Back to Okarito Lagoon – the breeding season provides the best time to see the nuptial plumes on display.

The tour to the herons at Okarito is definitely one of the best eco-tourism ventures I’ve participated in NZ.

    No need for me to add any proxy comment today as our resident photographic expert and critic lurks close by. It seems the missus let him out from under the stairs so I expect you’ll be hearing from him soon.

    I got a few pics of a NZ falcon the other day, staring right at me he was and let me get quite close.

    I have just got a new DSLR so no bird is safe!!

    Shunda, they are hard to get as the bird is fairly rare and is mostly on the East Coats NI> Got some myself at Easter and some video. Not 2 mtrs between us for about 20 minutes.
    I will put them up at gewius.com in the next week or so.

    @Elaycee

    Thanks- once they’re in their nuptial feathers they’re very photogenic.

    @thadavincimode

    I’m safe, you can see its feet :P

    @immigant

    Yes, no surprise why they were afforded high value in Maori society.

    @Shunda barunda

    On, wonderful! They’re certainly not common. The DSLR has also made bird photography a lot easier. The whole bird-in-flight genre had few participants in film days.

    @Viking2

    Video- that I’d love to see.

    nice…

    I saw some choice wildlife in Galapagos. If you havent been, then there’d be photo ops a plenty for such a talented lensman as yourself to shoot up a storm Chthoniid.

    …get thee thine ass there !!!

    The stars have weird effects on those long nite watches
    same with distance when its 1000s of nm at a walking pace
    Some go mad literally they just can not cope with reality with out the trappings of humanity surrounding us
    Others find a peace that can be drawn on for ever
