New Zealand’s student loan scheme is under the same pressure.

This from last year….
Nearly 900,000 people have taken student loans since the scheme started, and more than two-thirds have not fully repaid the money back.
A Ministry of Education report says only $6.4 billion of the $13.9 billion borrowed since students started getting loans in 1992 has been paid back.

“Student loans, if they are to continue, should be made dischargeable in bankruptcy after five years — but with the school that received the money on the hook for all or part of the unpaid balance.
Up until now, the loan guarantees have meant that colleges, like the writers of subprime mortgages a few years ago, got their money up front, with any problems in payment falling on someone else.
Make defaults expensive to colleges, and they’ll become much more careful about how much they lend and what kinds of programs they offer.”

Good idea in principle, but would you trust NZ’s tertiary institutions to exercise any sensible restraint in that regard?

The likely outcome (a bleat to gummint for mo money when they fucked up) would perhaps provide a better opportunity to actually impose restraint. Buy the assets (in a PPP 🙂 )when they go bust and hire lecturers who actually can teach and teach something useful. The rest of them can go down and play with the smelly hippies.

Some hackers (including “Anonymous”) have joined together to launch an attack on banks in response to recent crackdowns against the Occupy protest movement. OpRobinHood will use stolen credit details to donate to charities and others, supposedly at the expense of banks.

Except Rob Rachwald, director of security strategy at database security firm Imperva, explains that ultimately banking customers and not the banks themselves bear the cost of credit card fraud – not directly, but through increased fees. Anonymous is mistaken if it thinks that charitable donations using stolen credit cards offer any exception to this rule, he argued.

“From a consumer standpoint, there’s no liability for a stolen card … The fraudulent transaction is not charged back to the consumer. The problem is that this misleads consumers – and Anonymous – into thinking that consumers are spared while banks and retailers are screwed. Wrong.”

“The reality is retailers who accepted the stolen credit card (not knowing it was stolen) lose price of the merchandise purchased. Credit card companies increase fees and interest rates. Fraud costs, in effect, are distributed back to the general pool of consumers.”

“So it is members of the majority, not the banks, who are ultimately going to be left out of pocket by OpRobinHood.”

My wife and I made the mistake of looking at it once – and we dead heated in our dive for the remote to change to Discovery – at the time, I think they were showing a programme about the life cycle of a skink and we agreed it was a better option all round.

Malcolm is just a second rate wannabe who somehow thinks that, because she has appeared on TV, she should have some special status.

Pay the batsmen by the run. Forget getting a $150,000 retainer and $7,300 a test match. They get a $50,000 base salary and $100 a run. $1,000 bonus for a 50. $2,000 bonus for a century.

Then let’s see how careful they become with their shot selection.

He is not only using a ‘re-distributive’ rating scheme but also spending millions on vote buying schemes and projects for Len’s voter base.

NZ Cricket will never produce a viable test team; we don’t have players (numbers), the pitches (mostly indifferent where batting is a lottery and sticking around is a gamble), or the patience for 5 day play. Better that we should give up 5 day tests, take the Indian funding (around 2 mill. a year at last count) and develop top short game players (20, 40, 50 over). Treat it like sevens, and specialize. That way we can participate at top level in the money competitions and attract new exciting players to the game.

Was in town yesterday and wandered past the ‘Occupy Wellington’ site; does anyone realise there are only about a dozen people there? most of them are the usual bearded, no hoper, drop out types

I have always thought their big mistake was suggesting they represented 99% of the population as middle New Zealand would look at these clowns and not exactly see themselves; middle New Zealand raise their children to be productive and respectful, not drop outs wearing scruffy clothing and not bathing.

Apparently so, if Robyn Malcolm, Keshia Castle-Hughes and Lucy Lawless are anything to go by. Remember when Castle-Hughes and Lawless were all into the climate change thing a couple of years ago? They were quite adamant that John Key should do what they told him. And John Key responded by telling Keisha to stick to acting 🙂

And Lucy Lawless tried to present John Key with an air ticket to attend an international climate change meeting in Copenhagen (because if you believe in climate change, it just makes sense to fly a round trip of about 34000 kilometres in an airplane to express concern about climate change caused by engine emissions …). That nasty Mr Key refused! How dare he?!

Do people have any problems with Air NZ grabaseat availability?

I’m in the Tauranga area, and visit Christchurch occasionally.

But, Tauranga to Christchurch grabaseats always sell out very quickly, sometimes in seconds.

I phoned Air NZ to query this one time–several times I trying getting seats less than a second after they became available but still missed out. They said , too bad.
Eg, today, the only sold out grabaseat is Tauranga Christchurch.

Same happened in the weekend.

I reckon Air NZ muset make a killing on the tauranga->christchurch route.

wreck – no doubt. there is no competition on those regional routes.

I remember getting fucked over flying out of nelson once. i missed a flight (plane was hadnt even started its taxi) and they charged me 3 hundy to get back to auckland. couldnt say “fuck ya ill take jetstar”.

i did punish them though. i flew 50 clients to auckland over the following two months and didnt use air nz once.

it made me feel better.

I’m continually annoyed by Air New Zealand. The main trunk line is well serviced with plenty of specials. The provinces mean while suffer. As a Southlander living in Auckland I want to go home to see my mother. The Auckland to Invercargill (and return) route is never ever offered as a special. I contacted Air New Zealand to ask why. Their reply was that specials such as Grab A Seat are only offered on direct routes. So for this route you have to fly from Auckland to Christchurch, change plans and then from Christchurch to Invercargill. You could fiddle around with dates and try and get some special deals with Grab A Seat specials from on those separate routes, but it’s hardly worth it. I don’t expect the Auckland to Invercargill route to become a daily affair, but they could put on a plane at least once a week. Air New Zealand have planes which can cover the distance.

For their new offers of lower prices for seats for carry on luggage only, I entered some dates for May for travel to various South Island destinations straight after the news was announced. Same old story of no seats available on the dates I selected. I doubt a plane could fill so quickly for Tuesday flights.

When my brother and I had to travel to Invercargill urgently after the sudden death of my father. We paid over $500 each for airfares. As we were travelling because of a death in the family, we were entitled to a small refund. That came to a total of $120.

Air New Zealand, great if you travel main trunkline. Everywhere else you pay through the nose. I’d love to corner Rob Fyfe in a lift and give him some feedback.

I love how people complain about prices. All you guys baggin Air NZ are clowns. How much do you expect them to charge if they are the only company that does these backwater routes?

Let’s tell companies how much to charge us cause thats how buisness works? Those dirty fat cats, providing us goods and services that we would not otherwise have in exchange for money. Dirty bastards. I shoudl be able to pay what I want! Not what the market dictates.

Heh, I see beryl has joined in with the other buzzards. Funnily enough, I owned an old Skoda my last year in high school. When that died, I bought an old Fiat 850 for uni. When I crashed that, my sister gave me her rusty viva.

What beryl and other troglodytes don’t seem to have noticed, is that Skoda/VW make a very decent automobile these days.

Point is, if you lightened up a bit on the name calling and holier than thou attitude you wouldn’t put peoples

Must confess that I was recently slumming over at the Standard and felt sick after reading the posts.. What a filthy site… It’s hard to believe that such evil mutants are free to roam throughout this fair country.

They are all in complete denial and self destrcting over their choice of new leader but I guess that is good for the free thinking right.

The parents were throwing wild parties and had invited all the local shepherds round (not a suitable environment for a baby).
During our inspection, three mature gentlemen approached the parents with very expensive gifts – we are concerned about their motives, several paedophile rings operate in this area.

I note that the Green party staff member who was sacked for vandalising National party signs has unsurprisingly been given her job back now that the election is over.

All that faux outrage from Wussell was really not needed, far better for Wuss to have come out and told the truth.

Both Norman and the female co-leader knew all about the vandalism from day one and they both endorsed it.

Just another example of Green party lies.

In fact I’m hoping i-predict will announce a $50k IPO on it for I’d buy the whole lot I’m that fucking confident.
