It seems that the work dodgers employed by the POA have appealed for support from their international brethren. The ITF are threatening to declare POA a “port of convenience”. They say:

Criminologist Greg Newbold said the reason for the difference in the numbers of male and female recidivist drivers was simple.

Female view –
Psychologist Sara Chatwin said that men tend to drink more than women and therefore found it harder to stop drinking even if they had been prosecuted.

Police were using various measures to target recidivist offenders, including keeping a list of their vehicles and keeping an eye out for them.

When are men going to start complaining? Could you complain to the BSA? If these ads were about women , the Human Rights Commission would have been brought in. Like you , I am totally sick of them. I think they are disgusting..They make young men out to be idiots and encourage the ridicule of young men. We are at the stage where we have quite a lot of young men around us..they are polite , interesting , intelligent , enterprising and adventurous. They should not be being portrayed as idiots and they should not be being turned into objects of ridicule. I feel this is some kind of hangover from the Clark days.

On the same note as Longknives, what ever happened to “Wannabuyaflower” who used to sit outside the lost and lamented pub on the corner opposite the Civic in Auckland?

Used to enjoy walking past him as he read his porn magazine leering at the girls. And then upstairs for a decent pint and some great music. Father of a really hot girl I went to school with played cornet in the regular group that played there.

I believe that the 911 attacks were orchestrated and carried out by the same terrorist organisation that claimed responsibility for them.
I believe that the Moon landings were real and actually happened and were a direct result of the desperate and highly funded ‘space race’ between USSR and USA in the 1960s.
I believe the King of Rock N Roll Elvis Presley died of Heart Failure in 1977 and that subsequent sightings of him working in a meatworks in the Lower North Island are inaccurate.
I even believe that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour in 1941 and caught America by surprise…

I don’t believe America is the ‘bad guy’ you like to think it is, In fact I’ve travelled through it and the place and its people are quite lovely for an ‘Evil Empire’. I havn’t travelled to Iraq yet so will have to take your word for it…
Oh and when travelling I don’t jump up and down about ‘Human Rights’ when being searched at an Airport, I’m not carrying anything illegal or dangerous so really have nothing to hide. So why care?

Four people, including two New Zealand residents, allegedly running the world’s largest file-sharing site Megaupload.com, have been arrested in Auckland today for allegedly violating piracy laws.

United States prosecutors in Virginia have shut down the site and charged its founder, six others and two corporations with running an international organised criminal enterprise, allegedly responsible for massive worldwide online piracy.

Not sure what to make of this. If it is their contention that the websites didn’t take enough action to take down infringing content I’m not sure this alone would amount to an “organized criminal enterprise”. There is certainly difficulties with any website that offers user generated content or which provides a storage service. Youtube contains plenty of infringing material notwithstanding that they make considerable effort to remove it when they can. But on the face of it, and without any further information or evidence to explain these alleged criminal activities, a prosecution of this sort could potentially threaten the development of these types of online services if the prosecution is based solely on the difficulty of monitoring user generated content and removing illegal material.

Hopefully the US authorities have more than just “there’s file sharing going on”.

Christchurch isn’t all bad it had ( and I was speaking with them the other day and I believe they will be retailing again soon )one of the best second hand book stores in the country , Smiths in Manchester Street, brilliant knowledgable staff.

But having worked there for several months a year between 2004 and 2011 I can say with experience that it is the most xenophobic racist place in New Zealand and I’m happy to argue with anyone over that. Its a sad sad town, where else would clowns like Chapman and co be allowed to exist?

They are now trying to “fix” it without realizing that you cannot fix the “problem” of file sharing through legislation and law enforcement just as you cannot stop people from recording movies on a VHS recorder or making mixtapes from the radio and sharing it with their friends. Technology has changed and it is now very easy to share material online with little risk.

The only solution Big Media are interested in is one which involves censoring and filtering the internet, a solution that still will not stop people from file sharing. The solution that politicians should impose on them is more online access to content at a reasonable price. That’s if any solution is needed at all. For all the claims of harm to the industry there is precious little evidence of it from over a decade of rampant file sharing. Movies are still made, music videos are still made, computer programs are still made. If file sharing really was the threat they claim then investment would have dried up by now for lack of ability to make a profit.

So Gareth Morgan has sold GMI to Kiwiblog. Well – that was always in the strategy I suppose.
But it doesn’t suit me. I am not having my Kiwisaver provider owned by a bank and the investments made into the bank products to suit the bank. No independence there.
So my Kiwisaver money is off elsewhere asap. Probably Carmel Fisher.

I’m not habitually anti-American, but sometimes…I really hate the bullying bastards. Could you imagine a US citizen being extradited to Europe or here?

I am fairly pro-USA but it did annoy me a while back when the USof A tried to maintain that they ‘owned’ space.
They don’t even have a bloody vehicle capable of carrying humans into space at the moment.

Sorry guys but if this is the worst thing you’ve ever seen the US do then you haven’t been paying much attention for the last thirty or so years. And I’m not anti-US either. It’s just the more US politics proceeds down the road its been on since ~~Reagan~~ Bush 41 assumed the Presidency, the worse it becomes, and now its at the point where just like Israel, it’s leaders are acting in direct opposition to the best interests of its own people. It amazes me some people can’t see that even now, after almost thirty years of it.

@Weihana – Megaupload was renowned for hosting copyrighted material. It was definitely one of the go to places for access to films – often of questionable quality but that’s beside the point. There was so much of it that it is pretty obvious the site owners knew what was going on and are probably complicit. However, I do question the fact that people are arrested in NZ for breaking a US law in what is basically a smoking gun set of evidence. Assets have been seized in NZ I understand and they now face extradition charges.

If I understand extradition processes correctly they’re worse than normal prosecution processes in that the burden of proof is less, the process tends to be somewhat lengthy and the restrictions on the ‘accused’ are worse than normal prosecution processes. They also end up defending themselves twice with associated hassle and costs. This is a fairly vague understanding I have and am willing to be corrected.

If what they do is illegal in NZ then prosecute them here otherwise sorry we should not be an arm of the US legal system.

Yes but that’s not allowed you see. All sorts of penalties apply if we don’t comply. Just wait till the US declares copyright violators as “terrorists” and therefore subject to the rendition and detention without trial provisions of the NDAA.

It seems a little odd that these guys a facing such extreme prison terms. I read on one US site that it could be as much as 50 years. In NZ we free people who murder in less than 5 – 10 years in many cases… heh.

The horse bolted years ago but don’t try telling that to the US federal government….The arrest of executives of file sharing site Megaupload here in NZ have given us a possible glimpse of what government control of the internet could be like.

The controversial SOPA (Stopping Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (PROTECT IP Act) legislation currently before US legislators may have claimed inadvertently, its first scalps. The proposed acts with its draconian provisions, along with the at-times bellicose rhetoric by Obama administration officials in support, seemed to be limping to a halt after the online protests by Wikipedia, Reddit, Google and other major players. But the arrest of the Megaupload exec’s have been worryingly coincidental in its timing, possibly breathing new life into the proposals or keeping subsequent efforts by authorities to crack down on copyright violations bubbling away.

The US Presidents administrations propensity for proposing legislation which would cut across the freedoms of ordinary citizens (not that the Megaupload people are overly ordinary, but you’ve gotta start somewhere! Nabbing a fair sized fish sends the message both up and down the line) seem curiously at odds with the American ideals of freedom and liberty for all…..

My first reaction to the news of the Megaupload officials arrests (as posted on Facebook) are below:

Comparisons to organised crime is just insane! I smell Megaupload being hung out to dry as a sacrificial scapegoat. The whole thing is a timely, or untimely depending on your POV, warning shot from the increasingly draconian US federal govt.

A free internet without big govt crackdowns should be a given in the west….we’re not communist China. Ah, but the obamanation is! NZ are tools again.

If an “artist” is idiotic enough to put up their copyrighted material without being behind proper safeguards/security, be prepared for someone (millions) to download it without permission…and good job too. Rest assured, someone will find a way….get at it geeks!!

Internet freedom is proving hard to reign in ay, US feds/Hollywood/US recording industry!

The ugly spectre of NZ being a lapdog for US authorities isn’t going to play out well here. Not that the yanks will care, as usual their domestic audience will be all that matters and I fully expect these guys to be raked over the coals whether they have done anything of consequence illegally or not….

The only solution Big Media are interested in is one which involves censoring and filtering the internet, a solution that still will not stop people from file sharing. The solution that politicians should impose on them is more online access to content at a reasonable price.

That’s never going to happen though Weihana and you should know why. Why? Because all the media companies are now vertically integrated – have a look at this ownership map:

The bailouts were a kick-back and he is not going to do anything that will compromise his money stream.

Yeah I know. I knew that soon after he took office. Came from nowhere. He’ll disappear to nowhere but only in another four years however, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him this year, unfortunately. Depends on the mood of the people. The powers behind the throne might need to ditch him but he won’t go without a fight. You watch. Race will be the issue. Starts with poverty, moves into race. Tough, bloody fight. Not their blood of course. Ours.

What surprises me however is that many of the people here I predict will cheer on the Republican candidate as the year progresses – whoever he is – as if he’ll do anything different and as if everything is normal in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I mean hasn’t anyone learned anything?

Writing on the wall people. Big letters. On fire. A hundred feet high. B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T

Key is: forget left-right. That’s bread and circus. The politicians don’t care. They never have. Think vested interest. Corporatocracy. The modern imperialism. Their takeover has succeeded. They own the media, they own the politicians and they own you and your family in terms of what they do to your child’s influences and education every single day of the week.
