Unfortunately for him, Goff is not the bullshitter Helen Clark was. She would have been able to lie or weasel her way around it. She would have done her little contemptuous chuckle and said, “awww look [insert bullshit]” followed by some personal attack.

The poor bugger Goff is hopeless. Professional trougher all his life, one who never had a decent job.

Their economic policy does not have any coherence to it. They seem to have done it bit by bit without considering its overall effect. Now they go on about borrowing for tax cuts. Well hello they are borrowing for tax cuts. National is NOT promising ANY tax cuts.

That is also the precise moment where a lot of young voters turned off Key in droves and any semblance of mana he had as Prime Minister vanished into the ether.

But something about him just doesn’t sit right. He comes across, especially in that Press leader’s debate, as smug and smarmy. Show me the money? Gross. Tom Cruise’s version was greasy enough. Key’s repeated, “that’s cool, that’s cool” also failed to get me on board. Even I could see that actually, that was not cool.

I’m more interested in the video (shows as a related video after this one has shown) on dividends from power companies. Why on earth no one is bringing up (including National) the fact that Labor said multiple times in 2009 that they would forgo all dividends from the power companies to keep prices down. Now the dividends form part of their entire fiscal framework. He called Key a liar for raising GST. Why on earth has Key not raised this is a debate? Imagine seeing Goff fumble his way through the answer as to why he has completely reversed his position.

Nonsense. All he did was hold Goff’s feet to the fire over his spending promises, and did so in a way calculated to make headlines. It was brilliant.

John Key has not lost any “mana” by doing his job. Goff on the other hand has, by lying, when he called Key a liar.

Can you give us some poll figures for your claim about young people?

    I’m sorry Lee but…

If you think acting like a snake oil salesman employing cheap carnival tricks at the town hall fair to impress the hicks with your salesmanship at the expense of what it is you’re actually selling is brilliant ?…then i really do despair for you.

I can understand how the Whale wants to keep this issue afloat and keep putting it in the public eye. Because it distracts from the piss poor policies Key’s touting, thats when he even bothers to tout them, but for the most part, people they have moved on and are now expecting real solutions to serious problems facing NZ not more comedy routines from ringmaster John.

Key is going to have to work extra hard to restore some mana and dignity to the office and title he holds because his job isn’t to crack pithy oneline quotes from shitty movies or to constantly LIE to the NZ public.

He’s such an embarassment and a perfect example of everything that’s wrong with this celebrity obsessed, instantly gratified consumer culture we live in. If he spent a bit more time doing his job properly rather than seeking photo ops and batting away problems with inane quips i’d cut him a bit more slack…maybe.

Black with a Vengeance (426) says ‘constantly LIE to the NZ public’. Well see my previous post. How do you explain Goff’s complete U turn on dividends? He was going to forgo them to save money for the poor. What now the poor have so much money he can once again pillage them for all they are worth and they will happily pay more for power? Goff got himself into this mess by being completely underprepared. He wants to be in charge of NZ yet he can’t even have costings 3 weeks before an election? No wonder JK is cracking jokes at Labor’s expense, the Labor party are just one big joke!

Except he did not act in the way your claiming. He held Goff’s feet to the fire. Your take on his performance is a fantasy in your own mind.

    He’s such an embarassment

I don’t think so, and nor do the vast majority of Kiwis.

If he spent a bit more time doing his job properly rather than seeking photo ops and batting away problems with inane quips i’d cut him a bit more slack…maybe.

No, you wouldn’t. You would find some other inane way to attack him. And Key IS doing his job, rather well.

Tell the truth. You don’t like Nationals policies, but for some reason you cannot debate them, so you attack Key personally.

That says more about you than him.

Judging solely by his record in gov’t, mannerisms, public behaviour…etc, he come across as extremely untrustworthy and desperate to be liked to the point of a psychopathic need. Theres no jealousy involved. Heh…I’m not going mad wanting to be him or even like him.

Tell me you were endeared by Key’s premature handshakeulation in trying to jump the gun ahead of the IRB boss with Richie McCaw.

or how proud you were when he minced down the runway like an old school tranny

or how charming his throat slitting gesture in parliament was

or how he awaits approval and applause for his vaudeville theatrics before launching into another cheap carnival cry in this latest gaffe

That might be how you want your prime minister to act but not mine. I expect a certain dignity and respectful statesmanship, none of which i’ve seen Key exhibit yet.

Some people are born with mana and some aren’t. I guess he missed out…bummer for him, bummer for us.

So you have forgotten John Key at Pike River and in Christchurch – comforting and supporting, speaking with dignity and sincerity at memorial services, encouraging the rescue workers, sitting with grieving families and sharing their sorrow.
I remember how proud I was that we had a leader who could guide us through such dark days with such compassion.
Funny that you and Robyn Malcolm can only see the media moments and not the real, solid, daily job of leadership.

As opposed to Goff wearing leather and riding a motercycle to try and convince us he’s butch?

    I though it was funny.

I expect a certain dignity and respectful statesmanship

You think Goff has that? Puhleeease.

I expect a leader to cut taxes and get the government out of my life. Beyond that, I don’t really care.

The fact is that all politicians behave in silly ways sometimes, and Goff is no different.

Again, I say your attacking him because you cannot debate the policy. Its bullshit wrapped up in faux outrage to hide your intellectual inability to engage in serious debate.

…making promises he had no intention of keeping. No, I haven’t forgotten. Thanks for reminding me.

Tell me you were endeared by Key’s premature handshakeulation in trying to jump the gun ahead of the IRB boss with Richie McCaw.

    Who cares?

i care. He was representing us as leader in front of the world and he couldn’t even wait his turn to get a handshake in. What a chump.

From my understanding Goffs been riding Motorbikes for years. Leathers a part and parcel of that.

I suppose next Key will be grabbing his nuts at the next debate and telling Goff to ‘suck em’, much to your delight. Actually even i’d laugh at that but still…

i expect a gov’t leader to do whats best for the greater good of society as a whole over the longer term. Key’s policies don’t do that. Ive argued why as it relates to asset sales yesterday.

Thats okay BWAV, he could always bribe them with the promise of free stuff.

oh you mean like promising to build schools for the kiddies from the sale of state assets ?

    and why is that ?

It’s because he has nothing in his bag. When it comes down to it all he has
is purile name calling and childish insults. There really is no one home there at all.
He hates John Key and thats all there is to him. Quite pathetic actually.

Poor fellow has been carved up and buried on the general debate today.

Every leader has their flaws, unfortunately for Goff he looks like he is suffering from an overdose of them. Mana is such an overused word and not always appropriate to use when applying to elected officials. Some are born with mana, but most people earn it for the magnificent deeds they perform. If I was going to apply the mana scale to our current crop of political leaders then I think it is fair to say that Key is on top, Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia probably have more than Goff but their rating has probably diminished while they have been part of the Govt. Norman and Turei are still on the learners licence and may achieve greater mana in the future. The extent of Hone’s mana depends on where you sit on the political spectrum, but in my mind it is lowish, due to his continual blunders and profanities – such as the white mofo comments, trips to Paris and Northern Territory and forgetting to vote. Winston Peters, mana rating is for most people (other than Grey Power) at rock bottom after his antics in the 2005-2008 Government, wearing the baubles of office and saying No when everyone else said Yes. Don Brash, had more mana when he was Reserve Bank Governor, but will be consigned to history as another abberation on the political scene. Peter Dunne’s mana is well and truly exhausted by his constant desire for the baubles of office and his continued dependence on National for his seat in Parliament.

It’s particularly weird because the usual problem with professional politicians is that they can endlessly quote this sort of detailed stuff (however fanciful.) And that’s all they can do. They’re completely unable to articulate a single economic principle which should inform their position.
