One in eight New Zealanders is still considering quitting the country long term, despite National successfully campaigning on a promise to reverse the “brain drain”.

And a new poll shows a fifth of 18 to 30-year-olds are threatening to leave in search of a better life overseas.

In the last two general elections National campaigned on its ability to keep Kiwis here. Its billboards read “wave goodbye to higher taxes not your loved ones” and promised to have a plan for higher wages and lower taxes.

Honestly DPF I know you like the idea of having cartoons but your blog is high profile enough that you don’t have to accept submissions from these ridiculous no-talents.

Hold out until you can either devote the resources to pay a professional cartoonist and thus have the right to demand quality, or until you get a really good volunteer.

Right now you are like the town slapper, who’ll say “yes” to any guy just for showing up.

I think you people should ease up a bit. The cartoonist is a real person with real feelings, and this isn’t amateur hour at the local standup where destroying people’s egos and feelings is the expected sport.

The Friday photo of (mostly) birds – does that get the same treatment? Do you really all like bird pictures that much? I doubt it. But at least you show the respect and dignity to let it pass without comment.

Imagine if your own work was put under this amount of repeated negative scrutiny. Either let it pass by or suggest something constructive.

I expect better of you all.

I love the Friday photos – they are usually great images. Blunt is, to put it bluntly, not funny.

Petal, I admit I often skim the bird photos. Here’s the difference.

1) I’m not really interested in bird photos. I am interested in political cartoons.

2) The bird photos might not meet a professional standard but they appear to my untrained casual eye pretty good. Blunt is just awful. Artistically but also in terms of writing. It’s often unclear what he’s talking about, his puns are often incredibly strained, and when he does get a good joke he over-explains it almost as if he doesn’t have confidence in his own ability to be funny.

If I’m putting my work out in a public forum I would expect scrutiny. No, I wouldn’t like being criticised but I wouldn’t claim nobody has a right to criticise. Any professional artist knows that if they cannot hack criticism they are never going to make it.

If you think we have no right to have an opinion of Blunt why aren’t you attacking the (few) people who praise him?
