The current level of the average wage is about the same as it was in December 1972, yet the output of the economy per person has grown considerably over that time.

Who benefited from the increasing output of the economy if wage and salary earners didn’t? This is shown by the share that employees get of the income the economy generates – the “labour share”. In New Zealand, it fell by a quarter from 60 percent in the early 1980s to a low of 46 percent in 2002. By comparison, Australia’s labour share has been higher than New Zealand’s for most of that time. It has thrived with more of its income going to wage and salary earners. In fact New Zealand has one of the lowest labour shares in the OECD.”

CTV Building collapse

Hampton said the five women died as a result of “inept and inadequate or inappropriate” rescue efforts, and an independent inquiry was needed to ensure the mistakes were not repeated in future disasters.

Hampton may have been himself inept and inappropriate in his choice of words at this stage, but for a Royal Commission into the Christchurch earthquake to inquire the collapse of one part of a building and not another part 12 hours later is bizarre, or does the fact that the area Hampton refers to, because of its exclusion as being part of the earthquake and so outside the Commission’s terms of reference, indicate that he is right in suggesting it was man-made error.

The Terms indicate
We are not investigating:
• Any questions of liability
• The earthquake search and rescue effort
• Design, planning or options for rebuilding Christchurch city central business district

so exclusion of Hampton’s area of concern places it it in one or more of these areas?

It’s about promoting that if you act like an idiot, cause damage and make us all look bad, then this isn’t really your place in the world.

But praises most scarfies.

There is a real culture change happening here at Otago. Year on year, student offences have decreased. Students are increasingly dobbing in fellow students for what they themselves are beginning to view as unacceptable behaviour.

Your average scarfie is a law-abiding soul. It turns out that, nationally, the Southern Police District, which includes Dunedin, Otago Rural and Southland, has one of the lowest crime rates in our beloved Aotearoa. Better yet, of the three areas, Dunedin has the lowest total crime per head of population. And the lowest rate of public-order offences.

If you think about the context of 20,000 young people in one place, that tells one hell of a story about how law abiding we basically are.

So while a few idiots make the headlines most of what happens is good here – and can still be fun.

Any economists about?

I have a question on the mertis of taxing production(income) vs consumption(spending). Seems to me that the worlds strong or strengthning economices are those that produce stuff, and the ones that are weak or weakening are those that seem to be net consumers.

Now, if a government is supported by my spending, the more I spend the better the immediate GST tax take. However the quality of my spending, and collective the quality of the all private spending may not become apparent for years – ie some later electoral cycle.

My suspicion is that taxing consumption creates an incentive for the government of the day to promote consumption, any consumption irrespective of whether that consuption create value, or wastefully disipates value.

What am I missing here? Any takers?

And the sub-headline in New Zealand’s “journal of record”? “300 ordinary working families lose job security”…which when you read the article turns out to be a quote from Mr Parsloe…Once upon a time the Herald would have put that headline in quotes (there are still plenty of us out here who know what quotation marks mean) to make it clear it was someone else speaking, and not the paper…I used to think this “the MSM is dead as a news source ” stuff was hyperbole from Whale and others….it is becoming increasinly obvious it is in fact spot on…

Well, it is the unions who refused to reform work practices. The unions should have shown more foresight and they could have negotiated a better outcome for the workers than what has happened now.

Dime is a bit harsh, the ‘workers’ are not morons, it is the union representatives who are the morons.

Industrial action on Auckland’s waterfront is spreading to Christchurch with workers at the Lyttelton port planning to refuse to work on a container ship.

I wonder if these 300 non-workers are aware of their northern counterparts’ plight?

If its show of hands voting, none of them will have the guts – with considerable reason – to stand up to the bullies up the front and vote against the party line…all sorts of “accidents” can happen on a site like a port….

Lance: I remember someone telling me that a rubber workers union official said – in response to a claim from the evil bosses that if they paid was being demanded the company would go broke :”I’d sooner there were no rubber workers left in Christchurch than accept that offer.” The union official got his wish. The company now makes its gumboots overseas.

Unions were a very necessary part of the employer-employee relationship 100 years ago. Now they do their members more harm than good…by and large.

The timing of this action looks to be a knee jerk reaction to the moratorium placed on the Ports expansion plans by the Auckland City Council and could be interpreted as petty and vindictive.

I doubt there is a person alive who has not at one point in time enjoyed a luxury at the expense of contributing to charity. Everyday all of us do things which serves nothing more than to reward ourselves. We buy big screen TVs which we do not need, we buy alcohol which we do not need, we enjoy holidays that we do not need. In all such cases we could forego those wants and contribute more charity to those in real desperation.

But we don’t so I find it highly hypocritical of those who would chastize Rand for taking that attitude to its logical conclusion. On what rational basis does one regard themselves as more ethical than Rand simply because they contribute some charity? Is it not really the case that the charity that they do contribute is only so much as will not unreasonably impinge on their own selfish desires?

On another topic , the govt has been caught lying over health stats..for eg counting health care assistants as nurses. No surprises there. Who in the Min of Health thought we needed to import two old tossers to slash the health sector? Did ministry staff handle these recruitments? Were the jobs advertised in NZ? Did the Min boffins contract this out to a Wgtn firm ? At what price?
Who in the Ministry thinks we are still in the 1950s?

Also, who is the investor who underwrote the raising of funds? Were they aligned to the US? Why the secrecy?

Joanna, I want 30 stories buildings built in Christchurch, so do many of the more enlightened business people I converse with.

They, like me, understand that the only way to have a genuine, live and exciting CBD is to have high-rise office buildings and they, again like me, understand that the technology is there to build safe high-rise buildings.

No doubt they, once again like me, also recognise that is was the low-med rise buildings (a five and a three from memory) that broke and killed people.

Why do you have so much trouble with the facts?

I don’t have any trouble with facts..I think you have difficulty distinguishing your own opinions from facts..So you and some of your mates want 30 story buildings..great go for it..but myself and my mates have very little confidence in NZ , in NZ authorities , in the parlous state of our structural engineering industry etc. etc CHCH CBD was already dead before FEB22 nd. It is like trying to resurrect a corpse , much of the capital has already moved to AK…but each to his own.

Can you imagine this same building built in NZ at that pace? 15 days! Fuck here it would take 15 days to get the coffee roster sorted.

Now in Glenfield there is a road upgrade, about 400 meters. In 3 weeks Fulton Hogan and others have put up road cones, removed road cones and replace with plastic barriers; some trees got removed, some holes got dug, some pipes got placed in the work area so that they can be shifted to dig more holes.

This baby factory, with an automatic means of child production,(no father or partner or husband evident, bnenefit sucking fraud), owes HNZ $4500 and cries and whinges to the media when no one will rent her somewhere to live.
The stupid fucking taxpayer who masquerades as a JOURNALIST then makes a splash on her behalf and corners HNZ into making an apology and rinning round after the scum.

HNZ should tell her to get stuffed. (Phil, you are a nice guy but grow some balls).
The JOURNA;IST should stop and think about the taxes they pay to supportthis kind of leach and then stop writing shit unless they are prepared to donate their own income.

When Miss Hiroti had to move out of accommodation with family north of Huntly she initially approached several rental agencies, but was turned down due to her losing a Tenancy Tribunal hearing to pay $4500 for outstanding rent, rubbish removal and damage to a Porirua state house.

Lori Hiroti, 27, and her three children, Temorehu, 9, Arreis-Jayde, 4, and Hoani-Puru, 3, have been living in their aunt’s state home garage for the past month after accommodation with family north of Huntly became unavailable.

Miss Hiroti has outstanding Housing NZ debt which she was paying off regularly, but she said with three children living in a garage, she felt Hamilton’s Housing NZ staff should have taken her situation more seriously, and helped her rather than “being patronising”.

Given that this benescum is probably a Morgan Realtive maybe she could ask Tuku and his clan to front up instead of wasting the tribes money fighting in court and various other modern day initiatives.
