A little testy

August 16th, 2011 at 4:14 pm by David Farrar

The Taranaki Daily News pointed out in a recent editorial that Andrew Little will be in Parliament regardless of whether or not he wins New Plymouth.

Andrew wrote the letter above saying there is only a “slim possibility” there will be two MPs in Parliament with strong links to New Plymouth.

Now Andrew is ranked No 15 on the Labour list, which is No 6 on their effective list. So long as Labour gets 22% he should get elected to Parliament.

So when Andrew says there is only a “slim possibility” there will be two MPs in Parliament with strong links to New Plymouth, the only two interpretations I can take from this is:

  1. Andrew thinks there is only a slim possibility that Labour will win 22% or more of the party vote; or
  2. Andrew will not maintain any presence in New Plymouth if he fails to win the seat, and will be based elsewhere as a List MP – presumably Wellington

Perhaps Andrew could clarify which of these two interpretations is correct, or perhaps they both are?

Maybe he thinks there is only a slim possibility of Young being re-elected for the seat.

LMFAO, he talks about our roads – after how many years of Labour neglect? You complete tosser Little. Finally a half decent 2 x 2 bypass out of town north, after how many years of pissing about? Cant wait to encounter him on the street and enter into a battle of wits. Hope he brings his half. And tells us which hat he is wearing. And whether he thinks its OK for unions to not pay their tax bills.

He has also fairly much said that list MPs are useless and have no place in speaking out on issues in the regions that they come from, – (Now whether that is true is not the point)

I wonder how the large number of Labour list MPs that describe themselves as the List MP from XXX feel about their job not being to advocate for people in their region…

But I agree it is a fairly testy letter, and I get the feeling that if Mr Young is re-elected Mr Little will say it was because of the Local media.

Little needs to walk a fine line. He wants to oppose the ’2 MPs for the price of one’ nonsense, but might be better off simply stressing that the electorate vote should be for the person local voters feel would best represent them.

Little said based on the present MPs performance. There will only be one whose job it will be to speak for New Plymouth and argue New Plymouth’s case in the corridors of power in Wellington. Andrew might well be walking the corridors of power being 15th on his party’s list, but he and his party won’t be in power. If New Plymouth vote for him or not, he is still only a voice in opposition. Strategically it would still be better for NP to have two MPs representing them. Little being the strong opposition voice in parliament would help keep the local elected MP focused on the local and regional issues. But the fact that he is still driving his union car to candidate meetings and living temporarily a his mothers home while campaigning in the electorate. Would suggest your right in both cases.

The people of Taranaki would have to be losers either way. Realistically, another union-oriented, narrow-visioned, ambition-driven Labour misfit with dreams of party leadership in parliament isn’t going to do much for them or anyone else in the country.

A vote for the present MP certainly will not be a vote for two MPs for New Plymouth, and on current performance, may be a vote for less than one.

SERIOUSLY… If you vote for one you could get two or one but never less than one… unless off course as DPF suggests Little intention is to live in Wellington full time.. then he is the less than one… leaving the New Plymouth voters no choice than to vote for the other one.. which would give them less than two but more than one.. not a vote for two or less than one.

I don’t quite get this bit:

on current performance, may be a vote for less than one

Did he just diss the Labour Party’s current performance? Or did he just say that on current performance, that he could be considered to be less than a full MP (in fact, maybe a third of an MP given 3 hats), or is there something else? I mean, this is a letter, not a off the cuff remark, so it must mean something, but it seems a rather odd way to express yourself.

The truth be known that Jonathan Young has taken a while to be an effective MP, whether this due to his youth or just being out of his depth in his first 2 years and is only just now finding his voice. He can only get better and perhaps having Little oppose him will bring out the best in him.

To give Little the benefit of the doubt.. He is saying that the local incumbent is not doing a good job representing New Plymouth… and that they would be better off voting him to represent them.

But that doesn’t neglect the fact that they would get him anyway voting for the incumbent.

    #falsedichotomy

He’s pretty clearly saying 1) the incumbent MP is doing a piss poor job of representing New Plymouth, and 2) even if both of them were elected, only one of them (the electorate MP) would really be representing New Plymouth’s interests.

Really not that hard to figure out (if you don’t read the piece through a blue-tinted lens).

  23. Lee C (4,499) Says:

I have to agree with Origen.

But we can’t overlook this: that Andrew Little is electioneering in the media, and the TDN has given him the exposure he desired, perhaps because he’s ssuccessfully dressed his letter up as motivated by a desire to defend the sanctity of MMP.

What it cleverly does however, is snipe at a range of people and promote himself as (unelected) saviour of the good people of Taranaki. So although it does not represent Little as a modest man, it certainly does indicate that he considers himself a bit of a messiah.

So, in short he’s warming up his ass – so now cue palm leaves and joyous crowds as He prepares to pass through the city gates in triumph.

Whether the good citizens of Taranaki like it or not, it appears . . . . Hosannah!

The question remains for me: once he is firmly on his ass, will he cut a figure more like Jesus Christ, or Don Quixote?
