Labour on the PM’s radio show
October 5th, 2011 at 4:30 pm by David FarrarLabour is spending another day talking about the PM’s radio show, rather than oh you know say the credit downgrade. Yes I know they are talking about that also but if you talk about two issues in a day, then your chances of the media highlighting the one you want is diminished.
But anyway as they are still going on about it, has anyone else been amused by Labour’s position on the show. Their position is this:
- The show is an illegal election broadcast which should be prosecuted under the Broadcasting Act
- Radioworks should offer an identical one hour show to Phil Goff
- Phil Goff would accept the show if it was offered
You don’t need to be a member of MENSA to work out the flaw in their arguments.
For what it is worth, I think Radioworks should offer Goff an hour show also. Sure it will rate as well as a one hour discussion on agalmatophilia, but the revenue loss is probably less than the lawyer’s fees.

What people should be taking away from this is Labour are prepared to tell a broadcaster what they can and can’t do.

To be consistent Goff should be for all party leaders breaking the law, or none.
A very popular PM has all sorts of advantages over other parties, especially the smaller parties. It’s mindlessly impossible to try and achieve “fair balance” in coverage.

So to be clear, their position is that Phil Goff is prepared to do a one hour illegal broadcast?
cool.

Well, I can only imagine the outrage if this was 2008 and it was Helen Clark with a free hour on radio after her government has lent the station owner $30-40 million

Oh yes, but today we DO see John Key’s true colours don’t we?

John Key yells out “Shame on Labour” when a guy tries kill himself. What a sad little boy out PM is. Hes asking for it.

Hi Mike,
Can you tell me if Labour would let TV3 lose it’s broadcast license because it couldn’t pay fees, putting hundreds if not thousands of people out of work? Otherwise, piss off.

@thepolecat – I watched the footage on Stuff (http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/5738033/Man-tries-to-jump-at-parliament) but didn’t hear Key yelling out anything. It was remarkable that I heard many Labour MP’s yelling out ‘scumbag’ though. As I guess did everyone else who reads Stuff.

The credit downgrade was damaging especially when they said it would not happen and if it did mortgage rates would go through the roof and then said when it happened that mortgage rates would NOT rise. None of this is pretty. It was always on the cards we would suffer a downgrade especially when the US lost their AAA rating. And mortgage rates MUST go up as funding gets more expensive. How much – who knows. But all this has been lost in this silly radioworks issue. If I were John Key I would keep stirring the pot on this, and meanwhile the focus shifts to another rugby match.

thepolecat – there could be more to this than first meets the eye of the opposition in a state of alarm, I’d rather wait and try see what actually took place before making assertions.

Mate watch the video and put your ear very close to your speakers. Why do you think Key sits their like he just scratched his daddy’s new car? Its like he knows he just messed up.
Vote:October 5th, 2011 at 5:06 pm
Had another listen, King really goes to town with the ‘scumbag’ comment, and a few more Labour MP’s provide some backing vocals for her. What are you watching?

I’m confused – I thought Phil Goff was offered the same spot as JK but he declined it before it occurred. Can anyone correct me on this? I am so sure I remember reading about 3/4 days before hand in the news how Phil Goff had declined an appearance with JK on the RadioLive show.

Waiting for ‘agalmatophilia’ shoot up on Google Trends. Well, ‘Google Trends NZ’ anyway.
Vote:October 5th, 2011 at 5:25 pm
@RightNow. Both the TV3 clip and Stuff clips have been trimmed down from the original video they posted. Annette King could be heard saying “What? What? What?” very loudly in the original videos following Keys comments.

@ Right Now; read Steve Chadwick’s lips; if I’m not wrong, the word she uses is “gutless”. The barracking was coming from both sides of the House, but Ross Robertson, to his credit, singled out the Opposition for the barracking.

Radio Works would have to have rocks in their head to even contemplate offering Goff an hour of editorial content (free from any mention of politics or the election).
For starters, who would want to call in? Trevor from Wainuiomata? Annette from Rongotai? Chris from Kabul? Philip – on parole from Mt Eden? Scott on release from Carrington? Not exactly a list of names from ‘Quiz Kids’….
And which advertiser would want to buy advertising time around Goff’s ‘slot’ – certainly not The Mad Butcher!
Besides, Radio Works would want to retain / grow its listener base and Goff is hardly going to do that either… in fact, any ratings comparison between a ‘Goff slot’ and the PM’s effort, would be a hoot!

Vote:The government has not lent the company $30-$40 mill. It has allowed the company to pay off the licence fees over a period as is specifically contemplated the the legislation. Part of that deal involves getting interest at a rate that could not be achieved elsewhere.

polecat.
I have seen the footage. Could you give a time reference for Key’s shouting, because as far as I can tell, he did no such thing.

This is why the PM needs his security, the left is already trying to turn this around, making Goff out to be a
Vote:victim of Key’s words. He’s hoping this incident will not be repeated.
October 5th, 2011 at 5:52 pm
God that is hilarious. I thought to myself earlier in the day: complaining about Key’s appearance like this presumably prevents Labour doing the same thing if the opportunity comes up.
Except they want to do the same thing if the opportunity comes up.
Labour should just come out and declare they are deciding everything by Magic 8 Ball.

That was the explanation Key has offered according to Radio Pinko – it was a comment directed at the DPS bullshit Liabore have been slinging about.

@ Ben; the way that Labour has performed in the last few weeks, I think that they’re deciding everything by magic mushrooms!

I just watched the jumper video.
You know what? When Goff finally gets to speak again, he lowers his voice, looks at the PM, speaks slowly and naturally, and with some dignity tells Key he’s not impressed by his response.
First time in a long time I’ve been impressed, even for a moment, by Phil Goff. I’m sure it will pass. If only Phil Goff could speak from the heart and with a bit of dignity more often like he did in that moment. Maybe it was just for that one moment that there was no bullshit.

Well, this is one of the first times this year I have agreed with Labour.

I’ve listened to the TVNZ version several times now and all I can hear is the “what?? what??” followed by “you scumbag!” etc.

Oh.. LOL!! Indeed.
Actually there’s no comparison, one is definitely more interesting than the other & it ain’t Phil G.

DPF – you should’ve tagged this post with ‘agalmatophilia’.

MP Lousia Wall was on The Cup last night. No doubt Phill Goff will be demanding a National MP is on tonight.

Isn’t there a point number 4? The one where Labour “borrows” the advertising format of Radio Live for use on their own boards? Same colours, font, layout, and everything.
Vote:October 6th, 2011 at 6:39 am
Yep, valid comments DPF. It reminds me of when they sent Williams to Australia with a full support team to trawl through documents to find anything incriminating about key. Here we were, about to face a VERY nasty recession and rather than knuckle down to help sort it out, their only interest was wasting time trying to find anything bad about key.
Pathetic. Unfortunately this little reaction shows once again they have not learnt anything.

I suggest Goff ought be on the radio every evening to assist with overcoming insomnia.
Vote:October 6th, 2011 at 9:40 am
An hour of Goff on the radio would see queues at the bannister.
Vote:October 6th, 2011 at 11:26 am
If they offered Phil Goff the chance to host also it would not be breaching the law. What makes it an election advertisement is that only one side was presented. Where media shows a balanced view with multiple opinions allowed to be aired then it is not an election advertisement.
