Apples for Julia

October 17th, 2011 at 2:56 pm by David Farrar

Hawkes Bay Today reports:

Hawke’s Bay apple producer Apollo made a cheeky but tasteful offer to Australian Prime Minister for the semifinal between the All Blacks and Wallabies.

Apollo’s director, Bruce Beaton, packed a carton of New Zealand Queen and asked Napier MP to transport the fruit to Prime Minister ’s house in Auckland at the weekend.

“The idea was that if Julia was over watching the rugby with John in Auckland, she could have a tasty New Zealand apple to munch after the game,” Mr Beaton said.

She wasn’t there, but hopefully the apples will get to her in Australia.

Didn’t John Key and Gillard have a bet on the game?
Loser will eat one of the other countries apples and declare how wonderful it is.

Although the Australian government has reluctantly allowed our apples in following the WTO ruling, individual states (such as South Australia) are now banning them as a “quarantine” measure, and the big two supermarket chains, Coles and Woolworths, have triumphantly announced they will not stock NZ apples.

As Woolworths Australia owns the Foodtown-Countdown-Woolworths chain in New Zealand, and sources more than 60 per cent of the products sold in those stores from Australia, there is scope for a “Boycott Aussie” campaign here, gang.
