Feng v Lee
July 28th, 2011 at 12:00 pm by David FarrarAnne Gibson at the NZ Herald reports:
Two female real estate agents came to blows over the sale of an apartment in a fight that left both with minor injuries – and a fine.
The catfight erupted in front of onlookers at an inner-Auckland apartment that both agents – Hulan (Wendy) Feng of City Sales and Soon (Fiona) Lee of LJ Hooker Ponsonby – had been trying to sell. …
The tribunal said the fight was witnessed by the apartment tenant and Ms Lee’s client.
How disappointing that they did not have the presence of mind to film the fight on their cellphones and upload it to You Tube.

Haven’t we grown out of describing female altercations as a ‘catfight’? Or wanting them filmed for our entertainment?

@mikenmild Completely missed the catfight reference. It should’ve been called a fight or assault. If it had been between two mean it would’ve been a very different article. My preference was to assume since they both had Asian last names that they were martial arts experts and they could’ve channelled Michelle Yeoh making Auckland instantly much cooler. This is pretty much how’d I figured it would play out

I agree with that, it’s not something to be promoted as entertainment. FFS, Paula Benett is trying to address a serious problem which includes violence against kids, glorifying fighting as a sad-arsed way of trying to resolve problems can contribute to the acceptance of thuggery.

I went to see some jelly wrestling in a club in Airlie Beach (Queensland) last time I passed through. I had a couple of nice Catholic Irish girls with me and they wanted to shout “sluts” at the wrestlers. Half the wrestlers were Germans. All of them were backpackers. In one of the first round matches, a tiny German girl was up against an enormous hulking German who looked as if she could bench press a Volkswagen. I thought it was going to be a quick match. It was, but not in the way I expected. Tiny German wrestled three times for a total of 6 minutes, and walked away with $800. If that is cheap tawdry exploitation, then she didn’t seem to mind. She did it in t-shirt and shorts too… The crowd tried to encourage semi or full nudity, but she wasn’t cooperating.
That ended about 2am. I was up again at 6am to go scuba diving

I don’t care if they get into a bit of a fight, but clearly since they appear to have both been still standing at the end, they were both pretty useless.
However, this is what’s wrong with some of the sleazy trolls who comment on this blog, right here:

lofty – you’ve just been saying on another thread how Labour keep repeating the same mistakes and wonder why the hell things don’t suddenly work for them.
This country has a major problem with violence, in homes and on the streets. It’s not getting better. I’m sure it’s not everyone who is physically violent, but there is widespread open and tacit approval of violence as an acceptable form of resolution.
Maybe there’s something we keep repeating that is a part of the problem. And it’s not just with some old political party – our society keeps being beaten up. Of course, as for Labour, it’s always some else’s fault.
Think about it.

I understand where you are coming from Pete, but if the mistake is that we can no longer laugh at ourselves, and enjoy life….that my friend is a real problem to me.
Maybe part of the problem is that we all now take ourselves just a little bit too seriously, this also may be part of the problem.
As for me I like to giggle at the absurd now and again. Just like we are all giggling at Goffs rating in the polls..absurdly funny.

Sorry to piss on your amusement, but we have to start thinking why we have such a culture of violence in New Zealand if we want to do anything about it.
Not everyone can differentiate between fun and harm. I remember things like kids in clothes dryers and hung on washing lines, that was probably a hoot for someone at the time.
I understand how some people see amusement in scrap like this. This one seems minor, but fights can easiloy lead to significant harm.
There was recently a case here where one night after work a guy went into MacDonalds to get a hamburger. While he was waiting someone punched him once (for no reason) and would probably had a good laugh about it with his mates afterwards, but I doubt he laughed all the way to prison on a manslaughter charge. The partner of the guy he killed wasn’t laughing either.

Describing the brawl as a “catfight” trivialises the assault to the extent that it is percieved as entertainment. No doubt there will be an aggrieved party and an offensive party to this brawl which presumably will have a sequel in the courts.
Vote:However I would add, anecdotally, that female aggression is more evident and is encouraged in young women ie fight video’s on Youtube. The question we should be asking is why are women becoming more physically aggressive?
July 28th, 2011 at 2:42 pm
Pete, whilst I agree with you, we do live in a violent society, this particular instance seems imported. If youve spent any time in Asia you will know, this is commonplace. Doesnt make it right, I agree. Saw it once in Hong Kong, now thats a place to go apartment shopping. One of the RE agents literally tore the clothes off the other. No way in hell was I getting in the way of that.

@Pete George – I don’t see where you are coming from at all.
Two real estate agents fighting in front of clients over a property is funny and is completely different to a thug in Christchurch bashing someone in the back of the head.
Blanket covering everything because of something at the other end of the scale is a problem is exactly why people go on about the Nanny State.
How many kids lives has the anti-smacking law saved for instance? Is there a substantial drop in violence against children before and after that law came in?

@Pete George Your definition of humour would pretty much rule out about 75% of any movies ever made and more again of any comedy routine. The three stooges slapstick suddenly becomes a precursor to much more sinister things. We’re laughing at the ridiculousness of the fight over real estate sale, not the physical injuries sustained. I don’t see the comparison to thuggery. I would rate tv segments such as “Smashed ‘em bro” on Prime’s show “When the Crowd Goes Wild” to celebrate thuggery much more than finding humour in this “catfight”.

“‘catching up’ in this regard as well as in more positive statistics like education”
As I pointed out to you once before, women caught up, and passed the other sex in education quite some time ago.
On topic, I admit I was amused at the mental image of two female real estate agents fighting over a sale. Partly this is because of the social meme that female violence against other adults is inconsequential (it’s not of course). I agree however with Pete George that we have a culture of violence and disrespect in this country – that applies to all groups.

Two – presumably well-dressed – professional ladies were fighting each other in the presence of a client.
If two professional men wearing suits started fighting each other in front of me, it would likely be just as funny.
The entertainment comes from the absurdity of the whole situation. If you don’t understand this then your sense of humour I’d probably broken.
