Among others, the “Coalition for Social Justice” (hello Penny) are planning to take action. Spokesman Meredydd Barrar said “we might have to flour-bomb Eden Park again … when people get angry, all sorts of things can happen.” And (surprise, surprise) Titewhai also intends to target it.

Well, Meredydd is right. When people get angry, all sorts of things can happen. And I suspect that the average Kiwi will get very angry, very quickly, at those protestors who think that their “rights” to protest and disrupt the RWC take precedence and priority over other people’s rights to watch a game of rugby without being harassed.

I think a few of those flour-bombs might be getting lobbed right back at John Minto, Sue Bradford, et al.

It has the potential to discern important predictive relationships from complex natural systems. The first muttonbirder’s diary to be statistically analysed revealed a strong correlation between annual harvest fluctuations and the Southern Oscillation Index (Lyver et al. in press.). Sophisticated statistical methods were able to identify a subtle, but ecologically very important variable influencing titi population dynamics. If a harvest is less than in the previous year, an El Nino weather pattern is predicted for the following 12 months. When a harvest increases compared with the previous year, a La Nina weather phenomenon is predicted. These lagged effects had not been noticed by the birders, and yet they point to a fundamentally important potential mechanism (climate fluctuation) for the decline in harvests and bird numbers observed in the last 10 years (Figure 1).”

From time to time we have the debate about capital punishment – more recently in a summary sense with bin Laden. I struggle with the concept of execution as a matter of principle. I have previously recognised that there is a point on a continuum between “unacceptable” and “justified– even summarily” where we seriously have to consider that capital punishment is an appropriate outcome. Where that point exists will be debated for ever and a day. On the assumption that Mladic is responsible for the massacres attributed to him, a fact to be proved in court, I think he can be indisputably placed at the “justified” end of the continuum.

This is why people like John Key are so cunning – he knows that the mum and dad voters are idiots and acts accordingly to appease their stupidity. At the end of the day it’s the votes that count. an article in the herald today about possible civil disobedience during the RWC. maybe even flour bombing.

i missed the springbok tour in the early 80’s, but ill be at a couple of the RWC games. I’m up for some hippy bashing 🙂

the same article mentioned hotel cleaners demanding 10% of the room rate? i did skim the article but that would equate to $15 – $40 per room cleaned? lol 10% of the room rate with no capital outlay! sweet

Two well-known beaches will be subject to Maori claims for customary title – under the Government’s new foreshore and seabed law. One of them is in the Far North at Shipwreck Bay, the other is Kennedy Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula. Shipwreck Bay is one of New Zealand’s best surfing spots.

It has also been the scene of a long-running access dispute between a commercial tourism operator and the local Maori.
Now the iwi – Te Rarawa – is one of the first to formally seek customary title under the government’s new Marine and Coastal Area Bill.

“Of course there is customary title out there and I believe that some iwi will be able to achieve the tests,” says Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson.

One other thing: I’ll take this opportunity to revise my Kiwiblog alias slightly. Phillip John/Roger Nome has long since been kicked off Kiwiblog. My Nomestradamus alias was a bit of a piss-take on his one.

We live in troubled times.

The world nearly came to an end on ~~21 May 1988~~ ~~7 September 1994~~. We owe a lifetime debt of gratitude to Harold Camping for helping us to avert those potentially catastrophic events. We nearly perished on 21 May 2011, but thankfully an extreme interplanetary alignment bought us time, though only until 21 October 2011.

Given that we live in troubled times, I think it’s now time for me to become Nostradamus.

So under the official information act, 3 News asked the Government which iwi had lodged claims for customary title.
Te Rarawa has told Mr Finlayson it will seek title for this area. On the East Coast Ngati Pahauwera has also claimed the beaches north of Napier and south of Wairoa.

Customary title will significantly empower those Maori who meet the test. They could charge commercial operators, veto developments and ban access under customary practices like rahui – that’s when Maori close the beach.

Finlayson concedes his law empowers Maori. “It does give Maori more rights than they had under the previous legislation,” he says.

The Government has also told 3 News, three other iwi are expected to lodge claims. Ngati Porou on the East Coast, Ngati Porou Ki Hauraki wants customary title over Kennedy Bay and Mataroa Bay on the Coromandel.

Yup – despite the spanking the blog blight will receive courtesy of the Howick Ward voters, there will no doubt be fantasy claims that all is well and that her view on life is the right one and the rest of the population has got it wrong.

At least the cats, dogs and sparrows in Howick will no longer be sent scurrying for safety when they are confronted with PBs signs. In fact, with the hoardings removed, we will no longer be exposed to the visual pollution of her visage staring at us from fences in a manner more akin to a starving vulture staring down at a morsel of food in the distance. Kids of Howick will again be able to walk the streets and Mums and Dads can stroll to and from the shops without having to check whether Halloween has come early.

Good times are coming… results soon.

Self organized critically (SOC) from physics (non-equilibrium dynamics), which is mentioned in the article I linked to in my previous comment (failure of academic economics) at the top is a universal phenomena (including social dynamics) as being observed by researchers from different disciplines (even economics & brain consciousness).

It was Hyek who first promoted this concept of self organized system in economics.

The OBL fiasco from Abbottabad; Parliament’s collective voice to reconsider relation with US; No breather from drones; Eve of Strategic terrorism in the back drop PNS Mehran catastrophe; Indian betrayal to Russia in form of cancellation of jets deal has forced Pakistan and Russia to start building up the relations in their best interest.

I hope those interested in geopolitics have been closely following the downward developments in US-Pak relations. China warned the other day, that an attack on Pak would be considered an attack on China. Of course, the US media completely ignores this, but that’s what has been reported elsewhere. And behind China also stands Russia.

Who knows where it will end up, but if you’re interested you should be looking at it very closely at the mo.

On March 2011 – I got 128 votes – less than 3 months later, ten times more people (1491) voted for a clear ‘anti-$upercity’, anti-rate$ increase / ‘cut out the contractors’ message?

Wonder how many votes I’d get if I stood on a similar platform (also opposing asset sales) in the Epsom electorate?

(Compared with the 128 votes I got less than three months ago in the Botany by-election? 😉

hmmm………..

I think Penny you’d have such a good chance at winning Epsom, that you should definitely throw your entire Waterpressure operating budget at the campaign. Put everything you have into it, even if it means you can’t do anything at all for the next 3 years. I think the risk is definitely worth taking, your policy platform is music to the Epsom voters, I used to live there myself and I love every bit of it.

$upercity – super ripoff – that sort of thing?

In actual fact there were a lot of people from the Epsom electorate who did not like Metrowater one little bit.

And – it would always be fun to Hold John Bank’s ‘feet to the fire’ (again) over broken promises, empty ‘one-liners’ etc….

It is beyond me why the USA continues to back Pakistan. They are merely throwing good money & resources after bad. IMHO the best potential political ally would be a strengthened India as they have demonstrated cohesion & will develop into a vital part of the world economy unencumbered by the handbrake that is the Islamic religion.

For certain there is a new world order in the offing & I fail to see any Islamic country participating other than as a breeding ground for disaffected terrorists.

My pick would be a bloc comprising of a weakened USA, a similar EEC, Russia & India vs China & a grouping of Middle eastern & African countries.

I congratulate Penny on her outstanding result – 5% of the vote – wow!

Seeing as Penny has now finetuned her local election campaign strategy, she should take things further and run a national election campaign. The ACT Party would undoubtedly benefit from her expertise. Penny has repeatedly expressed an interest in Epsom issues, so there’s a nice fit there.

She should give Don Brash a call and offer her services to the ACT Party.

I have to add my support to Water Woman’s intention to stand for Epsom in the coming elections. Fresh from the ringing endorsement of her candidacy in Howick, missing the target by an insignificant 10.000 votes, she will be welcomed by the Epsom electorate.

John Banks should be afraid…..very afraid.

A different sort of campaign:

Give prisoners healthier food
Dean Wickliffe has written to Corrections boss Ray Smith seeking a greater variety of more affordable and healthy food for purchase in prisons.

Prisoners can spend up to $70 a week on food and toiletry items from a nationally-managed list which includes 13 items of confectionary but only three items of fruit.

Wickliffe, a connoisseur of prison food, having spent almost 36 years behind bars, wants more varieties of fruit and vegetables, and a selection of healthier cereals and biscuits added.

He said prisoners relied on ”the prison canteen” because provided meals were often too small or inedible.

”Sometimes you just can’t eat the dinner … they give out … it gets that bad,” Wickliffe said from his home in the Bay of Plenty settlement of Maketu.

He said the canteen food was ”high-salt, high-fat, high-sugar rubbish” and ”action needs to be taken now”.

”It is obvious that no regard was given to the nutritional value of the items we were allowed to buy … the very worst type of foods which [affect] the health of prisoners over time, especially long-term inmates and which encourage unhealthy eating practises that result in obesity,” Wickliffe wrote.

You’re right Penny, the ratio is 0.05. I had forgotten to mutiply that by 100 and we lost our network before I could edit it, but making 1491 into 149100 would have yeilded you an epic win 🙂

nasska, the US forces in Afghanistan depend largely on a thousand mile supply line through Pakistan, which gets cut off if it interferes too much. In addition to this, you have China and Russia doing what they are doing. This is really dangerous, and taking a USA, USA attitude toward it, is I’m afraid not going to yield a whole lot of accurate data.

Anyone who wants to understand US-Pak needs to know what Raymond Davis was doing – he’s the US special forces guy who shot those two ISI agents in Lahore.

Then with that perspective, look at how the US carried out the UBL raid.

Then look at what China and Russia are saying.

IF this report is true, then what China said is, don’t activate the JSOC plan to capture Pakistan’s nukes. This is what it’s referring to when it says Pak’s sovereignty must be respected.

There is no doubt that the USA are pushing Pakistan to the limit with the Davis incident & the ‘invasion’ in order to take out bin Laden. Two points:

1) I think that the USA are increasingly seeing Pakistan as being totally flaky. The latter’s administration is hostage to tribal type politics & there are vast gulfs between the prosperous lowlands & the backward highland tribes. The highland tribes identify more with the Afghanis. It’s possibly worth remembering that the sub-continent was divided on Islam/Hindu boundaries in the 1940’s. Few Islamic countries have successfully adopted Western style democracy & it seems that Pakistan is no exception.

Additionally I feel that the USA looks upon its huge aid investment as buying the right to violate Pakistan’s sovereignty.

2) I’m inclined to look upon China’s backing of Pakistan as a flexing of its international muscle rather tham a serious attempt to dominate the world’s stage….at present. My gut feeling is that China would be wary of snuggling up too close to the fractured, backward looking Islamic states. What they would understand & be prepared to capitalise on is the loss of face the USA has caused Pakistan as a result of the recent incidents.

Personally I don’t see the USA as long term participants in the region. As their economic situation worsens they will have to pull back & could well retreat to their pre WW1 isolationism.

We live in interesting times.

Memo to Planet Pluto: Getting around 5% of the vote is more than a little on the short side of getting elected. And it doesn’t matter what spin you try and put on the results – it still means that around 95% of the electorate voted for someone else! That is truly a spanking of epic proportions! Gone burgers! Stuffed! Hammered! Smashed! Squashed! Unwanted! And pwned!

So, pack up your bongos and depart Howick so you can spout your conspiracy theories somewhere else. I hear that Hone is looking for a sucker to stand in Tamaki and I really think you’d be a good fit – on the one hand a nasty, racist piece of work who safely matches the description ‘victim of the grip’ and alongside him on the hustings an idiot looking for her village.

It’s interesting, isn’t it, how the measurements of success change depending on the viewpoint. We have been blasted for months about the Botany by-election and have have the voting statistics thrust down our throats as proof of the opposition to assets sales. Come Howick, however voting has nothing to do with the measure of success. It’s all about the number of people who saw some signs [despite the fact that the voting public appeared not to take a blind bit of notice]. What is it you call people who persistantly move the goalposts to ensure that they are seen in the best light or others are seen in the worst light — other than paradigm contortionists?

In my view, all the issues I campaign on are real and matter to people.

It just seems to be that a number of ‘Kiwibloggers’ don’t agree that these issues are ‘real’ or matter to them /you?

errr…………….. given that I had no paid advertising in the Howick by-election – how would you ‘Nookin’ explain the over tenfold increase in the vote I received compared with less than three months ago?

From 128 to 1491 votes?

Actually, ‘Nookin’ it appears that there are members of the ‘voting public’ who are actually ‘Kiwibloggers’ who have taken enough ‘notice’ of some of my signs to make comments about them?’

Perhaps you simply missed those posts?

“Fair play”, Penny, means that everyone is judged by the same standard. As I have just pointed out, you do not subscribe to the same theory. If you read my posts on your proclamations, you will see that most of them deal with just this issue. It is because I have an understanding of “fair play” that I post. You will also note that apart from a few throwaway comments, virtually all of my posts involve a reasoned analysis of the point that I am making.

And I have to concede she could be right – if you’ve set the bar so low that ‘only’ a 95% rejection rate courtesy of the Howick Ward is her measurement of success, then so be it.
