Vote for an alternative to Wellywood
October 31st, 2011 at 1:00 pm by David FarrarYou can vote at the Dom Post for one of five alternatives to Wellywood. The top two options will then go into a run-off ballot against Wellywood. That final ballot should be a ranked one, otherwise it may be seen as an attempt to have Wellywood win by splitting the vote.
My order of preference is:
- Te Capital
- Wellington’s lost umbrellas
- Wellington (blown away)
- Taniwha
- Eye of Taniwha Whataitai
- Wellywood
Make sure you vote and have you say. We all have to live with the winning option.

If they’re going to persist and go forward with it, why not regularly rotate it for different events? Sevens, Hobbit premier, Wearable Arts etc.

Why _anything_? Why is a sign needed _at all_? What is wrong with a nice bit of green hillside? Lord knows there is little enough green space around our cities as it is. Why must every empty space be filled with something artificial?

I don’t mind the “blown Wellington” sign, but “Te Capital” is horrible, the umbrellas are cute, but I’d wonder what the point was, and the Maori symbols are just too much, especially the taniwha.
If people don’t vote, then those who like the signs will win. I’m just voting for the Wellington sign.

If thats not an option then either Wellington blowing away, or the umbrellas – at least it’s a bit of humour.
I agree DPF, that having the top 2 go through could be seen as a cynical attempt to split the non-wellywood vote. I hope you (and I) are wrong. (I completely disagree with you on ‘Te Capital’ though – Blegh.)

The Taniwha might be a little dangerous and potentially rather expensive-I’d imagine making a sign of him will anger him somewhat and we all know that Taniwha can only ‘appeased’ by the opening of cheque books….

Sorry DPF, but my view is almost exactly the inverse. I think Te Capital is a horrible pastiche, and it is insulting to Maori and te reo – which is a beautiful sounding language. Worse than Wellywood.
Vote:And why on Earth would we want a sign that highlights something BAD about Wellington. For that reason the umbrellas and Wellington blown away are just really really bad choices.
I like the Taniwhas though. They are quintisenntially Kiwi, and I love the idea of a dynamic sign. So my choice is:

2. Taniwha
3. Wellington (blown away)
4. Wellington’s lost umbrellas
5. Wellywood
6. Te Capital

I’m with s.russell – I think Eye is actually quite cool and really grabs me. I’m not a fan of the two wind based ones. I know it’s a windy place but move on people.
I’m not one of those so against Wellywood that I would want to burn it down but I’d certainly support sabotage if we ended up with Te Capital.

Here’s an interpretation of the alternatives:
1) A really dumb suggestion
2) An even worse suggestion
3) A silly suggestion
4) An inane suggestion
5) A suggestion made up by a small dog
6) Something copied off the back of a cornflakes packet
And the two winners go up against……Wellywood. I wonder who will win. Reminiscent of the General Election.

I kinda like the two wind ones because they fit in with the “wind sculpture” theme that is along cobham drive
- the knitting needle, the 2 vawt and hawt windmill sculptures and the singing bamboo stands.
Perhaps they should make the signs move. Maybe the umbrellas turning over in the wind.

If we have to have a sign, then just a simple Wellington, no crap motifs or silly paint jobs, or invisible 3D
Oh and BTW if these were the best of creative input we should be very, very worried

Nothing – because Wellington’s green hills are part of its charm.
Or what labrator said, make it changeable to suit events, and in between them sublet to the brain behind the Tui billboards and have some humorous or pointed commentary for the people flying in. As Wellington is a political / public service city that’d be appropriate.

I have long admired how well Wellington has done their waterfront and central city, unlike Auckland whose planners have been out to lunch for decades. But this crap is puerile drivel! It is not worth a blog post and it is definitely not worth any council time! Jeez!
