An ANZAC Day post from Gallipoli

May 6th, 2012 at 7:00 am by David Farrar

I’ve become quite addicted to Today I ate a baguette blog – a travel blog by a former ministerial staffer.

Her post on ANZAC day at Gallipoli I thought was worth blogging about. The photos and commentary capture the essence of ANZAC Day so well.

I’m seriously considering going over there for the 2015 ANZAC Day. Yes I know it will be insanely crowded, but it will be an incredible experience.

David – the only reason youd need to go to Gallipoli is because during your youth you didnt get a decent wide ranging education. You probably know far too much about NZ history that is good for you and not enough about the rest of the world – especially about the origin of the two worlds wars.

My father gave me a book about the English munitions industry and how during the first war they sold ammuniton to germany via scandinavia – and that those bullets and bombs killed many allied soldiers. That sparked an interest to learn about this sort of activity in the european wars.

    David,

If you want to get something out of a visit to Gallipoli, go at any time other than ANZAC Day. Get some books before you go, read them and then spend a couple of days to really explore the place, get it into context and draw your own conclusions. Chris Pugsley’s “Gallipoli” is a good start. Also there are some very good local (Turkish) guides who provide excellent explanation and commentary.

On ANZAC Day the situation is controlled and the ability to roam over the area is not possible. Also bear in mind that in 2015 the crowd will be large and I have heard that there is likely to be a ballot to allocate tickets in order to meet the limits on the number of people who can get onto the ANZAC historic sites.
