20 Spitfires buried in Burma during war to be returned to UK

Twenty iconic Spitfire aircraft buried in Burma during the Second World War are to be repatriated to Britain after an intervention by David Cameron.
The Prime Minister secured a historic deal that will see the fighter aircraft dug up and shipped back to the UK almost 67 years after they were hidden more than 40-feet below ground amid fears of a Japanese occupation.
Advances in technology and the emergence of more agile jets meant they were never used and in July 1945, officials fearing a Japanese occupation abandoned them on the orders of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the head of South East Asia Command, two weeks before the atom bombs were dropped, ending the conflict.
“They were just buried there in transport crates,” Mr Cundall said. “They were waxed, wrapped in greased paper and their joints tarred. They will be in near perfect condition.”

Anyone notice the lobbying piece on the Nation (Unsworth and Allen interview)?
Unsworth needs to keep his hands firmly planted on the desk – or take valium. His nervous twitches (hands shaking) indicated something less than favourable for his shadowy craft.
Allen’s suggestion of an MP/Minister log of ALL visitors/contacts each day is excellent. Just add the subjects discussed.

Well apparently kids have become pickup, put down toyss in thier life scheme of things and we the taxpayer must pay for thier lack of reponsibility and thier need to have these luvely pd/pu toys.

The widows of Indonesian fishermen who died when a Korean boat sank in New Zealand waters in 2010 have finally received compensation – not from the vessel’s owners or insurers, but from the taxpayer-funded Accident Compensation Corporation.

For some of them, the ACC payment amounts to seven times what they earn in a year.

So far South Korea’s Sajo Oyang Corporation, owners of the 38-year-old trawler Oyang 70, have done nothing for the families of five Indonesians killed when the vessel sank in 2010 in calm waters 740km off the Otago coast.

Not criticising the ladies from Indonesia but where is the accountability of the companies that refuse to pay both their fishermen and their NZ taxes and the hori’s that supposedly own the quota.
One fucking great rip off again.

Flipper, re the lobbying on The Nation, the bill sounds grand in principle but I don’t see how it’s going to be done in practice. And it may be trying to fix something that really isn’t broken. It could end up requiring more bureacrcary and less available communication between politicians and everyone else.

That is called making an economic decision.

Whatever happened to paying the lady next door or down the road to look after your kids while you were at work? Now there are so many regulations and rules that it has become an industry and costs have gone up accordingly. Well done. We had a ‘care-giver’ who lived in Naenae and looked after our kids so damned well and the price was dirt cheap – about $3.00 per hour it worked out at. For years they used to pick them up after school and look after them until I got there about 4:30-5pm until I managed more flexible work arrangements.

..holmes say that even if we have a major oil spill down here..that ‘the healing power of nature’ will fix everything up…

..holmes then defends fracking…

..and attempts a final put-down of kedgeley..’i’m sure they’ve heard you..!’..(obviously upset at her effective demolishing of his dirty-energy-company-pimping…)

o’reilly then invites open derision..when he defends the pitiful low royalty rates we receive from the dirty-energy-companies..’cos ‘we are so far away’…(!)

holmes then interviews english…and asks if aussie companies like us because of our low-wage-economy…

..and compounds that question by asking is that the reason so many are moving to australia..

Um no. As usual you left types can’t read simple plain english nor comprehend it.
I was saying that the lady made choices and has choices like all of us. I see no reason at all why she should not be responsible about her choices along with the other person who helped in that choice.
I see no reason why other taxpayers should be harnessed to her family and her choices.

Strange concept I know.

Happy to give a hand up to those that need. Not interested in giving handouts to those that make bad choices and fail to take responsibility for those choices. This country is full of people who think that nanny state should wipe their bums all day everyday but nanny so often doesn’t help those in society that can’t help themselves.

When you sort that out in your tiny mind you will see things from a better perspective.

As I pointed out kids are NOT pickup/ put down toys to be taken up as a HOBBY for the sake of feeling good. They are a full time committment for at least 18 years. Can’t understand why educated people just don’t understand that. Do you?

Phil U, I did the grasshopper move last night at Longroom bar last night and 2 chicks came up to the dance floor and danced with me. If you can’t get a job Phil, I suggest you learn hiphop as a hobby, because you’ll definitely get laid when you go out dancing.

Something for berea, it goes along with the concept that among the blues there are individuals who favour individual appearances and elevate self importance. Contrast that with the crusaders, no egos at work, no world cup hangovers, just getting about their work as a team. I don’t know if there is a place for individualism in any term, but certainly not in a losing team, that has lost its identity and winning culture. It seems some of the blues players are too famous in their own minds, I’d prefer the crusaders model where everything comes down to team culture and public perception of that. I’d prefer to see a losing team that were consistent in appearance, not using ‘look at me I’m an individual’ duplicity but getting into the hard work of being a team player.

For all the various comments about Lam, I just wonder if he hasn’t let himself be too influenced by culture other than rugby culture and not got the hard message across that it’s his way or the highway, right down to an appearance code and on field conduct. Meanwhile Dalton seems to be a ditherer, as Strachnan points out, there are questions about the ex hurricane players, the contracting of whom, now appears to have been a complete match for the players mindset that one good play will turn a game overlooking that only consistent, hard work 80 min, low risk rugby is what the blues require.

you will still be able to eat meat..but the animals will no longer need to suffer..as they do now…

..this is why i am so ‘up’ on this lab-meat…

..i’ don’t want to eat the stuff..but i also see the world isn’t going to suddenly stop eating flesh…

..and this is the best bet to lessen/stop those animal-concentration camps..

..and hopefully eventually stop..the wholesale suffering that flesh is currently drenched in..

one of the more amusing converstion conversations i had around this subject was with brian edwards on his blog..shortly before he banned/banished me…

..edwards’ sniffily noted how he could never stop eating meat ‘cos he so loved the taste of thinks like franfurters..

..(the most warned-against/carcinogenic of all flesh/meats..but there are none so blind as those determined not to see..eh..?..)

..edwards was silent to my pointing out that he would be right as home as a vegan..

..as all the fake-meat products some vegans use..(fake sausages etc…)..?

..they all taste just like those carcinogenic-bangers..

Although “the favourable tax treatment of property investment” accounted for about 50% of house price increases between 2001 and 2007, the working group said, there was also strong evidence that rapid swings in immigration brought about price-rise “shocks”.
There was a sharp spike in immigration in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and, said working group committee member Dr Andrew Coleman, it appeared that property prices did not fall anywhere near as greatly when immigration fell again.
The report added that there was little evidence that immigration boosted local incomes. In fact, the need to build roads and schools meant that net migration contributed to the national deficit. ”

NZ should be getting more from mining

The Energy Minister has admitted New Zealand isn’t getting enough in royalties from mining.

Phil Heatley says the Government is reviewing royalty rates, as it opens up vast areas for exploration.

He says there’s probably not much scope to raise the 43c in the dollar charged to companies extracting oil and gas, because New Zealand is remote and it would drive investors away.

But he’s told TVNZ’s Q&A programme miners extracting coal, gold and minerals can expect to pay more.

“If we are going to do more mining, more oil and gas exploration, and we are saying that we want to put that into schools and hospitals and all these other things New Zealand wants then we do need to make sure that we are getting our pound of flesh.”

A senior medical officer in ACC’s sensitive claims unit has made legal threats to a blogger who posted information about his employment history, in the wake of a mass privacy breach.

Peter Dodwell, the branch medical advisor of the unit that deals with rape and abuse victims, was fired from his previous job in Australia over a privacy issue.

Both Dodwell and ACC’s senior medical advisor, Peter Jansen, have threatened legal action against blogger Kyle Macdonald, a psychotherapist who regularly speaks out against the corporation

I agree with the sentiment.
I had one coach who was an ex WW2 vet and a previous holder of a nz heavyweight boxing champion title and knew where I played, ask me at the beginning of a new season, and a new team of which he was the coach saying ‘where do you play?’
‘Anywhere.’ After which he explained that’s what he liked, and how he didn’t like players telling him where they wanted to play. Sometimes I think that might have resulted in very high marks in tech drawing and engineering later that year. Who knows.

On Nonu, I’ve got use to him, more so because I think it was his response to all the talk about SBW going to take 2nd 5/8 for the WC that was big part of our winning. He came back from that talk with a vengeance that I think helped gel the team into the WC. But overall, I’m not big on individualism in any form when it comes to team sport, if your thinking about yourself you’re not thinking about the team. Ali Williams was arguably the best lock in 2007 WC, but when I see him smile at a mistake I realise his rugby mind has departed the scene. 10 man rugby would help, but the coach leaving the glamour boys on the sidelines until they complied to the ethic and turn out would get my vote – because there’s nothing like everyone knowing the rules that are all the same for every player.

Seems that they had a “Bring a dog” night at Ohakea V2. A prize was up for grabs to the winner.
One of the lads latched on to Aunty who thought it was great to be snatched up by a daring aviator.
Later in the evening she discovered the truth and has hated the Airforce ever since.

It has never been reported if her erstwhile Beau won the prize! 🙂

As there are 20 of them, and they’re all the same type, they could keep 10, and sell the rest to individuals, and institutions. They’d soon be rolling in the necessary cash.

LJ, all origin of financial crisis can be traced back to government interference in the free markets. Most people don’t understand this. Here is an explanation from the point of view of Austrian Economics.

The severity of this shows up in what economists called business cycle and econo-physicists called it (economic/financial fluctuations since periodicity in the markets doesn’t really exist).

FF, in my reading it was caused by too little regulation. If you let people do whatever they want in the markets, they will lie, cheat and steal. This is what happened.

And it wasn’t accidental, it was by design, by politicians allowing bankers to do it, in return for massive donations.

People need prison time for this, I mean finance ministers, prime ministers, CEOs and presidents. They do. This was not an innocent stumbling and bumbling which all just happened by accident.

LJ, the only lawmaker in the US who understands of why business cycle occurs is Ron Paul, that’s why he’s going after the Fed Reserve. The very existence of the Fed, is the problem. The Fed create money out of thin air, which is allowed by law. In a free markets, that won’t happen and financial institutions won’t trade recklessly as what happened in the recent crisis, because it human nature.

It is not because of less regulation. It is because of over regulation and government involvement in the economy.

Here’s something to ponder. Do you really think that with all the heavy regulation imposed in the financial markets because of recent crisis, will prevent future crisis? Think about it. IT WILL NOT STOP FUTURE FINANCIAL CRISES. That’s fact. There have been crises in the last 100 years with every time it has happened, more regulations were imposed. I watched all that. When ever I watch Ron Paul links I tend to view the associated links. I can’t see why he infuriates some people. I liked his point that the car makers should be bailed out but with private money where investors will pay the value like with any other investment. I also like his view that the states shouldn’t be empire building because of the destructive financial abyss it creates. I’ve had the view that you don’t assist a country by destroying its infra structure, nor assist your own by needing to rebuild it.

FF, agree with you re: the Fed and also fractional reserve banking. Most people know I’m a long time critic of both. However, unregulated financial markets will not work, not with human nature.

An unregulated market is predicated on having fully informed rational customers making rational decisions to prevent investing in bad products and these customers do not exist, in a real world market. They never have and they never will. The herd instinct overrides all other calculations and herd happens when greed kicks in just as often as it does when panic kicks in. That’s what screws the unregulated approach.

Most OECD governments (including New Zealand’s) are still paying at least lip service to the fraud of man-made global warming/climate change, and are spending billions in public money to subsidize worthless emissions trading schemes, forestry plantations, corn ethanol, and less-than-worthless grid-connected wind and solar power.

These international scoundrels and imbeciles (some of whom, to our shame, are New Zealanders), aided and assisted by the mainstream news media, the left in general and the greens in particular, have wasted at least a trillion dollars worldwide, and counting. In the meantime, millions of children do not even have access to clean drinking water, which they could have for a lot less than a trillion dollars. How these warmists could ever imagine that they have the moral high-ground is truly perplexing.

Despite more than two decades of relentless propoganda from the warmists and their associated carpetbaggers, CAGW sceptics and realists (mainly amateur or retired scientifically trained people, many of whom are mathmaticians, scientists, engineers or geologists), have managed to soundly defeat the warmists in the scientific debate. When is the last time you heard the specious claim “the debate is over” ? Of course the fact the the “global” temperature as measured by satellites and even by the warmists’ fiddled data sets, has not changed for the last 15 years, while CO2 emissions and concentrations have risen significantly – has been a big help.

The next stage in this ongoing moral war will be a worldwide popular movement to limit or remove the financial or political incentives for companies and politicians to support the fraud. For example, if you go out of your way not to buy products or services from a company that supports the fraud, tell them so, and many others do the same, the company will eventually stop supporting it. Conversely, if you make an effort to support people or businesses that publicly denounce the CAGW fraud, you will be playing your part in bringing the fraud to an earlier end – for end it will. When our money stops disappearing down the CAGW sewer, we will have achieved something worthwhile.

Nostalgia, the GFC was caused by lack of regulation. It was in fact deliberate de-regulation, as I have detailed in years past. Essentially, the politicians were bribed by the bankers, who then proceeded to go fucking nuts. And the sheep in the market played along like the idiots they always are, as they did with the Dot-bomb and as they did with the 1987 crashes. Fucking doh, to them. That’s what happened.

You need to divorce quite justified criticisms of ineffectual responses to the imminent crisis climate change threatens from the science.

You are mistaken that there has been no warming for the last 15 years. The US government agencies monitoring temperature now put 2005 as the warmest year in the instrumental era. You may be relying on the Hadley Centre, but that lacks the coverage of the US agencies.

Furthermore, headline temperature responds to many forcings that may temporarily overcome the CO2 signal. This is well understood.

Finally, placing your faith in contrarians, the disaffected, retirees and/or assorted cranks (Anthony Watts, Jo Nova and the Potty Peer spring to mind) who have never published in credible journals on the topic, is simply misguided.

Try to apply rationality and, especially, use your good judgement to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Swim with rats in the sewers, and you will become one.
