The McCully e-mails on 3 News

February 21st, 2012 at 6:55 pm by David Farrar

3 News is fast becoming the place to go with secret or illegal material. The secret recordings in 2008, the secret taping in 2011 and now the McCully hacked e-mails.

The e-mails that appeared on 3 News appear pretty ho hum – in fact I’d argue will help McCully’s popularity.  They are about cost cutting, wasteful “crap” and how someone went to Noumea just to do a 12 minute presentation. I think most people will be glad we have a Minister wanting to reduce waste.

Personally I thought the Cactus Kate version of the e-mails was far better :-)

The emails Cactus had were probably a whole lot more accurate too.

3 news, desperation linked to financial difficulties resulting in gutter press behaviour?

These revelations deserve valid follow up. Noumea for a twelve minute presentation? if the author couldn’t cover the costs independently surely video conference calling would have sufficed?

And then there’s the $230,000 Pacific conference.

McCully doesn’t currently have any popularity at all. So I guess any publicity will help. Even if it is negative from most voters’ perspective.

    Wrong Toad.
The prospect of McCully slashing jobs as Phil Goff claims he will do, will have the electorate positively in a happy head spin. A whole bunch of toffy nosed rich pricks on junkets abroad getting their comeuppance for abusing the taxpayers dime.
I can’t stand McCully but have just developed a rational like for the man.

@ Toad – piss off, Watermelon.

McCully has enough popularity to win an electorate seat many times. How many electorate seats does your Watermelon Party have?

Not so. The National Party has enough popularity in McCully’s electorate for him to win it many times. If he has any doubts about that, he could always test it by running as an independent next time.

As to the emails, we can only conclude that McCully has so much dirt on National’s leadership that they can’t fire him – it’s the only plausible explanation.

A Russian group claims to be behind the hacking of Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully’s email account

” However, the email from the Comrades hacker was clear, saying “This will not be the last time you hear from us”.”

I can see a sort of twisted logic in stalking McCully due to the company he keeps

Ignoring the multiple TV3 ethical breaches here… What the hell was McCully doing using Xtra for Minister-level Ministry e-mails? That is just completely retarded. Has he not been briefed on his security responsibilities? Or was he briefed and he just chose to ignore them? Foreign Affairs deals with international trade and international security issues that are considered to be secret. If McCully is too dumb or too careless to safeguard those secrets then he is not fit to hold the job. If I were Key I’d have sacked him.

McCully was an idiot for conducting government business on his private internet account, even if the emails weren’t particularly sensitive, but I guess he won’t make that mistake again.

Another explanation is that the National party leadership aren’t composed of Labour/Green/Mana supporters who would dearly love to see National Ministers sacked.

Seriously, it was a misjudgement. Until we know he’s routed top secret communiques or something, that’s all it is.

I have ‘issues’ with Murray, but I am happy with his current performance and his omelet making (you have to break eggs). He is a valuable member of National’s team, even though he is like Boss the Galah in the Aussie ‘Beyond the Black Stump’ comic strips – every employees’ nightmare – Mr Hyde one minute and Mr Hyde the next.

Based on the many previous instances of MCully failing to notice a difference between Cabinet Minister and feudal lord, my money’s on the latter.

It’s more that it’s composed of people willing to overlook the many McCully fuckups over sucessive govts that prompts me to imagine he must have some serious shit on the Party. This is merely the latest demonstration of his arrogant incompetence.

In a series of e-mails he says some things of which he’s got no reason to be ashamed.

The Left jump all over – not very much, it turns out.

TV3 out themselves as ethically challenged.

Doesn’t sound like dimness, incompetence or a f@#$up to me.
