Griff –

Sir Frederic G. Kenyon, who was the director and principal librarian of the British Museum and second to none in authority for issuing statements about MSS, says, “…besides number, the manuscripts of the New Testament differ from those of the classical authors, and this time the difference is clear gain. In no other case is the interval of time between the composition of the book and the date of the earliest extant manuscripts so short as in that of the New Testament. The books of the New Testament were written in the latter part of the first century; the earliest extant manuscripts (trifling scraps excepted) are of the fourth century – say from 250 to 300 years later.

“This may sound a considerable interval, but it is nothing to that which parts most of the great classical authors from their earliest manuscripts. We believe that we have in all essentials an accurate text of the seven extant plays of Sophocles; yet the earliest substantial manuscript upon which it is based was written more than 1400 years after the poet’s death.”

Kenyon continues in The Bible and Archaeology: “The interval then between the dates of original composition and the earliest extant evidence becomes so small as to be in fact negligible, and the last foundation for any doubt that the Scriptures have come down to us substantially as they were written has now been removed. Both the authenticity and the general integrity of the books of the New Testament may be regarded as finally established.”

By the way, the Bible … was preserved and copied by highly educated scribes, who had to copy exactly every single letter to perfection.

Odd then with such attention to accuracy, a whole section of Mark gets added later on. Or that the earliest versions we have of John omit any mention of the stoning of the adulterer (cf. Ehrmann, NT scholar). Funny that such strict attention to perfection could resemble later legendary embellishment so well.

my point about the censoring of gospel that did not agree with the teachings of the roman church is valid
as is the fact the new testament does not contain scripture written at the time of Jesus but the teachings of persons removed from that time by at least two generations

I’ve just pulled out my copy of the Leicester Mercury’s report of the City v Tranmere Worthington Cup Wembley final of Feb 2000.

Clint Hill’s red card and sending off after his foul on Emile Heskey was well deserved. He’d already been yellow carded for a similar attack on Stefan Oakes.

Full time score: Leicester City 2 – Tranmere Rovers 1, and I read that,” Tranmere’s disappointed fans chanted “Boring, boring Leicester” to mask their own deep dejection”.

However, in the spirit of true soccer sportsmanship I have to concede the Mercury report also contains the following:

“Leicester are often credited with being one of the most spirited and hard-working teams in the land, but Tranmere matched them every step of the way in a show which must have had manager John Aldridge’s own heart beating with pride as the Birkenhead banner fluttered in the Wembley breeze”

For someone as anti-christian/religion as you, you spend an awful lot of time quoting biblical texts.
Trouble is, quoting the gospel of Thomas, which has always been recognised as being apocraphyl and does not represent any Christian teaching, simply shows what an absolute dumb arse you are.

I just think you are either:1. A sicko who looks for any excuse to attack Christainity.
2. Someone desperately searching for the Truth, but not fiding it.

Which one is it?

In the meantime, you are very obtuse in your exegesis. 🙂

You are making a presumption that all atheists have either never been exposed to religion or are living wretched lives of gross unhappiness while waiting for some evangelical God botherer to save them. In my case I was brought up during the Christianity saturated 50s & later sent to a church boarding school to cement my relation with the Big Bloke Upstairs. There were plenty of us who had the crap rammed down our throats & although we have rejected the whole concept it doesn’t mean that we don’t have a good grounding in religious teaching.

I frankly don’t care one way or the other. If believing in a higher being floats your boat then go hard. You are, however, optimistically naive if you think that those who the church has shat upon from a great height are not going to point out possible holes in your belief.

I and others would say yes it would have been closer to the truth of the teachings of jesus than the dogma and Rome centric views of the present Cristian church
It is as valid as any of the testaments of the gospel and is one of a number of texts removed from the new testament as it did not reflect the views of the gentile church
As i have previously stated it would be ignorant to not believe in something with out at least a working understanding of wot that belief entails
I am an atheist and in my late teens I made an effort to read the Bible and the history of the times Some thing that many Christians have failed to do
Ask most Christians how many Israelites died on crosses in ad thirty and you get HUH some thing that has relevance to the beliefs of the Cristian church today as the churches view of the time has been filtered by the necessity of the roman occupation
The classic is “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s” in present Cristian dogma commands people to respect state authority and to pay the taxes it demands of them.
when it was written it said the opposite of the present understanding ie dont give to Rome a drachma as they have no rite to the fruits of the promised land

by the way congratulations yours is the first post I have read on KB that has required me to look up the meaning of more than one word 🙂

Archbishop Fulton Sheen said not to argue with atheists who used to be believers as their issue is normally something moral. Otherwise we just go around pointless circles. The moral issue is generally sex. Young Johnny or Timmy has sex or looks at porn and then can’t cope with the guilt, so denies religious belief altogether. Sexual sin distorts everything.

That’s the theory, but there is a counter-theory that it’s an inability to properly associate with their own sex at age 2 due to emotional distance or some other factor. That way it feels like they’ve been born with it, but because we as a society really seem to focus on treating boys and girls as interchangeable and because we just assume it’s not repairable, we don’t know how to help these kids before they fall into damaging lifestyles.

No mate, I’m not making any presumptions at all. I have quite a number of friends who are so called atheists. We have a beer together on regular occasions, and on rare occasions, religion crops up. None of them are disparaging. Some, like yourself, were brought up on a solid diet of religion, which they have rejected – partly. But we don’t get into heavy discussions on biblical interpretation, or the apocraphyl texts like the gospl of Thomas, because it is meaningless. We agree to disagree, and respect each others POV.

I also went to a Catholic boarding school. I don’t think I had religion thrust down my throat, but everyone has their own take – I came from a staunch Catholic family, although Dad never became a Catholic for many years. And as always, there came a time when I has to consider whether or not what I had been taught was dinkum. After a lot of thought and investigation – at 19 – 26 years of age, I decided for myself that it was. No doubt, other came to other conclusions – that is their free choice.

I now have a grown family, and grandchildren. I have decided that I will continue my work and my involvement with my family and friends – Christians, agnostics and atheists – all of them – and at the same time study for the Catholic diaconate. That means, that, God willing, I may be ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church sometime soon. That does not preclude my discussions on this, or any other blog. It does not mean I will become a “bigotted Christian” and condemn anyone. I will continue to be Don the Kiwi, and continue to help who I can, express disagreement and criticism where necessary, and continue to enjoy life and a few beers with my friends.

Do you recall the rugby deck of cards. I can;t find the lyrics for the NZ song, which was a hit some years ago:

During the latter part of last season, a bunch of students had been on a long sponsored walk. They arrived in a little town called Ystrad.
The next day being Tuesday, some of the boys went training. A Welsh Rugby Union coach commanded the boys in training, and after he had outlined various scrummaging techniques, he told them to take out their Welsh Rugby Union handbook.
Those of the boys who had Welsh Rugby Union handbooks, took them out. But one boy had only a Deck of Cards, and so he spread them out.
The coach saw the cards and said ‘Boy, put away those cards!’
After the training session was over the boy was taken away, and taken in front of the Welsh Rugby Union.
And Bill Clement said, ‘Why have, you brought this boy here?’
‘For playing cards in a training session, sir.’
`And what have you to say for yourself, son?’
`Much, sir!’
And Bill Clement said ‘I hope so. For if you haven’t I will punish you more severely than any boy was ever punished.’
The boy said, ‘Sir, I have been away in college for six months and had with me neither Welsh Rugby Union handbook or my Ray Williams coaching leaflets!
‘But I hope to satisfy you, sir, with the purity of my intentions.’
And with that the boy began his story:
‘You see sir, when I look at the ace, it reminds me there is but one game, Rugby Football! And the ace also reminds me of Eddie Waring when he goes “Eh, eh, it’s an up-and-under.”
When I see the two It reminds me that there are two codes of Rugby… Rugby Union and * *!
When I see the trey, I think of the Viet Gwent – the Pontypool Front Row. Charlie Faulkner, Bobby Windsor and Graham Price.
When I see the four, it reminds me of the four Home Countries: Wales, Scotland, Ireland and ???????.
When I see the five, I think of the big five: three were wise and picked Dai – and two were foolish and picked Cobner!
When I see the six of course I think of Dai Morris.
When I see the seven, I think of the Snelling Sevens at the end of each season.
When I see the eight I think of the great Mervyn Davies, the greatest “number eight” in the world.
And of course when I see the nine I think of – Gareth Edwards? No, Dai Morris upside-down!
When I see the ten it reminds me of the years I worked in the Outside-half Factory, producing that self-same number ten.
When I see the jack, or the knave, or the devil I think of the Rugby League scouts.
When I see the queen I think of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, who bestowed on the great Gareth Edwards the MBE. (Some people will do anything for tickets!)
When I see the king, it reminds me of the player they once called “the king” – Barry John.
When I count the number of spots on my deck of cards I find 365 – the number of points we’ve scored against England in the last couple of games at Cardiff!
There are 52 cards in a pack: the number of people who come and see Pontardulais on Saturdays!
There are four suits: the number of weeks in a month.
There are twelve picture cards: the number of times Wales have won the Triple Crown.
There are thirteen tricks : the number of times they’ll have won it by this time next year!
So you see, sir, my pack of cards serves me not only as an almanac but as a Welsh Rugby Union handbook.
And friends, that story is true. I know, ‘cos I was that boy!’

Even Aquinas admitted it was about belief and not proof – give it over religious types – the rest of us see it on a par with homeopathy. You are perceived as irrational and willing to believe in stuff with no evidence – your choice – but understand it is open to a certain amount of ridicule. You set yourselves up as an easy target – you are not being persecuted – we truly do not care about you enough to persecute you. You are just easy to insult as faith is a logic free zone.

A repeat but since it’s roast the Welsh night:

Man is being prosecuted in Chester Crown Court for unnatural acts with a sheep. Prosecuting counsel wants to get away for an early bath so he says to the defense barrister that a guilty plea from the defendant for attempting the said act would be acceptable to the Crown and the defendant would probably get away with a modest fine.

Defense barrister refuses to accept the offer. ‘Why not?’ asks the prosecutor.

‘Well, if my client pleads guilty to attempt he will never be able to show his face in the pub again.’

Prosecuting counsel looks puzzled

‘Just imagine’, says defense counsel, ‘the things people would say ….’

Prosecuting counsel looks even more puzzled

‘….. here comes Dai – can’t even fuck a sheep’

Labour MP Louisa Wall said she was drafting a private members’ bill which would define marriage and enable same sex couples to wed.
The bill had not been discussed by Labour’s caucus but Wall said she hoped to be able to put it in the ballot next week.
Marriage equality and adoption equality were critical priorities for the gay community and her bill would provide both, she said.

It is more congruent with Jesus being a philosophizer
than the religious mumbo jumbo of the Cristian church
Its something that I had a vague knowledge of but in debating the un godly botheres today I was fortunate in revisiting its content
There is some truth of the concept of searching within yourself for a philosophy of life that most atheist do at some stage to justify their moral standpoints

read the bible many, many times- altar boy for years – educated by Jesuits – I probably know more about most aspects of christianity and the bible than the vast majority of practising christians.

The point about the bible is one can always find a supporting quote, view, or gospel as it is rather disparate. It can support the incredibly intolerant, which is weird as turn the other cheek was one of the most attractive aspects of the bible.

Morals do not need religion for many people – sadly many people need religion for morals. Christian morals are a pretty good starting point for any moral position.

The thing is Griff, the gospel of Thomas is not part of the bible. It purports to be written by Thomas the apostle, but it was in fact, written arguably 100 years after Thomas was martyred in India.

Many of the apocraphyl books from early times contain a large degree of truth. It took many years discerning what books held revealed truth and which were not in line with true theology. The books of the bible, apart from the Old Testament – the Torah of the Jewish religion – in other words the New testament books, were not finally decided till about the year 450.

slijmbal is correct in so far as you can take a quote from some part of the bible to justify many opposing positions; they key factor is, does it conform to the complete teaching, or just a selected part of it. But quoting the gospel ofThomas is erroneous.

Wrong Griff.

The gospel of Matthew was written around the year 38 or 40 – just a few years after Jesus death and resurrection.
And the other gospels were written within the next 50 years.
The reason was, they thought Jesus was returning not long after His ascension. As time went by, they came to the understanding that it could be many years – thousands in fact – before his return, so they committed Jesus teaching to writing – Matthew in Hebrew/Aramaic, and the others in Greek.
