That’s a beautiful bird and a terrific picture – thanks. This is my favourite bird time of the year as the tuis are busy every morning in the camelia next to my window.

I can smell the coffee from here, C. Oh, the aroma. Have to express my own today – home all day in the garden.
Looking forward to be joined by the white-eyes, or wax-eyes as we know them. Fascinating shot – the wee bird looks in ‘heaven’.

They’re also known as silver-eyes. Common names can be problematic :)

The Maori name actually means stranger, as all our birds originate with some that flew/blew over from NSW (naturally) in the 1800s. Fwiw, scientific name is Zosterops lateralis. They’re very appreciative of food this time of the year.

I have a feeling that Zosterops lateralis already synthesises its own Vitamin C – I think that the pathway is still functional in the Sylvoidea

Ha ha, yeah. They don’t need it in their diet.

    - thanks, it was actually quite low light and I had to use the tripod to get the shot in.
