Plagiarism?
May 30th, 2012 at 11:00 am by David FarrarWhale Oil quotes The Standard quoting David Cunliffe:
It’s a budget that picks pennies out of the pockets of children with after-school jobs, raids the piggy banks of the elderly with prescriptions to fill, crushes the dreams of many university hopefuls and attacks those with the least power to defend themselves. Not only is the budget not brave, it is possibly the most cowardly thing I’ve seen in my life.
Whale highlights a letter to the editor which said:
A budget which has the worst growth in 50 years, sees 50,000 people moving to Australia and has 50,000 more people on benefits.
So who is the original author and who is the plagiarist? Worth finding out.
UPDATE: No plagiarism at all. It seems David Cunliffe liked the quote on someone’s Facebook page, meaning it appeared on his timeline, and The Standard misattributed the quote to Cunliffe.

Or was it a template letter sent to many to send to local media, and someone (or many) just cocked up?
Whatever, it shows how shallow those idiots really are.

Good lines are likely to be repeated though, aren’t they? Kudos to whoever was the original author.

Maybe it’s repeated there because it is a budget that picks pennies out of the pockets of children with after-school jobs, raids the piggy banks of the elderly with prescriptions to fill, crushes the dreams of many university hopefuls and attacks those with the least power to defend themselves. Not only is the budget not brave, it is possibly the most cowardly thing I’ve seen in my life.

Google is your friend, so I know the answer. I feel like I’ve seen that language, or some remarkably similar, about a different budget though, in years gone by. Maybe in Aus? It’d be much more amusing if this copying was itself of a copied speech.

Probably some back room Labour staffer is the original author.
I’d be surprised if Labour MPs don’t get a cheat sheet with a series of sound bites to use.
Ensures the message is consistent.
I know it’s a very slow news day, but is there really nothing better than this ?

Pretty simple explanation. Cunliffe has liked the picture and therefore it’s appeared in his facebook feed. Somebody has erroneously attributed it to Cunliffe. So more a minor stuff up than a conspiracy.

Every aspect of that quote is hyperbolic bloviated bullshit.

a very sheltered life all these folk have had if that is the most cowardly thing they have ever seen.

DD, taxing kids who might get $10 or $20 a week for working after school is so brave and courageous. Meanwhile, the cost of superannuation continues to escalate and the government won’t debate the issue.

so its not cowardly then ross69?

Liarbore are broke, good speech writers cost. The sheeple are thick. Like a good joke you can always tell it a few times before everyone has heard it.

ross6>taxing kids who might get $10 or $20 a week for working after school is so brave and courageous
These kids don’t just deliver papers on their own. They ride on footpaths that the rest of us paid for. Their bicycles aren’t stolen because of the police that the rest of us paid for. When they catch a cold from delivering papers in the middle of winter then they go to doctors that the rest of us paid for. They don’t have to worry that marauding bands seize everything they own, because of the work the rest of us did. God bless, they can keep some of their earnings. But part of the underlying social contract is that you take some of their income and give it to other people.
(c) Mostly Elizabeth Warren… sticking it to the 1% regardless of what age they are.

Yeah, I recall hearing a similar quote spoken in Greek….

Surely there must be some allowance these kids could claim for having to use their own bicycles to deliver the newspapers?

Did I miss the usual round up of glowing editorials praising the budget that DPF loves to cut and paste onto kiwiblog or did everyone say that the budget sucked and DPF is quietly hoping it all goes away?

Apart from a CGT and raising the Super age Cunliffe and Shearer have few to no idea’s on how to balance the budget. Labour threw money at the issues’s when they were in power ie WFF and interest free loans for students but lacked the courage to tackle the structural issue’s of welfare , health and education.

How many politicians say the words written by other people without crediting the author?
How many speechwriters are employed at parliament?

The Herald reported:
“Mr Key – a paperboy in his youth – said he found out about the move at Cabinet on Monday and did not regret it despite the publicity.”
My God, he didn’t even know about the change til after the Budget had been produced. The PM is trying to defend something he knew absolutely nothing about.

I was under the impression that kids no longer used bikes to deliver papers as its considered too dangerous. The local Herald deliveries are all done by kids from their parents cars.

Plagiarism or not, taxing kids for after school jobs was just fucking dumb and unnecessary and undid many features of the budget that deserved a more positive focus. Ebineezer English gained nothing and lost a lot by that move.

What are you talking about? I was taxed as a paper boy and a leaflet distributor when I was a school boy. Nothing has changed whatsoever.
