I decided to wander through Aotea Square on my way to work this morning at 6:45, curious about the local branch of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

I was surprised that there were actually quite a few tents there – didn’t count them, but probably around 50 or so is my guess. (How many of them were occupied is another guess – I decided not to check that out :)). The majority of the signs, placards, and banners are home-made and hence do very little to give the impression of a well-organised protest. The only professional-looking banners I saw were those of Unite (man, I’m glad I no longer belong to any union). The general thrust seems to be “We’re p@#$ed off at the rich pricks” – probably evenly split between the original intentions of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement (ie bankers and financiers) and just “rich pricks” in general. A few anti-John Key, anti-National, and anti-Don Brash. The usual handful of “Legalise Marijuana” signs. I also saw one sign advertising “Medicinal Marijuana” … hmmm …

There was one sign (hand-written) about the general rules of the place – use hand-sanitiser, wear sunblock, etc. – but also included advice on what to do if pepper-sprayed. WTF? If this is a peaceful protest, why would they even expect that to happen? Sounds to me like they’re hoping for some martyr-opportunities.

Someone had breakfast cooking – smelled nicer than my Weetbix, dammit. (Wonder if they were Mad Butcher sausages?) And I’m fairly sure I saw Penny Bright turn up, just as I was leaving to go to work.

The mayor has given his approval, for a while. Ocupation Octagon continues.

The occupation has made a has made a bold statement, but what is it, how long will it stay and what does it really hope to achieve?

It’s a knarly day here in Dunedin, not great camping weather.

I might wander through there this afternoon to see if they’ve woken up yet … Other than a few people cooking breakfast, it was quiet. Everyone still asleep I guess, and me without a loudhailer so beloved of Unite, John Minto and Penny Bright 🙂

Really? All it has said to me is that the usual smelly placard wavers and dissidents have opted to get together whilst the long suffering taxpayers continue to pick up the tab for their benefits.

Rather than protesting the so called ‘rich’, they should be praying that the taxpayers of the world continue to support the drop out life styles of the great unwashed.

Maybe its time a few people turned up on the hour from midnight and tested out the latest in hand held air horns. 😀

What a pack of soft cocks our home grown protesters have become. They are definitely a product of decadent city living. Surely there must be some ex army types who would be willing to give them a trumpet reveille at say 5am on each protest day.

By dragging their unwashed bodies out of their smelly sleeping bags at dawn they could increase the effective hours of protest by upwards of 20%.

Seems they’ve got a few of you lot where they want you.

If the media weren’t by necessity pandering to the rubber neckers, then the kids’d all pack up and go back home to their X-boxes.

As for Dan Wealdon, well Elaycee posts a sobby eulogy, and then provides a link to the snuff movie.

DavidC – like the Queen Street department store where there was a fire early this year. According to the media it was a biggie. 100 year old sprinkler system contained it, firefighters soon had it out – they blew the smoke out of the building – staff screened off the small affected area – opened for business at usual time. Cause – electrical fault in point of sale machine.

My 15-year-old daughter has returned from a weekend camp for St Johns – they had to get up at 06:00 every morning to be on parade by 06:30 (remembering this is during school holidays – lie in, what lie in?) Wouldn’t have been too difficult for her, she gets up at 06:15 or so every morning as she has to catch the school bus by 7:35. Yes she has missed it a couple of times, and my wife has had to chase the bus, and boy she did not let our daughter forget it.

Reckon she could teach them a thing or two.

The sad thing is, I could actually believe that some of the original protests had some merit. That is, the protests that started in America targetting excessive corporate greed and influence. But now the protests seem to be directionless, with no coherent policy, and unfortunately the majority of the people that are taking part in New Zealand aren’t exactly doing the cause any favours.

Passed the Octagon this am at 9. Not one beardie in sight,tents appeared to be empty. I reckon they were in a cafe drinking imported unsustainably and exploitatively grown coffee,paid for by the dole or student loans.

Who are they? Socialist Aotearoa, Nrml(Dope smokers inc.),a trade union flag,a Maori sovereignty flag and an anti Israel flag. So it’s the Dunedin rent a mob.

Labour’s Sport Policy gets the Thumbs-down

Trev’s Sport Policy looks like another failure to think matters through.
Per the NZ Herald – Manoj Daji [Chief Executive – College Sport Auckland] gives a real-world view of Trev’s policy. He lists many reasons why it won’t work in the Super City of about 100,000 secondary students.
“With the sport spread across the week we are battling for venues and facilities. Having all sport on a given afternoon would not only cause major transportation issues for schools but also place extra pressure on limited facilities and reduce the ability to draw on community volunteers for coaching and officiating, whom we are reliant on”
Looks like another one of his half-baked ideas.

That is totally not what the occupations are supposed to be about but it was probably inevitable that they would become vehicles for protest organisations. It stuffs the whole ideal.

Seems in the US, well known personages from the media are crafting releases for the OWS crowd and then reporting on it.
Another cache of emails has been released that shows same.

Big Journalism has learned that the Occupy Washington DC movement is working with well-known media members to craft its demands and messaging while these media members report on the movement. Someone has made the emails from the Occupy Wall Street email distro public and searchable.

The names in the list are a veritable who’s who in media.
Journolist 2.0 includes well known names such as MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan, Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi who both are actively participating; involvement from other listers such as Bill Moyers and Glenn Greenwald plus well-known radicals like Noam Chomsky, remains unclear. The list also includes a number of radical organizers, such as Kevin Zeese.

In these emails we see MSNBC’s Ratigan, hawking his book in the footnotes, instructing occupiers on how properly to present their demands and messages while simultaneously appearing on television reporting “objectively” on the story (when he’s not taking part in the protests himself as content.)

One of the groups that probably started this, Adbusters Media Foundation, a primary protest organizer, stated that the central demand of the protest is that President Obama “ordain a Presidential Commission tasked with ending the influence money has over our representatives in Washington”. But then other groups started to join in, and seem to have hijacked the original intention for their own goals. In America, apparently the encampment split into two lines: those who want to draft focused demands about the unequal distribution of wealth in the United States; and those who want the protest to remain amorphous and to grow through spectacle.

At the end of the day, the fact that this is supposed to be a leaderless movement is gonna cause problems. Try getting common agreement about anything from that lot …

One fine day in Ireland, a guy is out golfing and gets up to the 16th hole. He tees up and cranks one. Unfortunately, it goes into the woods on the side of the fairway.He goes looking for his ball and comes across this little guy with this huge knot on his head and the golf ball lying right beside him.
‘Goodness,’ says the golfer then proceeds to revive the poor little guy.

Sure, when they edited it down to those parts of those encounters. Cutting off the editing of the girl saying something like, “What are our demands? I can say what my demands are…” and she’s gone. Who knows what she said after that? Probably wasn’t the intensely entertaining genius of goading old men and women.

There are left-wing versions of the same thing, such as when Chaser’s War on Everything went around the South of the US asking people to find Iraq on a world map.

The National Party’s released the shortlist of candidates seeking to stand in Tamaki.

The seat’s been left up for grabs following incumbent MP Allan Peachey’s decision to step down at the election for health reasons.

Former United Future President Denise Krum has made the shortlist, as has former Wellington central candidate Mark Thomas who missed out in 1996 after then Prime Minister Jim Bolger endorsed ACT’s Richard Prebble for the seat.

Also after the nomination are former Auckland City Councillor Toni Millar, National Party Northern Region Deputy Chair Simon O’Connor, and Seby Reeves, son of former National MP Graham Reeves.
