Speaking of which. Why do our armed forces make such a fuss over scantily clad darkies doing the spear dance at every opportunity?

I’m sure Willie never did a haka before he blew the scumbags away.

Call me a silly old prat but I thought the measure of a soldier was once defined as “The ability to fire three rounds per minute”.

Upping the fire power to today’s standards would be a debatable business what with nuclear weapons but I have always thought that the best one man can do is a double tap with one of them in the head.

I’ve never been able to follow the etiquette around the haka. Are the opposing forces advised in advance that there will be a break of a couple of minutes while the Maori shed their clobber & jump up & down.

Must prolong battles unnecessarily.

There is a difference between indecency and offensiveness. Lots of things offend me: rudeness, parents swearing at kids, drivers who don’t indicate, people who make their dogs vegan.

NZ Flag burning on ANZAC Day is pretty tasteless. I remember that flag on my grandmother’s coffin. And the person who does this deserves our disgust and ostracism. But we can’t make it illegal. It’s just the price of being in a free country.

I would rather witness flag burning daily than live in a country where we couldn’t draw Mohammed with a bomb for a turban, couldn’t insult the prime minister, or couldn’t view a photo of Jesus submerged in urine. Just don’t give the bitch who did this on ANZAC Day any more attention.

Conservatives, I mean the real kind, not people like DPF, are opposed to ALL forms of liberalism, liberalism meaning of course all forms of secular, democratic egalitarianism. Both libertarianism, including the soft variety proposed by DPF, and Marxism are forms of liberalism in that sense.

So in fact Libertarianism and Marxism are simply two sides of the same coin.

Flag burning should be a crime, and it should always result in a prison sentence.

Liberalism, in ALL of its forms, both right and left, is the cancer of the West.

No, jonnobanks, flag-burning is a civil order thing which has different criteria by which it is assessed. I can’t see that property rights come into flag burning at all, apart from the obvious fact you must legally possess that flag in the first place.

What I think we should do, is allocate special flag burning areas dotted around the country-side. They would be way the hell away from anywhere but on allocated days which don’t include days such as Anzac and Waitangi days, anyone at all could drive for simply hours, stand around in the special area and burn as many flags as they wanted, with nobody around to see them.

If I were the govt, this is how I’d comply with this decision, were I Chris Finlayson, that is.

So now the New Zealand flag can now be burnt “any time, anywhere” without fear of arrest because the Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that offensive behaviour must give rise to a “disturbance of public order”.
Instead of common sense having anything to do with it, the matter will now depend on the reaction to an action not yet taken.
You have to have a second offence before the first offence is deemed an offence.
That’s going bring the crime rate down.

The best lawyer story of all time…

The Salvation Army realised that it had never received a donation from the city’s most successful lawyer. So a Salvation Army volunteer made an appointment to see the lawyer in his lavish office.

Embarrassed, the Salvation Army volunteer mumbled, “Uh… No, I didn’t know that.”

“Secondly,” says the lawyer, “did it show that my brother, a disabled Veteran, is blind, confined to a wheelchair and is unable to support his wife and six children?”

The stricken volunteer began to stammer an apology, but was cut off again.

“Thirdly, “the lawyer said, “did your research also show you that my sister’s husband died in a dreadful car accident, leaving her penniless with a mortgage and the burden of supporting three children, one of whom is disabled and another who has learning disabilities requiring an array of private tutors?”

Some Maori decide to start a chicken farm. They get

“What!” shouted a voice from the back. “Every bloody Thursday?”

Yes there are, there is the responsibility to behave in a way that does not impinge on the rights of others.
There are also moral responsibilities that any community of people need to respect in order to maintain real freedom, this is where the extreme left struggle so frequently.

Well that’s just recognition that everyone has the same rights as you, but it’s not a responsibility in the sense of duty or obligation, which is the issue.

If taken as an absolute, I can see Wat’s line of thinking. You are you & you have no obligation (responsibility) to your neighbour. Two immediate practical problems:

1) Your rights are only as good as your neighbour allows them to be. The law of the jungle would prevail.
2) Society couldn’t exist without the interaction of rights & responsibilities. No society = no progress, no trade, no monetary system ………

You would be reduced to living as a solitary caveman…but without responsibilities I’ll agree.

Super rises 19% under National, PM tells Greypower
by Rt Hon John Key, Prime Minister07 May 2011
In a speech to Greypower today, Prime Minister John Key told the audience at their AGM in Hamilton that the National Government has delivered to superannuitants and will continue to do so.

Mr Key says: “Over the past three years, NZ Superannuation has risen $166 a fortnight for a married couple since September 2008. This is a 19% increase in nominal terms or an 8.5% increase after allowing for inflation.”

This is a significant increase, and is due to a number of different factors – a series of tax cuts; annual inflation increases; a special payment to compensate for the increase in GST; and the fact that after-tax wages have been rising faster than inflation, thereby triggering the 66 per cent wage floor.

By comparison, under the previous Government it took a whole 9 years for the married couple rate to rise 8.5% above inflation.

Mr Key also told Greypower that the National Government was spending more than ever before on health and last year delivered 12,000 more operations for over-65’s than the previous year.

“We have 1,000 more nurses and 500 more doctors now working in our public health sector, and we have also delivered more prescription medicines, shorter waits for cancer patients, and shorter waits in emergency departments,” says Mr Key.

“In law and order, we have passed a three-strikes law to keep the worst offenders in prison, strengthened laws against gangs, and launched an assault against the drug ‘P’. We have also increased police numbers and put in new programmes for youth offenders.

“I have given my word that the married rate of Super will remain at 66% of real after-tax wages”, says Mr Key.

“And I have constantly reaffirmed, and do so again today, that as long as I am Prime Minister, the age of eligibility for Superannuation will not change and all New Zealanders aged 65 and over will be eligible.”

Its a bit more basic than the question of what I think you are really saying is the existence or otherwise of social responsibility. The fundamental issue is whether YOUR rights should always be subservient to MY rights. I say that MY rights to do whatever I want should not impinge upon YOUR right to not be affected by the consequences of me exercising my rights. This is a hard line to draw; more so given that we live in the age of faux outrage. Maybe the line is drawn around notions of respect or empathy for others. The burning of a flag per se is a bit of a red herring in this context; its the consequences of that act that are the real issue.

If I want to make a dick of myself by buring a flag in the middle of Queen St (by-laws permitting) then good luck to me. I would would simply expect passers by to think: “what a dickhead – what’s that about”? But in the context of a dawn parade, and irrespective of how many of us would genuinely be offended by that same act, I think it is reasonable to acknowledge that of those attending for reasons unrelated to pyromania or just making dicks of themselves, there may well be some who would be genuinely upset and thereby have THEIR rights of rememberance and tribute interfered with. If grilling a pork chop could reasonably have the same effect then that also would be out of order. Ditto burning bibles, korans, or wandering up to have a dump on the cenotaph.
