New Zealand – and few elsewhere in the world – has been subjected to group slander as intense and as damaging as that heaped upon the Moriori,” he wrote.

“In the last five years there has been a shift in the strategies used by iwi in their quest for property rights and constitutional recognition. The shift is from a Treaty of Waitangi justification to a more comprehensive indigenous group rights argument. The group rights argument is used to claim customary rights, and in an extension, to claim that those customary rights are property rights guaranteed under English Common Law.

Professor Matthew Palmer has expressed this approach succinctly: ‘Most would say individual rights come first, but under our law, even if the treaty was extinguished, Maori rights do hold sway. Aboriginal title of customary rights exist in law separate from the Treaty – arising from a common law doctrine inherited from England and applied in Canada, United States and Australia. “It is a recognition by the English legal system that the people who were here first gained an interest in property by virtue of that fact’. (Palmer cited in Barton, 2004).

Today I will make a counter-argument in order to show that there are problems with the concept of historical continuity that underpins the iwi approach. This concept may seem of remote academic interest but I want to show today how its interpretation is crucial. If the iwi approach were to be successful, the consequences for New Zealand are serious. The property rights argument will privatise large public socio-economic assets into the hands of iwi corporations. This will create a permanent gap between a small iwi elite with aristocratic pretensions on the one hand and the majority of New Zealanders of all ethnicities on the other. The larger group rights argument for the inclusion of iwi into the nation’s constitutional arrangements[1] will undermine the integrity of the New Zealand nation.”

Close Moon will look large.

The moon visible from New Zealand tonight is the closest it has been to Earth in 18 years.

It will appear largest at moonrise, 7.12 this evening in Gisborne, 7.23 in Wellington, and 7.27 to 7.30 in Auckland, New Plymouth and Christchurch.

It will rise over Invercargill at 7.44.

Philip Duncan of WeatherWatch says the best time for the clearest closeup is when the moon is higher in the sky, looking through less of the Earth’s dirty atmosphere.

It will become whiter as it gets higher.

Mr Duncan says it’s a full moon, and thick cloud in the upper North Island will make it appear eerier.

The moon will be in the sky for about 12 hours, and will be setting tomorrow morning in the west.

I hoped you might have an answer. I have read that the NZ First policy of “buying back the forests” didn’t even arise in the coalition talks with National in 1996. Did the NZ First policy of “cutting immigration to the bone” appear in his discussions with Labour in 2005? Why would anyone bother campaigning on policies they are incapable of delivering?

Winnie wasn’t ‘incapable of delivering’ on the policies – he just got ‘distracted’ by the baubles of office and power and then suffered ‘selective amnesia’ when asked about them, Basically, he ‘forgot’ because it suited him to do so – gold chains, cabinet positions, racehorses, power, glory and the distinct possibility that he wouldn’t get caught if he was ‘somewhat selective’ with the truth’ is so very much more exciting than actually holding to stated political policies and doing what one says onw e intends to do. Selective Ethics dear boy, selective ethics!! And if his constituents should ask when teh policies were to be presented in parliament? Not a problem – Winston was (is?) after all a lawyer and as such was / is well practiced in the use of obscurification and obstruction (apologies to any Lawyers who may feel insulted).

Incapable of delivering? No, just incapable of ‘keeping promises’. As I said, ‘Selective Ethics.

And the wonder of it all is that large numbers of his former constiuents still believe in him!!

A 4.3 quake in the same area followed at 1.33, then another at 1.34.

GNS principal scientist Kelvin Berryman said the quakes were on the Ostler fault, a fault line that hadn’t shown anything major for 3000 years.

“The 4.6 would have triggered the other two, that does happen from time to time,” he said.

“Normally these things wouldn’t get very much attention, but everyone is very sensitised to earthquakes at the moment.

Ring’s prediction for a quake to hit just before noon today did not happen.

The Twizel quakes, and a 4.7 magnitude quake, 210km deep at 9.34pm last night in Hawera were unrelated to the Christchurch activity, Berryman said.

The scientist said March 20 in Christchurch was on course for a “standard day”, with aftershocks remaining well-behaved and getting less frequent and less intense.

“There still remains a possibility (around a five per cent chance) magnitude 5 or larger earthquake could occur in the Canterbury area today, so be prepared,” he said.

Scientists would be showing solidarity by continuing with their normal work, as would engineers and others involved in the clean-up.

Ring made his prediction

He wrote “the morning of 20 March 2011 sees the South Island again in a big earthquake risk”.

So the fault hadn’t moved for 3000 years and does on the very day Ring said there could be activity.Not as large as maybe assumed but still movement in a fault that hasn’t moved for a long time.

Meng-Yee did not respond to Sunday Star-Times inquiries but in 2009 she spoke to Metro about her work. The article said when Meng-Yee arrived at the newspaper she claimed her aim was to “lower the bar”.

I would say she has achieved that, and then some.

Interesting. They worked all that out in three weeks. A bit like there’s Global Warming cause of the hockey stick says so.

No one knows the truth and scientist are suppossed to work to determine the truth, not a self styled outcome as in the case of the Global Warming agenda.

on September 7 – days after the first big earthquake – Ring made his first online seismic predictions on his predictweather.com website.

He wrote “the morning of 20 March 2011 sees the South Island again in a big earthquake risk”.

Note he didn’t say CHCH. which is what has been widely reported and repeated. Even by NZ’s most famous graduate of geological science in the form of the Global Warmist Nick Smith.

Since early February, the Sun, Mercury and Venus have been closely aligned. Nothing unusual about that. Venus and Mercury are inner planets. Neptune, an outer planet, is also within this configuration.

This configuration is now joined by Uranus and Jupiter, so six planets and the Sun are quite closely aligned.

The Moon is now in opposition and will be conjunct the Sun at the time of the New Moon. Add to this mix that the Moon is now 14% closer to the Earth than normal, leading to higher than normal tides, and you could argue that there might be something behind the recent earthquakes at Christchurch and off the coast of Japan.

Typically, it is never one thing that causes breakdowns, but a series of events or conditions that, on their own, would not cause a breakdown, but conjoined, have critical impact. Also, typically, the breakdown occurs where the is weakest.
This is as true for human health as it is for planetary health.

It is a natural human tendency to want to blame one thing, or an individual. It is also a human tendency to look for a “magic bullet” to solve a problem, but life does not seem to always work that way.

Advice – Don’t shoot the messenger.

And just now checking the geonet site (for the first time since Friday) and feeling an earthquake as soon as I walk in the door, I have to say it is very flippin interesting!

I was actually kinda hoping Ring would be wrong, but unfortunately he appears to have hit it lucky again.
The last couple of days appear to have been much more seismically active right across the country.
The plot thickens!!

You mean there’s still no point looking seriously at it since there’s absolutely no possibility he’s right, it was just coincidental?

Given our current level of very poor critically poor in fact understanding in this area I would have thought it makes sense to pursue not disregard potential avenues like this. What is there to lose even if it is a dead-end? You don’t have to bet the farm on it, FFS. Just take it seriously as a possibility.

I agree with you reid, I think this really throws a spanner in the works. It is already proven that the Moon does have some effect, and the events today could be dramatic evidence of this.
It is really interesting, especially with earthquakes in different parts of the country as well.

personally I would be questioning the scientific basis by which so-called scientists can claim that the moon DOESN’T have anything to do with earthquakes.

Consider this.

The moon controls the tides. No-one disputes that. Tides vary about 5m in height from low to high. Water weighs 1 tonne per cu mtr. So over 1km sq, between low and high tide, there’s 5 million tonnes of water moved by the moon. Multiply that out by the surface area of the oceans. That’s an enormous amount / mass of water moving around.

The earth is not uniform density, nor is it inflexible. The tectonic plates are floating around. So, why wouldn’t the moon pull on the crust as well? It does according to Newton. Gravity doesn’t discriminate.

Newton gave us his law of attraction of mass. It varies as 1/distance squared, so the closer things get to each other, the force goes up by a square. Half the distance, 4 times the force.

So, we have this moon thing locked into orbit with us, and we’re saying it has no effect on anything except the water?

yeah right. It pulls everything, water, air, and the flexible crust as well – everything.

So logically therefore, the time at which the highest chances of an earthquake releasing stored energy is when it’s under the most stress. That’s when the moon is closest. That’s all Ken Ring is saying.

I’m waiting for someone to give a reason why the moon CAN’T have an effect.

The maximum daily aftershock energy release since the 6.3 on feb 22 was……wait for it……the 20th of March.
Every perigee for the past 4 months appears to have coincided with the monthly maximum daily energy release of aftershocks.

We are beginning to see a trend here.
