The Mayor for all of Auckland
March 9th, 2012 at 2:00 pm by David FarrarI defend Len Brown in my Herald column today:
Len Brown campaigned to be the first Mayor of the Auckland super-city with the slogan, that he would be the Mayor for all of Auckland.
Mayor Brown has come under huge pressure from his party, his donors and his activist supporters to abandon his campaign pledge, and to intervene in the Ports of Auckland dispute. It is to his credit that he has resisted putting the interests of the Labour Party above the interests of Auckland.
I conclude:
Len Brown got elected on a slogan of being the Mayor for all of Auckland. The Labour Party shouldn’t complain that he is taking that slogan seriously and putting the interests of Auckland ahead of the interests of the Labour Party affiliated Maritime Union. He should be congratulated for his stance.
In my full column I articulate why I think this has helped Brown get re-elected.

I was watching this strange little character present the Auckland Cup to the winning connections the other night- There is something seriously abnormal about Len Brown…he just doesn’t seem ‘wired up’ right to me.

I don’t think he has a political identity any more so he’s getting a backlash from the right and the left. It’s a situation of ‘will the real Len Brown stand up,’ maybe it could be as simple as that he’s not tough enough for Aucklanders. If for example he’d taken the side of the wharfies everybody would have known where he stood, in the meantime he’s copping it from the left and it seems the right are jubilant over his failure of identity and where he stands?

Auckland didn’t vote Brown in – we voted Banks out. Without the mischievous use of MMP, Epsom would have done the same.

And yet it’s still a much better place to live than Wellington and the rest of NZ

Interesting censorship going on at Granny, I made a couple of innocuous comments criticizing Labour and the CTU – neither published.
It seems some/many Herald staff are card carrying commies.
