Tintin movie

Went to see the Tintin movie last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The plot does deviate quite a bit from the book or books, but that didn’t matter to me. When it comes to Lord of the Rings or even Harry Potter I object to plot changes in film versions – but with Tintin it didn’t matter as it is really about the wonderful characters.

Tintin is the name of the lead, but as with the books not the real star. That is a toss up between Caption Haddock and Snowy.

They made good use of 3D, and had some great action sequences. The chase sequence with the bird (and the papers) was very well done. My favourite though was the swordfight with the cranes.

Snowy adds the same comic tough as in the books. His sandwich tug or war with the rat is good fun, but most of all I love how he intimidates the much larger guard dog into becoming his plaything.

If you are a Tintin fan, go see the movie.

Tintin and Asterix were the two series of books I grew up on the most. We had every book, and could read them often. Every kid should have them.

I just hope that one day someone can make just as good an Asterix movie. The ones to date have been pretty crap.

When did you stop being a kid? Asterix books were being released only a few years ago.

They need to take them out of the hands of the French, then somebody would make a decent movie.

LOTR and Harry Potter aren’t about the characters?

Agreed entirely. I saw it last night, and kept annoying my wife by pointing out the references to other books contained within the movie.

Is there any word on a sequel?

I grew up with Asterix and Tintin as well, and I agree the movies for the former were crap. The problem for me is that I can’t imagine a voice that would suit either of the two main characters. I think the stories of Asterix have aged as well as the Tintin ones either (despite the mild racism in the earlier examples of the latter).

I’ll be interested to see the Tintin movie. I always marvelled in the fact that a drunkard bum lived in a mansion with hired help no less! :)

Glad you enjoyed it David, There’s a few of your readers who worked long and hard on it.

[DPF: Cool. It's nice to see it listed as a joint US/NZ movie]
