Rugby World Cup 25 September 2011
September 25th, 2011 at 10:20 am by David FarrarWell that wasn’t a bad game at all. After 30 minutes NZ had a bigger lead over France than Australia had managed against the United States. The final score of 37-17 was possibly generous towards the French.
Was great to see Richie McCaw get presented with a literal cap for his 100th test cap – the first All Black to achieve this. Was also moving to see an obviously ill Jock Hobbs present it to him.
Today
- 3.30 pm – Fiji v Samoa at Eden Park. Go Samoa, who should have a supportive crowd
- 6.00 pm – Ireland v Russia at Rotorua. Russia are the under dogs but I have to support Ireland.
- 8.30 pm – Argentina v Scotland in Wellington. As my maternal family tree includes 12 generations of Scots, they’re my pick.

France came out looking like they genuinely meant business then gave up the ghost after NZ scored the first try! Always very hard to get a gauge on how your team is doing when you play France- As France are so damn erratic!
As for the dig at Australia- Comparisons with the scoreline of other games are irrelevant and illogical in a tournament such as this. And how quickly we forget that Australia beat NZ just weeks ago….
I’m cheering loudly for Fiji today- Interesting to see if Samoa blurt out their pathetic and offensive ‘Racist Conspiracy’ and ‘Holocaust’ excuses if they lose again!
And go the Argies!!

The first 15 mins was all France and there appeared to me to be an illegal takeout, and later a kick an chase tackle in the air each of which mitigated against possible French tries. It wouldn’t have affected the final result though. The All Black defense was awesome throughout and the Weepu-Jane combination which produced the first try a gem.
Go FIJI
I assume you will be wearing your ancestral kilt to the game, look forward to the picture tomorrow.

I am in New York and what’s with all this RWC stuff. What am I going to do for the next few weeks for some decent NZ political comment. ??

I thought Richie McCaw spoke really well when he was presented with his cap. A credit to his sportsmanship and his loyalty to the team. Great speech!

Yea Ritchie was awesome – I think a bit overcome by the enormity of the milestone. Was sad to see the extent to which Jock Hobbs’ battle with cancer has taken its toll – it added to the touching moment. McCaw is getting close to Meads like immortality!
The game was worth the 4am bed time! A stunning utu for Cardiff.
Loved Gregor Paul’s Herald article on the game http://www.nzherald.co.nz/rugby-world-cup-2011/news/article.cfm?c_id=522&objectid=10754180

McCaw’s a cheat!!!!!!!

You loved Gregor Paul’s article? I was wondering if he was drunk when he wrote that obnoxious drivel- He blatantly and arrogantly rubbishes the Boks and the Aussies (Can you imagine the howls of outrage around NZ if an Aussies journo wrote that about the ‘Adi- Blacks’)…Didn’t we learn a lesson on overcockiness and arrogance in 2007??
Utu for Cardiff?? I remember the test match against France at Carisbrook in 2009 being widely promoted as the ‘revenge’ match…now conveniently forgotten I guess….

There it is!! Stuff website headline is bragging “World Cup Done and Dusted”
Good grief- Do we never learn to be humble and dignified in victory (or defeat?)??

Longknives
Aussie journos regularly write smack about the ABs and glorify the Wallabies. 2009 game was not during a World Cup. Get over yourself. It was an awesome game but it was a pool game – lots more work to be done.
By all your whining you must be a Pom.

Freakin seriously? One reasonably good game against France B and claiming its in the bag? FFS. Have they not noticed that South Africa have been playing great too, and England finally are starting to put it together. Australia will rebound from Ireland as well. There’s still a lot of rugby to be played.

@KH 11.21
Go see Helen Clark and ask her about how to win the Election with Goff and Mallard behaving like jerks.
Report back here.
Second thoughts, don’t do that, we don’t care

Nope- I’m a New Zealander born and bred, Played rugby for twenty odd years as well. I’m just bloody sick of this attitude that the World “Owes us a World Cup”, everybody else is “Hopeless” and if we lose then god help the Ref (or the waitress who served us dinner)…
The All Blacks were impressive last night- but as Hagues rightfully points out there is a HELL of a long way to go…
Am I not a genuine All Black fan simply because I respect the opposition?? I have tremendous respect for South Africa, Australia and England and look forward to some epic upcoming battles .. I just think Gregor Paul mocking them mercilessly is premature and ridiculously arrogant.
