Can anybody explain why the media (including TVNZ, TV3, National Radio) consistently refer to the 18 year old involved in the Darren Hughes sex scandal as an “18 year old man” – while the 19 year old shot by police yesterday is still a “teenager”?

I watched the president of the PPTA on the TV 3 this morning. He was commenting on the issue of bullying and in particular the letter that the government had written to boards of trustees reminding them of their obligation to maintain a safe environment.
He started by making the snide comment that he was sure that bullies were quivering in their boots at the prospect that boards were receiving letters from the government. I am not sure whether he actually used the phrase “wet bus ticket” but certainly it was used in subsequent comment. Later he acknowledged that the letter was a start which made his sarcasm totally unnecessary.
John Key was interviewed not long afterwards. He said what we all know (including the president of PPTA) that the letter is the start of an initiative. Key retained his dignity throughout. He resisted the temptation to invite the president of PPTA to stop scoring cheap political points and offer to work together with the government on an issue that is totally unrelated to the political divide.
Key came across with dignity. The president of PPTA looked momentarily like a sanctimonious pratt.

There are two possible purposes for making snide, sarcastic and derisory comments. One is to hurt, humiliate or otherwise demean the subject of the comments. The other is to elevate the self-esteem of the maker of those statements. Perhaps Mr Duff can reflect on this question: Apart from where they sit on the continuum of severity, what is the difference in principle between his comments and text bullying? I am sure Mr Duff felt much better for his comment. He gave the government a sneaky poke in the nose and he probably felt very clever for having done so. That is what bullying is all about. Kids actually see that sort of comment and thinks that if it is OK for adults then it is ok for them. Some people do not have the wit or intelligence to engage in verbal put-downs. They resort to violence. Up yours Mr Duff.

“A police officer is on trial after allegedly bashing five prisoners, one of whom had to have a testicle removed.

Martin James Folan, a police sergeant in West Auckland, faces six charges of assault and one of injuring with intent to injure.

He pleaded not guilty in the Auckland District Court yesterday.

Crown prosecutor Mark Zarifeh said the incident that led to the prisoner losing a testicle took place on January 8 last year.

Folan faces a charge of injuring with intent to injure and an alternative charge of assaulting with intent to injure in relation to Joseph McGee.

Mr Zarifeh said Mr McGee was drinking at a West Auckland bar when he got into a fight. An ambulance and the police were called.

Mr Zarifeh said police officers had to restrain Mr McGee while ambulance staff checked him for injuries. He was arrested for disorderly behaviour and taken to the Henderson police station.

Three police officers were helping to process Mr McGee when Folan kneed him “with a good deal of force”.

Well done that Policeman. You have my full support. What a shame 2 testicals were not removed..then the slime wouldnt be
able to breed more slime.

@rodders-it doesn’t really answer the question though.

It seems to allow for filing extensions, but, does not seem to make an allowance for cases where records are completely destroyed.

I’ve wondered about that before -what does the IRD do when business records are permanently destroyed? Retrieving bank statements should be OK, so you can probably know your income. But, you’d never be able to prove your expenses.

@wreck1080 – My understanding is that they might use filed GST returns as a guide. Not as good for people who only file 6 monthly GST returns, though (presuming the last return they filed was in October).

wreck1080 – This also shows the importance of meeting tax obligations in a timely manner. A person or business that suffers a disaster would be far more likely to be symphatetically treated by IRD if they habitually met tax obligations than someone who continually played ‘silly’ with IRD. No doubt if anyone tries to deliberately take advantage of the situation to avoid or defer taxes, IRD would show little sympathy – that is on the same level of looting.

The media read press releases and scripts, in this case, one from the Police, one from the Office of the LoOP. When they aren’t doing that, they’re reading their own opinions. You can identify their opinions because they often contain technical adverbs like “crap” and “gutted”.

The twits who are directors of Genesis Energy should this morning all tender their resignations to their effective employer, the government. This stupid carry on with extortionate spot market pricing at the weekend. They did it because they could. But just because they could — does not mean they should.
Knowing the difference is what they are employed for – and they have failed that one. If their judgement fails to conclude resignation is neccessary then the chop is required.
The left want state run enterprises because supposedly they are not exploitive. These twerps give the lie to that one.

Why I am not a liberal — reason number 2373 —

A few years ago the Mayor of Kapiti Jenny Rowan pushed for nudity to be allowed on Kapiti beaches. This went through as a bylaw. Another crazy liberal idea, but everything would be okay because nudists would be discreet and there would be no problems.

Many in the local community didn’t want this bylaw. But it was pushed through by the Mayor, who not coincidentally is an open lesbian, against community opposition.

Today we see the headline — “police take hard line on sex in sand”.
Apparently people are now engaging in sexual intercourse on the beach. Particularly gay men are using the sand dunes as an open brothel.

Isn’t this modern liberalism? Just an open licence to fornicate and indulge ourselves? It is also what happens when we elect people of poor character to public office. It seems that the children cannot go to the beach because their parents won’t let them. The parents are afraid that they will see people engaging in indecent sexual acts on the beach.

Who else finds this appalling?

cg – I think far too many people think that bashing someone they don’t like is a reasonable action to take. Do you disagree with that?

I doubt that starboard would be so happy with giving the police the liberty to dish out to anyone they took a dislike to if they picked him up sometime. It’s important in a decent society that the police stick to prevention and apprehension, and leave justice to the prescribed justice system we have.

Can we please have another thread about how completely SAFE nuclear power is?

Now that we have Plutonium found in the soil outside the plant, Caesium in the sea around the plant, and high level suspicions that the core of reactor No 3 is melting through the steel containment vessel, I think it’s really time to put out the message about safety again.

TEPCO is doing a terriffic job with it’s current statement that Plutonium “is not harmful to humans”, but more is needed. Perhaps some of the commenters here can detail their own positive experiences of eating Plutonium and Caesium, and the beneficial effect it’s had on their lives.

Nuclear power is 110% completely SAFE, and anyone who says different is an obvious commo nut-bag who ought be executed.

What is the title of the wife of the mayor? as in is it correct to say as they have at Stuff.co.nz “Mayoress cleared of cancer” ? If this is correct was Kerry Prendergast’s husband the Mayor of Wellington?

Or is this just one more instance of the butcher of the English Language at the hands of the ignorant?

Opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is being urged to abandon plans to sing in Israel by New Zealand supporters of the Palestinian cause. Global Peace and Justice Auckland (GPJA) says it has written asking her to withdraw from her scheduled performance at the Israel Festival in late May.

GPJA spokesman John Minto said Dame Kiri should show support for an international campaign to boycott Israeli events in protest at the Israeli government’s policies towards the Palestinians.

NZ Herald: BNZ economists are anticipating a “massive” rise in housing construction, as the rebuilding of Christchurch gets under way, and as leaky building problems add to demand.

Considering the building industry was catering for 24-25000 new dwellings in 2008 I’d hardly see this as a “massive” rise.

EU to ban cars from cities by 2050

The European Commission on Monday unveiled a “single European transport area” aimed at enforcing “a profound shift in transport patterns for passengers” by 2050.

The plan also envisages an end to cheap holiday flights from Britain to southern Europe with a target that over 50 per cent of all journeys above 186 miles should be by rail.

Top of the EU’s list to cut climate change emissions is a target of “zero” for the number of petrol and diesel-driven cars and lorries in the EU’s future cities.

Siim Kallas, the EU transport commission, insisted that Brussels directives and new taxation of fuel would be used to force people out of their cars and onto “alternative” means of transport.

“That means no more conventionally fuelled cars in our city centres,” he said. “Action will follow, legislation, real action to change behaviour.”

Any support to thuggery cannot be a good thing for society. One reason why the bash is so prevalent and widespread is because it’s made light of, joked about and encouraged – and like you are doing, downplayed.

Apropos the cricket – if Wright has a policy of preserving wickets till the 30th over or so, why do we persevere with a batsman who persistently goes out to a wild head in the air wog to a good delivery? Given that this happens incessantly and is the most common complaint about all our top order batsmen, is it not time to say “that’s your lot, mate. We will have another look at you when you’ve learnt to bat all day.” I hope Ryder can show the same maturity that he did against SA and that Guptil doesn’t run out of oxygen in the forties.

Ah well, sort of inevitably out of the World Cup. Ironic that Sri Lanka’s perceived weakness, their middle order, pulled them through, while our supposed strengths, our batting depth and our fielding, weren’t quite up to it. At least it wasn’t a walloping, and good on Sri Lanka who deserved the win.

Fury at equality watchdog after it calls for teachers to ask 11-year-olds if they are gay

Children as young as 11 could soon be asked about their sexuality without their parents’ consent, it has emerged.
Teachers, nurses and youth workers are being urged to set up pilot studies aimed at monitoring adolescent sexual orientation for the first time.

A report commissioned by the Government’s equalities watchdog found that it was ‘practically and ethically’ possible to interview young children about their sexuality.
