I would be interested to see the underlying concept explained with words – just to see how true it was.

If it just mean you can punish individual politicians, for example, it’s a lot truer if you use FPP. Or STV.

Me, I want to vote for parties too.

I’m all for STV too, but the way the referendum is set up, and the lack of understanding on the part of the great unwashed, means that a vote for anything other than MMP would be likely to increase the chances of getting FPP.

I’m not sure why you’d be against MMP but for SM when SM is essentially just 50% FPP and 50% MMP. At least own up to wanting the old, broken system back.

I’ll be voting to keep MMP, not because it’s my ideal system, but because it is the closest of the options available, and the reform has the possibility of lowering the threshold and requiring parties to hold votes for their party lists, which would both make the system much better.

I don’t get the people saying that SM would stop small parties holding the balance of power. It doesn’t prevent that – it makes it statistically less likely to occur because the small parties will be smaller. But arguably that is even less just – would people be less frustrated with the electoral system if Winston held the country to ransom with 2 seats instead of 8 for example?

This referendum isn’t a real choice because it pits MMP against 4 systems all of which are less proportional.

If we had the option to ditch MMP for a list proportional system with no electorate seats at all then we’d have a really interesting debate on our hands.

For a long time I didn’t get why this was not an option on the ballot. Then I realised that the degree to which a system includes electorates also determines the number of Maori electorates. MMP has the least Maori electorate seats of all the options and a proper proportional system would have no Maori electorates at all. That’s not something that would be in Labour’s interest and JK couldn’t afford to put through an option like that given his relationship with the Maori Party…

So instead we have this joke of a referendum between MMP and 4 FPP lookalikes – what a waste of time and money.
