Changes within Labour

David Shearer's chief of staff is apparently set to depart after just a couple of months in the job.

Former MP was appointed Mr Shearer's right-hand man after the leadership change late last year but is understood to be quitting to return to his home town of .

Mr Nash could not be contacted yesterday. Sources say he decided to return to Napier to boost his chances of regaining the seat Labour lost in 2005, and to spend more time with his family.

His partner gave birth just a few weeks before he started the job on February 1.

But his departure is likely to fuel speculation over differences of opinion within Labour's senior leadership team over strategy.

It will be interesting to see, if the speculation is correct, replaces Nash. It is an absolutely role, as if Labour wins the election they generally go on to become the PM's Chief of Staff.
