Winston upgrades from reliable to impeccable

May 8th, 2012 at 8:12 pm by David Farrar

The Timaru Herald reports:

Sanfords has labelled Winston Peters’ claim that 40,000 litres of oil spilled into Timaru harbour last week as “deeply bizarre”.

“I don’t know where he got his figures from. They don’t stack up,” Sanfords Deepwater manager Darryn Shaw said.

The incident is believed to have occurred after a Sanfords’ deep-sea vessel the San Enterprise had a mechanical failure in one of its internal pipes on Wednesday.

NZ First leader Mr Peters remained adamant yesterday that at least 40,000 litres of oil was spilled into the harbour. He would not reveal the basis for his claim when contacted by the Herald.

“It comes from an impeccable source,” Mr Peters said.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) coast and waterways safety manager Evan Walker reaffirmed the initial assessment that up to 4000 litres of oil were spilt in the incident.

So Winston’s source is now impeccable. Is this like his impeccable source about the fleet of Mercedes that WINZ owned?

Was it Peters who banged on for years about a Cook Strait ferry grounding itself? I never saw why he saw it as a political issue. I don’t see why he thinks the quantity of oil leaked is an issue. NZ First supporters must just like to argue about issues of no consequence.

For those of us over 40, that’s about 10,000 gallons…thats a FUCK of a lot of oil, and a great deal more than most fishing boats would carry I suspect…

Is there any truth to the rumor that the “impeccable” source was Mr. John Daniels, esquire?

If there is 4 litres of oil mixed in a 20 litre quantity of water, is all the water safe by some measure or is it just 20 litres of oil?
Those with swimming pools will likely know the answer.

A New Zealand-flagged fishing boat has been detained following a large oil spill in a harbour in American Samoa and deficiencies found during a coastguard inspection.

” Nearly 2000 litres of diesel is believed to have spilled from the boat, Ocean Breeze inside Pago Pago Harbor, Radio New Zealand International reports.

Coastguard Lieutenant Steven Claskey says the spill was reported by the boat’s crew and the coastguard is overseeing the clean-up operation.

It has also detained the boat following an inspection which found that pollution prevention equipment was not operating property.

Lieutenant Claskey says this is the third fishing boat owned by Sanfords to be detained in Pago Pago for deficiencies in the past three months.”

Peters has a point, it would seem that Sanford’s have a history of oil spills and I would suspect that the vessel involved might well be one of the 3 having issues in American Samoa.

David Garrett, ouch, well spotted that is a hell of a lot of lubrication.

Estimated spillage was up to four tonnes of oil
    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/6857515/Tonnes-of-fuel-spilled-into-harbour

    158.99 liters ≈ 0.1364 tonnes
    http://watd.wuthering-heights.co.uk/subpages/oilconverter.html

    1 tonne /0.1364 = 7.33137829912
    7.33137829912 x 4 tonnes = 29.325513196481
    29.325513196481 x 158.99 = 4662.46… litres of oil
about 11.65% of what Winston claims

Probably got had an anonymous undeclared racing donation of $40K the same day and got the numbers mixed up year the racing industry got a tax cut.

Either way he’s full of it, as also illustrated in this instance…. He should have learned by now that when you are in a hole stop digging. Now sure his MO is bash your way out but surely he’s worked out he’s not invincible when he’s not holding the balance of power.

So someone is old..what does that mean? What is the relevance of such a comment? You yourself will be ”old” one day soon..My friends in their 80s and 90s do not consider someone in their 60s to be old.
It is rather tedious and of course very telling just how much petulance emerges on Kiwiblog whenever Winston Peters is part of the topic. The lack of maturity reveals clearly just many people commenting have many decades to go before they will ever be honoured by the adjective ”old.”

David, I assumed when they said 40,000 litres of oil, they meant HFO, or even MFO, which I would think would certainly not be an outrageous amount of oil onboard. And in-fact the vessel holds 562m3 of fuel oil and knowing the Vaasa engines well, I’m pretty sure they run on HFO.

The spill was from the San Enterprise: http://www.sanford.co.nz/sanfordfisheries/our-fleet/en/deep-water-fleet.cfm

Not defending Winston in the slightest, as usual I’ll guarantee he is being a lying prick.
