Mr Gareth Hughes re-wrote New Zealand history in his maiden speech…telling us that “the British stole soveriegnty in New Zealand in 1840 at the point of a gun”

I later pointed out that in 1840 there were 20 or 50 times more Maori here than pakeha, the former well armed with muskets, and aside from – perhaps – a few marines of Hobson’s ship, there were NO British soldiers here at the time….didn’t faze him in the least…

How dare some Israeli moneybags, must have money to fly around the world at the drop of the hat, describe the hard working rescue workers of Christchurch as incompetant when they themselves were so incompetant that they didn’t bother to get their team accredited proerly like all the other people who rushed to help the people of CHCH. He sounded like a loud mouth and objectionable twat on Morning Report. As I watched TV that afternoon I was impressed by the speed which that crane was organised to rescue those in the high building without a stairwell to escape down.

It’s interesting that Gareth Hughes, he of Ronald McDonald impersonation fame is the Greens’ transport spokesperson (Greens are gender-neutral). In a past life, he describes himself as having been a bogan boy-racer; now he has renounced his leanings towards internal combustion engines, and wants us to take the train everywhere; even to places where trains don’t go!

Ok, time to really fess up….In 1984 I was a “sleeper” for the VRWC within the New Plymouth branch of the Labour Party. To aid in credibility, I delivered pamphlets, and coerced working class Labour supporters on the phone to contribute part of their earnings (or pension) on a weekly basis to what was known as VFL – Victory for Labour. Part of our cunning plan was to convince the elderly that there were FIVE weeks in every month, and so their $10 a week contribution should be $50 a month and not $40.

Sometime in the winter of 1984 – prior to the snap election – I met David Lange in my Humber 90 car. It was fitted with special revolving number plates to confuse the authorities, and a heavy duty ejector seat (thankfully never tested) on the passenger side to enable my controllers to escape if necessary.

The meeting was held in the carpark of what was then the Westown hotel, New Plymouth. Lange instructed me to obtain a false passport so I would be better able to further the aims of the VRWC after he had won the election, implemented what he called “the secret policies”, and later split (as planned) from Labour, together with Roger Douglas, to form a new political party.

Being a loyal Party apparatchik, I did as bidded. Then after the 1984 election, after I found out what the “secret policies” were (does anyone remember Richard Prebble’s ‘Save Rail’ campaign from that year?) I quit the Labour Party in a huff – again on instructions – and went out into the cold for 25 years……

Nah…I just can’t do this….I just don’t have the imagination of a Mickey Savage or other lefties….

A Capitalist Disaster: The Disaster Capitalism complex at work in Christchurch

A local community group ‘Action for Christchurch East’ have commented on the need for a cohesive response in an interesting blog post:

“The mistake we made since September was to assume that business and suited politicians are the best equipped people to deal with natural disasters. The government and decision makers have deliberately segmented the communities’ response. We are encouraged to deal with issues individually and are left hoping that our phone messages are responded to – think back to the community briefings where we were told to line up and deal with our issues “separately”, what a missed opportunity for the community to get organised! Groups that have created a collective response and have shown real promise are now being gagged and trodden on.”[vii]

This lack of democratic process or community involvement in Christchurch is allowing for the situation where private contractors are making huge public gains while taxpayers and private individuals all over the country are paying. Stories are emerging of overbilling, unsatisfactory work and contractors effectively manipulating the system for their personal gain. Fletchers Construction, a large Auckland based nationwide construction firm with powerful ties to many of the largest New Zealand companies and strong political connections was awarded a Multimillion dollar contract to rebuild the city amid allegations of conflict of interest in the tender process. The now familiar approach seen in Iraq and New Orleans of companies sub contracting and sub–sub contracting out this work means that the local people actually doing the work get paid little and have little resources to do an effective and quick job while CEOs and shareholders make a tidy profit. This approach does not create jobs for the worst affected local people and makes them reliant on insubstantial Government handouts.

The poor old DOM-POST leads the front page with more ridiculous garbage about Israeli spies , their speculation seems to be based on the information gleaned from one Nicky HAGER their Investigative Reporter and SIS specialist. Their nonsense is made to appear even more bizarre by another article tucked away on Page 2 by Amanda FISHER who took the trouble to contact relations of the deceased and members of their Kibbutz and writes a competent report which a publication of integrity would have led with. HAGER also has more tripe about how vital information on the Police Computor would be to a foreign espionage expert. Over 10,000 people have legitimate access to such information already and I can’t see any strategic advantage in it to Israel, certainly there would be no need to mount an elaborate scheme to somehow obtain it from somewhere amidst the ruins of an earthquake zone. It appears to me this rubbish story came from HAGER in the first place and was channeled through the editor of the Southland Times to obscure the true source.

What is it that compels mainstream media outlets to buy into conspiracy theories surrounding the all-powerful hidden hand of the Mossad? Despite the fact that the latest piece of conspiracy journalism from New Zealand has already been investigated and found to be bogus, many media outlets just couldn’t help themselves but to report on a piece of non-news.

Even when Israel is squeaky clean of any accusations hurled at it, the media is still intent on reporting those allegations and the investigations into them rather than the less newsworthy end result. Despite the fact that Israel has been cleared of any wrongdoing, the media has placed the attention on the investigation after the verdict has been delivered.

According to The Guardian:

New Zealand intelligence services launched an investigation into a possible Israeli spy operation in Christchurch after suspicious activity was observed in the immediate aftermath of the February earthquake, the New Zealand prime minister, John Key, has confirmed.

But Key insisted the investigation had been completed with no evidence found of wrongdoing.

So what’s the story here? It says much about the obsessive and demonizing behavior towards Israel that so many media outlets decided to publish outlandish claims concerning the Mossad, focused upon an investigation rather than the disproved results.

As for the story itself, it follows a long line of conspiracy theories ranging from the hateful accusations of Mossad involvement in the 9/11 atrocities to the downright absurd Mossad sharks, vultures and any number of highly trained animals serving Israel’s nefarious aims.

According to New Zealand’s Southland Times, the response of the Israeli government was suspicious following the Christchurch earthquake and the deaths and evacuations of Israeli citizens. Despite the paper making the original allegations, at least the Southland Times updated the story under the headline: “Investigation cleared Israelis of spy claims: PM”. Contrast this with some of the other sensationalist headlines which deliberately leave the story open to interpretation:

* Israeli spy claims over Christchurch earthquake – The Guardian
* Mossad spy ring ‘unearthed because of Christchurch earthquake’ – Daily Telegraph
* Report: NZ quake exposes possible Israeli spy ring – MSNBC
* NZ quake may have revealed Israeli spy ring – CBS News
* Israeli spy killed in Christchurch quake: reports – ABC News
* Report: Israeli killed in NZ quake was suspected spy – USA Today

Contrast these with the more accurate and updated headlines from other media:

* Israeli victim of NZ earthquake not a spy, says PM – Associated Press
* Israelis cleared of spying claims – Canberra Times

Former JPost Executive Editor Amir Mizroch takes apart the Southland Times’s ridiculous allegations:

“The response of the Israeli government to the three deaths appears extraordinary. In the hours after the 6.3 quake struck:

“Prime Minister John Key fielded the first of four calls that day from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.” [Maybe Netanyahu wanted to help New Zealand and needed a back-and-forth to figure out exactly what the country needed from Israel; and maybe he was trying to convince Key to let the Israeli search and rescue teams at the site to work to get the Israeli’s body after local police at the scene kicked them out; and maybe Netanyahu was worried about the three Israelis who were known to be missing.]

“Israel’s Ambassador in the South Pacific, Shemi Tzur, who is based in Australia, booked flights to Christchurch, where he visited the morgue.” [How terrible of him; how suspicious of him, to want to fly out as soon as is humanly possible to take care of logistics for flying the men home, of being in touch with the families, of being a good Ambassador; oh, and it is considered a duty in Jewish law to sit with the bodies of Jews until they are brought for final burial.]

“Israel’s civil defence chief left Israel for Christchurch.” [Yes, to help the New Zealanders. Israel has the most advanced, skilled and respected civil defense outfit in the world. Way to look a gift horse in the mouth.]

“A complete Israeli urban search and rescue squad was assembled and flown to Christchurch, arriving about the same time as …” [This is what Israeli insurance companies do when Israelis are trapped, missing, or need urgent assistance abroad: they fly in and try help. They don’t always wait for the government to approve a mission.]

“Three people who had smashed their way out of a van crushed by a concrete pillar in the central city, leaving a fourth person dead in the vehicle, arrived back in Israel.” [Yes because what they should have done is picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, put it all down to a bit of bad luck, and continued travelling and exploring the beautiful countryside.]

Yes, the response of the Israeli government was ‘extraordinary’ – extraordinary in its compassion for the dead and for the bereaved families, for the religious needs of the victims [it is considered a duty in Jewish law to sit with the bodies of Jews until they are brought for final burial]. Hey Southland Times, Israelis care for their own. We care about foreigners too, which is why our government offered to help, and why we sent our Civil Defense Chief to your earthquake zone – to help.

The Southland Times also alleged that the Israeli earthquake victim was found with as many as five passports on his person. Yet The Guardian reports:

Key said he had been advised that reports of Israeli citizens carrying multiple passports were ill-founded and he was satisfied with police assurances that there had been no unauthorised access to the police computer system.

“The investigations that have been undertaken have been thorough and have found no evidence of a link between the group and Israeli intelligence.” …

Key said the man was found with a European passport. His companions handed over a second passport, his Israeli one, when they left the country.

Even if the Israeli had five passports on him, this is easily explainable. As a nation of many immigrants, large numbers of Israelis have dual nationality and therefore at least two passports. And perhaps the victim may have been keeping the group’s passports together in one place during their travels.

It may very well be that some of the media outlets that have published the story using ambiguous headlines will update them as the hours pass and fresh wire service feeds are checked. Nonetheless what we have seen is a classic example of how a story concerning Israel, later proven to be untrue, spreads throughout the global media in a ‘feeding frenzy’ causing yet more damage to Israel’s image.

As the Scientific American reports:

After people realize the facts have been fudged, they do their best to set the record straight: judges tell juries to forget misleading testimony; newspapers publish errata. But even explicit warnings to ignore misinformation cannot erase the damage done, according to a new study from the University of Western Australia. …

This result shows that “even if you understand, remember and believe the retractions, this misinformation will still affect your inferences,” says Western Australia psychologist Ullrich Ecker, an author of the study.

No doubt this conspiracy will stick around on the Internet no thanks in small part to the many journalists who cannot resist a good conspiracy story involving Israel.

The Eurozone Financial Crisis is really getting into full swing. Watching domestic leaders herded and pushed by unelected central government is fascinating. Their responses are not so much important in preventing/delaying/invoking crisis, more an opportunity to assert national sovereignty, or to capitulate to central demands. Meantime the US looks ready to default unless they vote themselves a new debt ceiling.

Europe and the US should be a lesson to us. A focus on consumption, endless state-created entitlements and spineless financial market controls is causing once proud nations to haemorrhage. We’re not that far behind.

Penny appears to be happily engaged with the registrar of the High Court trying to file proceedings that she said she filed some time ago. She is also happily posting sections of the Criminal Justice Act in order to prove that there was no jurisdiction to make the order that she is trying to set aside (slightly editing the section while she is at it and leaving out the more significant features and totally overlooking the Court of Appeal decision that stated that the court did have jurisdiction to make the order). I am sure that this will keep her pleasantly occupied for a number of months to come although, given that she has taken us all under her wing in a motherly way in order to protect us from ourselves, the international banks, John Key and the pernicious judges of the world, I have no doubt that she casts her I across to Kiwi blog from time to time in order to ensure that we do not stray far from the beaten track. Your mention of her name will no doubt prick her interest.

no calves to feed, no feed to stack – nothin’!!

Blokes haz gotta shave though, but its not so bad, coz there’s lotsa hot
water and even a light to see what ya doing!

At brekky ya get cereal, fruit and eggs but there’s no kangaroo steaks
or possum stew like wot Mum makes. You don’t get fed again until noon,
and by that time all the city boys are buggered because we’ve been on a
‘route march’ – geez its only just like walking to the windmill in the
back paddock!!

This one will kill me brothers Doug and Phil with laughter. I keep
getting medals for shootin’ – dunno why. The bullseye is as big as a
bloody possum’s bum and it don’t move and its not firing back at ya like
the Johnsons did when our big scrubber bull got into their prize cows
before the Ekka last year! All ya gotta do is make yourself comfortable
and hit the target – its a piece of piss!!

You don’t even load your own cartridges – they comes in little boxes and
ya don’t have to steady yourself against the rollbar of the roo shooting
truck when you reload!

Sometimes ya gotta wrestle with the city boys and I gotta be real
careful coz they break easy – it’s not like fighting with Doug and Phil
and Jack and Boori and Steve and Muzza all at once like we do at home
after the muster.

Turns out I’m not a bad boxer either and it looks like I’m the best the
platoon’s got, and I’ve only been beaten by this one bloke from the
Engineers – he’s 6 foot 5 and 15 stone and three pickhandles across the
shoulders and as ya know I’m only 5 foot 7 and eight stone wringin’ wet,
but I fought him till the other blokes carried me off to the boozer.

I can’t complain about the Army – tell the boys to get in quick before
word gets around how bloody good it is.

1. Your houseplants are alive, and you can’t smoke any of them.
2. Having sex in a single bed is out of the question.
3. You keep more food than beer in the fridge.

19. 90% of the time you spend in front of a computer is for real work.
20. When you find out your friend is pregnant you congratulate them instead of asking “Oh shit what the hell happened?
