As a F&B subscriber, I would never mistake this for an unauthorized ad for the Greens. 😛

I think the Greens are more concerned with human affairs that the boring old habitat, though that appears to have been changing for the better lately.

iPredict has been interesting over the past 24 hours – Act out, no NZF, National able to govern alone with a few bonus support seats each to Maori and United.

What I really want to see happen is the Labour voters who have gone Green to panic in the last week and switch back to Labour. A drop of a few % plus the Greens normal 2% election day drop could give them the boot. Oh well, one can only dream…

So here’s an interesting quote from a Mt Maunganui surfer in today’s paper.

“To me, it is just a commonsense thing. If I could see or smell oil and other crap floating around out there, then I wouldn’t go out. But it looks good out there.”

So, no oil Armageddon like the Greens and Labour said. Hopefully this leads to a credibility downgrade for the enviro-wowsers.

Minister Sharples Lying Over Waka Attendance?

I watched the Aussie/Welsh game there on Friday night at the Waka. It wasn’t full really. I was surprised that it wasn’t a packed house.

This is exactly, the waste that Ron Paul had been saying about in recent GOP debates. Somehow, presidents/prime-minsters almost think that they can just give dosh from taxpayers’ pockets at will as if its their own money with no accountability at all. The Waka is a fuckn’ waste. Let Maoris fund the Waka. But John Key wants to satisfy Peter Sharples, we all know that. John Key should have used his own money rather than taxpayers’ purse for his self adulation for Mr Sharples.

As a share holder, ex shop steward and worker I do believe that the amount paid to the leaders of business has become somewhat out of proportion to their worth. The apparent disconnection between the failures of the management in many businesses to the rewards received is some thing that needs to change. This would be better driven by the share holders than a bunch of semi illiterate bludgers. That governments have bailed businesses out rather than allow them to fail is unjust and against my market driven principles. BNZ, Air NZ and the finance company’s should have all been allowed to collapse under their own stupid management.
The overheated property market was apparent to anyone with any economic sense. The rates paid by Bridgecorp etc were way to low compared to the risks. Even poor little old me knew that yet it was impossible to explain this to the ignorant around me.

Never mind Ive brought a coastal property at 45% of GV in a fire sale crises = opportunity

I agree with the rest of what you say Griff. That’s a real problem with this, legitimate and widespread complaints are being overtaken by very small minority activists who want to convert the country (and the world) to a political system that discredited itself spectacularly last century.

This is seldom practical. All the main companies have substantial shareholders 10-20 pension funds,other corporations, equity groupings who through their holdings have all the influence. They invariably vote for everything put up by the Company Directors because their own groups operate on the same principles and their remuneration within their groups like that of the company in which they hold shares. The multitude of small shareholders have no influence.

In my very limited contact some time back with the CHCh anarchists , IO noticed that they tend to harp on about Spanish anarchism ; they glorify this period in Spanish history..show old Spanish movies etc..The irony being that Spanish anarchism was quashed by Spanish Communism. An Australian journalist friend who travels to Europe frequently says it is the same in Aussie and Europe…..this glorification of 1930s Spain. So in this they are typical of any fundamentalist group , looking back on some period they now consider to be an ideal time. As I understand it , these groups are closely in touch with one another; hence the speed with which these occupy groups spread around the world..I think they have lead to violence in Melbourne and Sydney…
The leaders tend to very zealous, scary…many of the followers are young people. They offer child care facilities at their meetings etc.

Is Paul Reynolds really worth seven mill. Thats just his pay there are far more costs to support these leaders the flash office the perks the staff etc etc. Does he really add more value than 100 technicians would?
I fitted out a corporate office last year the tat that management deem their right blows the mind compared with wot the guys on the shop floor get. Workers get a stuffy little smoko room chipped cups and vinyl. Management get coffee machines wine fridges designer cutlery leather and exotic woodwork.

I understand you point about pension funds,other corporations and equity groupings. They have overinflated salaries and top heavy salary structures as well. How this can be changed I have no idea that it needs to I am sure.

Thanks Joanna, a good insight.

One impression I get from the occupiers is that they are passionate about changing the world but have a very narrow focus of what they want to achive, and have given no thought to many practicalities.

For example they talk about scrapping our current form of government and putting in place their ideal, but have no idea how any transition might take place and what the chances of a different outcome would be.

A plane with 10 passengers on board plunged through a safety rail and off the end of Pauanui Airstrip’s runway yesterday.

The Great Barrier Airlines plane failed to get off the ground and ended up nose-down in a garden about a metre short of a public walkway.

There are no reports of injuries.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has launched an investigation.

Any doubt about occupy not being a political play has been dispelled by Matt McCarten:

Two months ago, 20 ordinary New Yorkers said “enough”. They set up an occupation camp and called themselves “Occupy Wall Street”, protesting against corporate greed and inequality.

The media ignored it. But it grew and grew. A fortnight ago, the trade unions joined in and the Occupy movement exploded across North America. Last weekend, thanks to the internet, it went global.

Last Saturday, a core group of 200 Aucklanders set up an Occupy camp in Auckland’s Aotea Square. They intend to stay there around the clock until Election Day.

If you are in Queen St, pop over to the camp and see the new global form of democratic action, where ordinary citizens are standing up for themselves rather than waiting for someone else to tell them what to do and think. It’s the future.

So is Occupy NZ the Mana Party of Unite? Is there any difference?

they want to overthrow everything but as you say they a bit vague on what will replace the present day structures..One youngish 30 ish leader I met , was really the scary one..He has an attractive personality and is articulate and in my estimate, is capable of anything. It is this ”capable of anything ” bit that is the worry. Young people are led into this group as they are into many groups , through curiosity. As per usual , they are also fed and made very welcome..The need and wish to belong means the young are the most likely to really stick with it. The grp in CHCH has a library of literature and films. If people were familiar with all this material , they would not regard this movement so benignly ; nor would they be so inclined to write them off as hippies or jokes. Indeed , the material is serious cause for alarm. Whilst it remains ”material” no worries , but all it would take for a grp of young people to emulate some of the ideas , would be a charismatic leader like the one I refer to , finally deciding that his time has come. Blowing up trains springs to mind.
How I originally came in contact with these people was thru attending a movie they advertised at a community centre..They did not front up about who they were..it took some time to find that out..So a core group could be advertising movies in the ODT. Every group has its own recruitment methods..If you want to delve deeper , google Spanish anarchism and anarchy in general.

In 2008, the media gave Obama a free pass, and most (with the exception of folks like Jake Tapper) are doing it again with regard to the ~~non~~ reporting of the Solyndra scandal (the so-called “Green Energy” company that blew more than half-a-billion of US tax dollars in less than two years) and Fast and Furious ( the gun running operation to Mexico that was approved and perpetuated by the Obama administration and has led to at least two deaths of U.S. enforcement agents).
