A spending increase I approve of

NZPA report:
An allowance for veterans with gallantry decorations has been increased nearly threefold, from $10.49 to $30 a week.
The allowance is paid to just over 100 veterans who receive a war disablement pension and have a gallantry decoration, such as the Victoria Cross or the Military Medal.
The increase takes effect from June 9.
There are not many 200% increases I would approve of.

Who could disapprove of publicity stunts like this?

Jesus an increase from an overgenerous $10.49 to a totally outrageous $30.
What will these people who almost gave their lives want next?
A living in dignity pension or even super that matches their leaders generous fund?
Shame on them.
Our wonderful Pollies are far too benevolent I say.

My Dad is 87 years old and gets this. He won the MM in Italy in 1945.

Almost hate to ask, what was the 49c for?

A small piece of shiny metal with a pin would be great for the forgotton White Mouse who sits in a resting home well into her 90′s justing hoping for NZ to do the same as the Aussies and France.
The increase should be backdated at least 20 years to these hero’s and I bet no one apart from the looney left would complain

$30/week is still fuck all. Especially when you consider that you don’t have to have done anything for your country to get the unemployment benefit, which is six times more than that (assuming it hasn’t gone up).

The looney left, blue coast?
Real socialists like myself would give guys with gallantry medals free houses, land, and a lifetime pension.
It’s filthy individualist rightists who piss on glory.

I can already see and hear the sneers and behind back remarks.
As the arrogant recipients of this largese, throw money around with gay abandon at the local RSA..

Blue Coast – My dad never received his honorarium that came with his gallantry award until the mid 2000s. He got a backdated payment from when he was gazetted in 1945 until that point, adjusted for various increases over time etc. It was a tidy sum. He was probably the highest paid war pensioner in the country that year
