    I had no idea those lived in NZ – never even seen a picture of one before.

    And those have got to be the most evil looking eyes of any bird, they more than compensate for the bill…

    I’ve seen them from a distance, but never close up. They just looked like herons from afar, but those eyes are really strange.

    They’re a recent immigrant from Australia. The distribution is fairly patchy but they’re still found in a lot of spots.

    The eyes are a kind of breeding season thing. The bill is though very funky. I liked the shot for showing off the eyes though.
