Jones on VSM
September 29th, 2011 at 9:21 am by David FarrarOn Backbenches last night, Wallace Chapman asked all the MPs whether they supported VSM, including Labour MP Shane Jones. A transcript:
Wallace: Should we have VSM for student unions?
Shane: Yeah, yeah we should
It’s great to have one Labour MP speak out in favour of VSM, despite his party having an ideological stance against it.
But it does also point to the crumbling discipline within Labour. On Tuesday a Labour MP reveals the entire Maori caucus wants Goff gone, and on Wednesday another MP reveals he disagrees with his party on an issue which they have spent all year fighting tooth and nail.

“on Wednesday another MP reveals he disagrees with his party on an issue which they have spent all year fighting tooth and nail.”
Good point DPF. However, do you think the MSM will pick up on it? Not likely.
They will instead focus on an ACT candidate who has a different view than the party leader on an issue that is not party policy.

hmmm. I wonder if Jones is taking advice from Rudd?

Well, the hard left and the unionists are not going to be happy with that!
As the election draws closer, Labour seem to be going into serious meltdown.
More popcorn please

Must be difficult for a fellow like Jones to put up with the rampant reds in Labour and their stupid ideas.
He probably feels he is being pulled two ways most of the time.

Shane Jones has gone up in my estimation.

Jones will not be bending backwards over for the Rainbow Branch of the Labour Party.

Or forwards for that matter

I don’t agree with a lot of what he says, but he seems to be the only one with multiple functioning braincells.

No great fan of anyone in the Labour Party, but Jones would be a far better leader than Goff, and hes not beholden to the union/feminist/gay factions.
Vote:September 29th, 2011 at 10:12 am
i have a withered houseplant that would be a better leader than Goff. Hardly a massive benchmark.
Vote:September 29th, 2011 at 10:16 am
I suspect that Jones’ tactic is to try and latch on to populist issues and milk them for what he can get – simply in order to try and increase his levels of support.
Labour’s issue is that they actually have no-one in their ranks to roll Goff. If Jones emerges from the pack, then at least he will have emerged. Everyone else seems to be wallowing in the same swamp….
Sigh….

Are we sure Shane realised what VSM stands for?

Individual MP’s are certainly not required to agree with their parties entire manifesto.
I bet there are national mp’s who think a capital gains tax is a good idea.
But, announcing it in public should be a no-no.
Which is why Brash is a silly man for making his private views become Act policies without first obtaining consensus agreement.
Someone in labour should attempt a takeover now-it is clear labour are going to fail in the next election so any new leader would not be blamed-and , the one who gets in first may be the next labour PM.

DPF forgot to add that Jones also said: “Freedom is important. Any individual should be free to choose the type of porn one wants to watch in the sanctity of a hotel room.“

Maybe Brash could go for a conglomerate party?
MPs from a party should be able to express different personal views in public, it’s normal to not all agree. It is simply the way it’s done. Eg:
“Yeah, yeah we should have VSM and Robertson is a munter for stuffing this one up”
Vote:versus
“”My personal preference is for VSM but the party as a whole opposes it”.

You mean like “Kronic is bad” but “fags and piss are good” Pete?
Vote:September 29th, 2011 at 11:48 am
Ha, JB, here’s an opening for me.
In my personal opinion Kronic is potentially bad (a view shared by people who have tried it) and should prove it’s safety before being able to be sold, like any new version of any drug.
Fags (tobacco version) are bad for me too but are so entrenched in parts of our society that they can’t just be banned, we have to try and phase them out.
Alcohol is also too entrenched to just ban – and I think there’s a good case for not banning it anyway, many people use alcohol responsibly, and it’s not addictive to most people. As was done for drink driving I think we need to change the attitude towards getting pissed out of one’s tree and using it as an excuse to do stupid and destrictive things.
I think this is on the right track: http://www.unitedfuture.org.nz/dunne-next-government-will-overhaul-misuse/

Nice to see that fags (non tobacco version) are good for you Pete.
Should enhance your appeal to a wider electorate come the 26th!
Vote:September 29th, 2011 at 11:57 am
PG, why don’t you stop trying to be a do-gooder? Let other people live their lives. Period.
Vote:September 29th, 2011 at 12:08 pm
Manolo, it didn’t let either of my parents live their lives.
Mother – esophageal cancer
Father – emphysema
So I’m biased against fags and commercial exploitation of vulnerable people via deliberate addiction. Besides (hurredly remembering) I think reducing tobacco consumption is even supported by most smokers.
Vote:September 29th, 2011 at 12:21 pm
Yeah I quit after 30 years Pete. A mugs game, but you can’t force people to do it.
Vote:One day the realisation comes that you are a dickhead if you smoke and if you are lucky that happens before the little cells start changing to much. I’m still here 13 years later, so far so good!
September 29th, 2011 at 12:54 pm
In my personal opinion, tobacco is proven bad (a view shared by people who have tried it and by every medical journal known to man) and should be….hmmm…….
We expect Pete Dunne to get right on it. I look forward to seeing him be consistent.

I’ve gotta say, I was there (obviously) and I did a bit of a double take hearing Jones say that. I didn’t clarify it with him, but I think the casual way he said it suggested he actually meant the opposite of what he said, that by “supporting VSM” he actually meant “supporting student unions”. That might seem a bit implausible, but as he’s probably one of the MPs who really doesn’t care too much about the issue, he might not be as conversant with the lingo. I think otherwise he might’ve supported his viewpoint with a few reasons, which he didn’t.
Not wanting to put words in his mouth, but that’s what I think.

Oh, and just for clarity, before anyone starts calling me a pinko defender commie scum etc etc…. as I’ve mentioned on the show a few times before, I’m a long-standing pro VSM supporter and was involved in the (what turned out to be inadequate and half-arsed) legislation getting through in the 90s…
