According to Wellington close sources Grant Robertson is already employing his “Mates” (using the word loosly) so that once he rolls Shearer early next year he has sycophants in place.
Silent T should look outside Parliament, he is history, am sorry to say – new faces for Labour in the Parliamentary system.
Clark and Simpson left Robertson in charge.

DPF has got it about right if it is assumed that Shearer is not carefully building his management over the party and parliamentary wing. His UN work shows he is a team builder, smart money for a leader would be on establishing himself first, taking into account that he doesn’t seem the sort to want to put to sea in a leaky boat, or on a bridge with lieutenants fingering their knives behind his back.

In my opinion he seems weak and unable to get his point across. His interviews during the selection process were appalling. I know he will get better but he was so bad that I will be suprised if he can get up to the level required. Come the heat of an election campaign, I expect Key will be all over him. However National would be stupid to underestimate him as the public can sometimes vote unpredictably (i.e. Peters getting back in).

Generally he’s been right not to rush things but a political career is not something that can be carefully planned. Top leadership means being able to react quickly to unforseen circumstances, like ticket profiteering.

It’s much easier to set clear ground rules from the start than to teach old ducks not to repeat old tricks.
