I heard an “economics commentator” on the radio (didn’t hear who), telling people that they were fools not to sign up to Kiwisaver because “it was free money”. I wanted to punch the radio.

Unfortunately the ones getting the coins have paid very few notes in over the years…

I don’t think that picture is quite accurate. It’s true for some. It’s true for the very rich. The government takes a lot and gives back relatively less. Maybe because they’re rich and don’t need it. On the other hand the picture should be the reverse for the poor since they tend to pay less and receive more. Maybe because they need it more.
But the cartoon is not just about the redistribution of wealth, indeed it’s hardly about that at all. The point of that cartoon is to say the government wastes money. That little value is created for your tax dollar. But is it true?
The United States, for instance, spends three times as much as we do on health care. Are they three times as healthy? Maybe the government does some things okay.

“the US, for instance, spends three times as much as we do on health care.”
That, Weihana, is because the Big Pharma over there are screwing the population, and Government is powerless to stop it.
Vote:But watch out. I am sure you are aware they are trying to take over Pharmac, with the consequent increase in drug use and cost in this country. Its all about “profit”. Why else would the Big Pharma successfully ‘hide’ cures and cheaper remedies to major illnesses like cancer and heart disease?
