Snowing in Wellington

August 14th, 2011 at 5:26 pm by David Farrar

Snow in Wellington is very rare, and snow of this intensity even rarer. Had a great view from the apartment and could see huge lumps of snow. Snapped a few photos:

Only lasted around 15 minutes but was very cool. The temperature noticeably dropped also. Heater is now working overtime.

I’m sure Luc has a sensible and honest comment to make about this.

I’m at about 10m above sea level in the Hutt Valley, we’ve had some sleet but no full on snow. Friends up on the western hills have reported snow and it looks like it is snowing on the Eastern Hills.

Edit – it’s now snowing in Fairfield!!

Lots of snow going from Tawa to the Hutt an hour ago. Never seen anything like it round here. Most traffic only going about 40kph along the motorway. Not so bad in the Hutt, but getting colder!

My mother saw snow on hilltops in the Hokianga during the 1940s so there go the warmists who will try to tell you its all caused by man made CO2.

There was round about 1978 I think snow an inch deep on Christmas day in the hills behind Perth. Mind you it didn’t stay on the ground for long. Two weeks later, max temp 41.

If you remember, that’s when the fraudulent Greens and today’s warmists were all coldists. (Without a castle)

I was a bit stupid and tried driving up Wrights Hill in Karori. 10cm of snow on the road so I didn’t make it and was lucky not to slide off the road. A few dozen other sightseers in cars didn’t help the slippery ride either. Most of Karori is blanketed in snow – it’s hard to find a patch of green grass.

It’s been driving in off and on all day in Dunedin, and settled to sea level. It’s the worst I’ve seen it for a few years – that’s not very bad – and it usually settles more at night.

But…the forecasting has been accurate so far and they’re predicting it will be worse tomorrow and on into Tuesday.

Most unusual to see good old Wellington under snow. The hill suburbs make for dangerous driving.

Well, the weather forecast for Christchurch was wrong. No snow yet, it’s only going to hit late this evening now.

Snowing in Queenstown now, but only a centimetre or two on the ground so far. There is more higher up on the hills. I am expecting/hoping for more.

Mayor traffic issues in northern suburbs, so much snow that cars couldn’t make it up the hills. Had to rescue family (never thought I’d ever have to fit snow chains in Wellington).

That is where the old Volksie Beetles came into their own. Good traction in snow and no need to worry about anti-freeze – no radiator. In a USA city years ago, the only police car that could handle the snow was a Beetle used for parking enforcement.

With all due respect to “Hitlers Revenge” it could hardly be used for pursuit or enforcement! :)

I hope you are paying heater time-and-a-half, or it’s going to go to the heaters’ union and organise a strike.

Well, the East Coast is basically isolated for now. State Highways 2 & 5 closed, road to Gisborne closed (Nuhaka to Gisborne), Waikaremoana, Napier Taihape closed, and apparently all the backroads south including Porangahau Rd and the Ormondville Road. Snow on the ground from about Waipawa/Waipukurau South. Te Mata Peak snow down over half way, yep, a good storm indeed, and more to come.

Anyone up North, any snow on the Bombays, Waitakeres or Hunuas ?

Nice dump of snow on the Eastern Hills above the Hutt Valley this morning. Looks beautiful, with more to come today. Heaviest snow here since 1983 at least.
