There will be a march in Auckland today marking the final day of broadcasting from TVNZ 7.

Auckland Save TVNZ 7 Funeral March
    Saturday 30th at 4.30pm
Starting at Queen Elizabeth Square (Britomart)

Starting at Queen Elizabeth Square (Britomart) at 4.30pm, we then walk up Queen Street, Victoria Street West, past TVNZ to St Matthew-in-the-City for speeches. We know the media will be out in force to get shots of us filing past the TVNZ building so please come along and show your support for public service television.

As well as protesting the government’s decision we are also mourning the loss of our last public service television channel. Please bring flowers or a candle and tell your friends to come along too. It’s a chance to be amongst friends as we remember and celebrate one of the best television channels in New Zealand’s history.

The weather forecast is looking good so please come along for a fun, festive ‘funeral’.

Good on you Myles, I hope you have a good day.

During her second term in Government, Helen Clark ordered a wide-ranging inquiry into police conduct which was supposed to lead to a major internal overhaul. But their subsequent actions in the Dotcom case show that at the highest level the police still consider themselves a law unto themselves. This cannot be brushed under the carpet. Time for another independent inquiry.

The Clark inquiry was only for feminists to kick the cops in the balls – it was nothing to do with legality of gathering evidence.

hj – Summary of world’s oil situation

    Doom…doom….DOOM
    Cathastrophic Antropogenic Global Warming
    Peak Oil
    Millions of Climate Refugees
    Melting Ice Caps
    Extinction
    Heat waves, hurricanes, pestilence, death………

After this message from the watermelons and chicken littles.

Global oil reserves rose by 31 billion barrels to 1,653 billion barrels in 2011

Iraq added 28 billion bbls and Russia, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia all increased reserves by 1 billion bbls. Proved reserves remain concentrated in OPEC which controls 72% of the world’s oil reserves, the highest proportion since 1998. Overall, the long-term trend is the world continues to add more reserves than it uses while the global R/P ratio stands at 54.2 at the end of 2011.

High prices result in soaring oil reserves: John Kemp

By the end of 2011, the world’s proved oil reserves stood at 1.65 trillion barrels, enough to last another 54 years at present rates of consumption.
Proved reserves have risen 20 percent, from 1.36 trillion barrels (45.7 years worth of production) in 2005, even though 180 billion barrels have been produced in last six years.

    http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/06/29/column-kemp-oil-reserves-idINL6E8HT43B20120629

    And that’s just oil.

Peak Oil is right answer to wrong question

The problem with peak oil is that it is the right answer but to the wrong question. As technology improves, there is plenty of conventional crude to be discovered in formerly inaccessible areas such as the ocean floors and the Arctic. Technology also exists to develop unconventional sources (such as bitumen and kerogen) into oil, and to turn natural gas and coal into liquid fuels that can be used to power cars and aeroplanes.
Global hydrocarbon reserves are more than enough to last hundreds of years, long after combusting them has cooked the planet, if fears about global warming prove correct.

Conservatives See Silver Lining in Health Ruling

“Under the government’s theory, Congress could address the diet problem by ordering everyone to buy vegetables,” the chief justice wrote. “That is not the country the framers of our Constitution envisioned.”

Libertarians declared victory. “We finally won a three-decades-long battle over the commerce clause,” John Eastman, a conservative constitutional scholar and a professor at Chapman University, told me hours after the court’s decision.

Yeah, but they can introduce a federal fat and sugar tax.

Keeping Stock – Perhaps even more pertinent, TVNZ7′s existence was never more promoted than its demise now is.

Regularly TV1 and TV2 cross promote, however I cannot remember even once a “Now of TVNZ 7 …”, but when your masters [shareholders] demand the dividend, why would you wish one viewer to leave the commercial channel they are watching?

New Zealand needs an internet channel the equivalent of Vimeo for non-commercial programmes, educational material supplementary to Khan Academy, and worldwide tourism promotionals. Free on part-pay on an iTunes model.

  11. Pete George (17,596) Says:

Keeping Stock – I agree, and that’s a shame, because some form or strong public issue orientated non-commercial broadcasting helps the health of democracy. I’m interested in what can be done in the wake of TVNZ 7′s demise. I think an online network is a good way to start.

It’s also a shame that save TVNZ 7 was overtaken by yet more Labour politicking. I think Clare Curran means well and genuinely wants to retain public broadcasting, but her blaming of Peter Dunne smacks of lashing out at the scapegoat of the time.

    Curran suggested this yesterday:

You’d think that Peter Dunne, the great champion of public broadcasting would have made a bit more of an effort when he negotiated a deal with the National Government late last year.

If he was such a supporter of public broadcasting as he claims to be, why didn’t he make his support for asset sales legislation contingent on ongoing funding for TVNZ7?

    http://blog.labour.org.nz/2012/06/28/funeral-for-tvnz7/comment-page-1/#comment-282409

Her way, any way, and stuff political realism – and despite the fact that saving TVNZ 7 was hardly a Labour priority for the election either.

Many on the left have been demanding Dunne uses his 1/61 vote to do everything THEY want. And if he uses it to do anything they disagree with he gets lambasted with lies.

Labour need to put all MPs through Coalitions 101 before they have to find out how to deal with Green, NZF and Mana demands should they be successful ion 2014.

  12. Pete George (17,596) Says:

Benjamin Easton has made brief appearances on Kiwiblog, famously claiming he “earns” the dole by fighting for causes. But he is proving to be an expensive failure.

Meet the man who’s cost a council $350,000

Council lawyers have written to the solicitor-general trying to block the self-proclaimed “unemployed political busker” from filing endless court proceedings and appeals.

Mr Easton, 52, is a voracious litigant who has taken many court cases against the council over its Manners Mall bus route. He was nearly Tasered for wielding a sledgehammer during a 2010 central city protest.

The social justice campaigner was also the central figure in a protracted anti-capitalist Occupy Wellington demonstration in Civic Square, and more recently he barricaded himself in a Housing New Zealand apartment complex to protest against the forced eviction of tenants.

The move to block him from the courts is considered a “drastic restriction of civil rights” by the Law Commission and “measure of last resort”.

Only seven other people have been declared vexatious litigants since 1965.

But the council says its bid is justified.

A letter to Crown Law from council lawyers Phillips Fox says the council has been subjected to a continuous stream of litigation from Mr Easton and aligned group The City is Ours. His pleadings were often incomprehensible with “no realistic prospect of success”, the letter says.

A judge had described his arguments as “convoluted, long-winded, tortuous and circuitous”. He refused to accept adverse decisions, simply filing new appeals with higher authorities after each successive loss.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/7197210/Meet-the-man-whos-cost-a-council-350-000

This legal course of action should be used very carefully and sparingly, but Easton may be a deserving recipient.

Really? That bloody library must be quite busy, mustn’t it.

He describes himself as an “unemployed political busker.”

I wonder what the results of a drug test would be, if such became WINZ policy, one of these days in the hopefully near future?

I seriously don’t get why Bennett hasn’t done that already, it’s a real no-brainer move. I bet the reason is that the question becomes: what do you do when its positive. And the answer from her WINZ officials would have to be: pay for their addiction treatment. Which would cost millions if not hundreds of millions given the expected numbers. This would happen whether or not the idiots really were addicted or not, they would just pretend to be, just so they could fuck the policy.

But in my view the country would wear the following. If they test positive, they get one chance. A 6 week break, then another test. A second positive, and they get no more benefit, at all, until they test negative. Simple as that. If they have kids, those kids go straight into state care, at the result of the first test.

No addiction treatment is available if its marijuana – addiction treatment is not required for that drug. If its P, they have to spend 6 weeks detained in an army camp in Waiuru. That’s their “therapy.” Then they get a test 6 weeks after they get back home. Another positive, jail time.

Sure. It’d be expensive in the short term. But after a year or two the reduction in the number of people on the benefit would have more than paid for the policy. And as far as the electorate is concerned, far from them thinking ‘oh dear how harsh,’ most of them would think, ‘good on them, about bloody time.’ And the reduction in the numbers on the benefit is not because they were kicked off unduly, but because as soon as someone stops smoking dope, their whole attitude becomes a whole lot more conducive toward getting off their arse and doing something.

I wish that would happen. I know it never will. But it should, and I guarantee it would work.

The survey also showed more than half of New Zealanders approved of gay marriage, while 40.5 per cent opposed it …

It never will be because its dicriminatoty. Not that I care but it discrimnates between drugs. i.e. it cannot and will not show test for alcohol, which is worse that a bit of dope.

The effective answer is to do what Bennet has in progress and put most of them on cards with their budget allocated to the necessary’s. It appears to be working well in aussie and it automatically stops the beneficiary from going to the booze shop as opposed to the supermarket to spend. The supermarket can be controlled because most owners have a huge vested interest in their buisness and will police the use of the cards in a tough way, just as they do alcohol now. If they run the risk of losing the card option from Govt. and maybe huge fines operators will have no suympoathy for beneficiaries.
Sure some bene’s will find a way around but if caught or dobbed in then that will be the end of a benefit.
Bennet needs to extend and toughen up the rules around this process.

Of course nothing stop’s bene’s from committing crime, working for cash or lying on their backs doing what comes naturally and at this point their is now way to elimate that.

You know what though Phil, the inescapable laws of karma surround us all and people like you and Easton despite both of you being raging lefties seem not to understand the deleterious effects of your own actions on your own futures as you both day after day fritter away the gifts you have been given on selfish and fruitless endeavours that add no value indeed detract from others enjoyment of life. And you know what that means eventually, in terms of what goes around comes around.

You possibly imagine that you in whoar and Easton in his litigation are indeed adding value which offsets your otherwise parasitic leeching of the lifeblood of others toil, but at the end of the day that value judgement lies not in your feverish imagination but rather in others hands, you don’t get a say in it at all. A man of wisdom would look around and think to themselves, what do others say about my labours and if everyone says, “not much” then the man of wisdom would change. But no, both you and Easton seem bent on your own self-destruction in your obdurate refusal to take anyone else’s opinions on board. And the more both you and Easton behave arrogantly and obdurately, as both of you continue to do, the less any of us care about the fate you are both letting yourselves in for, somewhere down the track, when you are both, as we all are, held to account for what you have done with your life. It’s never too late to change phil but the fact is neither of you seem to realise how deeply selfish you each are. Perhaps it would help if either of you truly want to see how others see you, then you should each look at how others perceive the other, for you are mirror images. If you want to see how people see you phil, then look at how people see Easton and know, that is how people also see you. It’s not pleasant, is it. And the way to change, is to drop your selfish arrogance. That’s all you have to do. You won’t do that, I know. But that’s all you have to do.

It never will be because its dicriminatoty. Not that I care but it discrimnates between drugs. i.e. it cannot and will not show test for alcohol, which is worse that a bit of dope.

No dope is bad for unemployed because it makes it OK to sit around doing nothing, for months and years on end. That’s why it should be tested.

I do realise alcohol has negatives as well, but fact is, they don’t appear in people until their late 40′s and dope is the big problem for people on the dole in their 20′s and 30′s.

Other_Andy – according to Trump, the Arabs are just doing Obama a favour by lowering oil prices, so that he’ll win the election. After that, you can expect them to skyrocket..

CNBC HOST: Donald, you see the OPEC news this morning? Venezuela wants OPEC to stop pumping more, overproducing, they are saying, that, because Saudi Arabia is pumping above the limits it’s supposed to be doing to help us out a little bit and Venezuela is complaining and right now you’re looking at oil prices at about back around $82.

DONALD TRUMP: That’s still very high, Becky, they should be at $30 if you look at free market. I think Saudi Arabia is doing Obama a big favor. ‘Look, you have to do me a favor, I have to get elected, you can’t do it like you’ve been doing the last three years driving it up to $150′ because that’s where it’s going and I think Saudi Arabia is doing Obama a big fat favor. I think he asked for the favor and prices are coming down, but also the economy’s going bad so maybe it won’t help that much. but as soon as — assuming if Obama got elected, you’re going to see something with oil like you’ve never seen before, it will go through the roof. The favor will be repaid many times over.

Yes, yes, I know it’s Trump, but do you think the above could not happen? I don’t think anything is above Obama doing it now. He is even going to Europe to fund raise over there (seriously!)

Obama’s big overseas fund raising. That’s where he’ll be on July 4th, America’s Independence Day – fundraising in France!

Apparently tiring of US soil as a source of campaign dollars, the Obama campaign is headed overseas — with its celebrity friends in tow. The European Obama campaign starts next week in Paris on July 4 with a reception organized by various fundraising heavy-hitters. Independence Day fundraisers in Paris – now that’s a flag-waving campaign.

The Obama campaign will host events in Geneva, Switzerland in August as part of their “European outreach effort.” George Clooney will headline a fundraiser there, with 150 tickets going for $20,000 per piece. There’s even more to the bargain: if you go as a couple, the second ticket is half-off!

As a married heterosexual couple you can [adopt], as a civil union heterosexual couple you cannot. Why?

You have to understand the deviousness of the left – they want Gay Marriage and adoption and all the rest of it but know that normal people have more common sense than this.

So they start with civil unions, marriage in just about everything but leaving adoption out because that makes people skittish – then a few years later the next step. They allow heterosexuals to have civil unions, even encourage libbies to have them to create the anomalies that they will a few years later fix by making marriage available to all regardless of gender.

We are dealing with evil people here – whose real agenda is the destruction of the family and masculinity itself.

Heh, since the Supreme Court ruling a couple days ago, Romney has raised $5.5 Million dollars in donations.

Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign has raised $5.5 million since the Supreme Court ruled that President Obama’s healthcare law is constitutional.

Romney started raising funds immediately after the decision, and in a message to supporters Friday morning his campaign spokeswoman said he had raised $5.5 million from 55,000 donations.

Obama’s campaign blasted Romney’s team for touting its fundraising success.

Obama outraised Romney after the decision, the president’s reelection team claimed, but they did not share their fundraising numbers.

    http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/235551-romney-campaign-reports-42m-raised-off-healthcare-ruling-

Romney’s team had expected such, and fortified their website for the deluge –

At that point, what had been a flood of traffic on the campaign and RNC websites turned into a deluge.  Within an hour, the campaign had to expand their infrastructure from eight servers to 24 in order to keep the donation pages running — a contingency that might only happen once in a campaign, but for which Team Romney had prepared from the beginning.  Traffic increased to five times what the sites would normally experience, but more critically, donations exploded to something close to twenty times their normal rate.  The infrastructure decisions made two months ago played a critical role in keeping up with demand.  As Moffatt explained, normal web-page hits don’t put a lot of stress on servers, but the secure donation transactions require many times more in server resources.  Donor pages had three to four thousand simultaneous transactions at times in the rush following Romney’s statement, and the sites stayed up to take advantage of them all.

In the end, the Romney and RNC campaign websites had 200,000 unique visitors in the 24-hour period following the Supreme Court decision — with 47,000 donations.  That’s a conversion rate of nearly 25%, far above the normal rate for campaigns. The success wasn’t limited to just the campaign websites, either.  Obama has a 5-year head start on Facebook, and has 27 million followers already, while Romney had 2.1 million before the court decision.  Despite that, Team Romney beat Team Obama on Facebook “engagements” in the first 24 hours after the decision, 493,400 to 464,000, when Obama supporters had more to celebrate.  Romney picked up three times as many supporters in the period as well, 28,713 to 9,600.

    http://hotair.com/archives/2012/06/29/exclusive-inside-story-on-how-team-romney-rode-the-online-scotus-wave/

Apparently the new Egyptian president, Mohammed Morsi, wants to work with the USA to free Omar Abdel Rahman, the so-called “blind sheik” who was the centerpiece of the 1993 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Good luck with that. But what caught my attention was this piece of information about Mr Morsi:

Bear in mind, this guy has a Ph.D from USC, taught at Cal State-Northridge for three years in the early 80s, and has two children who are American by birth. This isn’t a case of a random Arab politician demagoging America by praising some jihadist degenerate who plotted against the U.S. This is a guy who lived here, studied here, worked here, and had kids here. And now he’s looking to spring someone who was even further ahead of the terrorist curve than Bin Laden. Go figure that a Truther would make freeing characters like Rahman a priority.

I guess the “moderation” of living, working and being taught in the West did not take. But then it didn’t with Sayyid Qutb either.

A small non-man who continues to hide behind his nearly adult child as an excuse to avoid taking any responsibility as a member of society and choses to exist by the efforts of others. Living testament to the proposition that irrespective of opportunities that people have in life, there will always be 1% or 2% of the population who will just be abject failures living a completely pointless existence for the entirety of their lives.

  55. Jimmy Smits (243) Says:

France’s new Socialist government is to legalise marriage and adoption for same-sex couples, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said on Friday, reflecting a shift in public attitudes in the majority Catholic nation.

Andrei, however, is under the delusion that Jesus will ride back into France on a white horse carrying the spear of righteousness.

Since Hollande’s Socialists won an absolute majority in parliamentary elections two weeks ago, Andrei, who had opposed the measure under former president Nicolas Sarkozy, can do little to stop it.

“The government has made it an objective for the next few months to work on implementing its campaign commitments on the fight against discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity,” Ayrault’s office said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, the junior minister for families Dominique Bertinotti told French daily Le Parisien that a law on gay marriage and adoption would be passed within a year.

In addition, the government would hold discussions in the autumn on ways of making life easier for trans gender individuals, whose dealings with French administration are often complicated by their change of name and sex.

A law granting full marriage status to gay couples would bring France, which currently provides only for same-sex civil unions, into line with fellow EU members Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden.

It would also mark a profound change in French society, where more than two-thirds of people still describe themselves as Roman Catholic, according to a 2010 survey by pollster Ifop. However, only one of these people, Andrei, actually still believe in fairy tales about talking snakes as fact.

Andrei has been known to disagree with evolution, rather choosing to believe that women were created from a single rib.

Fewer and fewer of them adhere to strict Roman Catholic teachings on sexual issues or back the Vatican’s condemnation of homosexuality. Church attendance has collapsed.

As recently as 2006, surveys indicated that most French were opposed to changing the definition of marriage, but now more than 60 percent support the idea, the pollster BVA said. A majority also favour allowing gay couples to adopt children.

Bahahaha… The one thing I love the most about gay marriage is that it makes people like you sputter and spurt like you’ve got Tourettes. Christians go on and on about how God is love etc. But when gay marriage passes they show their true colours – full of swearing, full of anger, full of hatred.

yep but they don’t stop there do they. and then ofcourse they don’t accept responsibility for their brethern’s behavior inside their institutions and their constant sexist behavoir towards women and others.

    Biggots all.

Hello Colin/Princetipytoe….your description of both Helensville and KKK is both very amusing and totally inaccurate (btw the only place you will find “comprising of” written is in real estate ads; are you a failed real estate agent perhaps?)…Most locals find the “KKK” abbreviation most amusing, and in fact the “KKK Hotel” T shirts are highly sought after when they are available…. black is the the most popular colour….but come on out! Introduce yourself to the fine rural folk who patronise the hotel…I’m sure you will get on fine….for a few minutes….

I did think Phil might receive a typically warm country welcome also…but his derisive references to “Deliverance Country” and descriptions of the locals as “inbreeds” hasn’t gone down very well…They are also not very keen on Phil’s attitude to work…

    Luc,

That is a bit rich, the anti-semite accusing me of hating Palestinians. Unlike you people of the left, I don’t hate my opponents. I may find them misguided, I might disapprove of their tactics, but I certainly don’t hate them.

Think about the definition of the word hate: to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward.  I feel none of those emotions towards the Palestinians.  I do, however, wholeheartedly condem the use of murder and terrorism by those who claim to represent them.  I disapprove of and condemn

the PA‘s extensive “anti-peace” investments, namely its relentless efforts to incite and subsidize terrorism, promote Jew hatred, and effect Israel’s destruction.

    and that

Across the West Bank, dozens of schools, youth camps, sports festivals, and town squares are named after mass murderers of Jews. Effusive praise of these terrorists regularly flows on PA government TV, and in speeches by PA leaders. The PA also spends millions – supplied partly by U.S. aid – as pensions for convicted Palestinian terrorists in Israeli jails.

Repeating the slanders of the Holocaust, PA TV and newspapers regularly castigate Jews as “monkeys and pigs,” “a germ among us,” and a “parasitic worm.” The PA also spreads incendiary allegations such as false claims that Israel poisons Palestinian wells, infects Palestinian men with the AIDs virus, and kidnaps Palestinians to sell their organs.

Unlike Israel, where schools teach tolerance and respect for Arab and Islamic culture, PA TV programs also urge children to become suicide bombers, and demand the extermination of the Jews. Phrases like “they must be butchered and must be killed,” “kill them to the last one,” and “their children will be exterminated” are common fare.

And that is before we even begin to discuss the little habit Hamas has of firing rockets armed with explosives to land at random in civilian areas of Israel.

But I don’t hate them.  I hope they will change.  I hope they will see that hatred of the Jews causes more problems for the Palestinians that it solves.  That that they are the losers, not the Israelis, who long ago worked out how to live in an inclusive and equal society.  Homosexuality is legal in Israel, Luc, but how do you think a gay man would get on in the PA territories?  Or, for that matter, a man who sells his house to a Jew?

So, no, I don’t hate the Palestinians.  Nor do I hate Muslims.  I have had Muslim friends and colleagues and liked them very much.

But it seems that almost every lefty thinks that if we oppose someone’s political viewpoint then we on the right therefore ‘hate’ that person. It is a strange and unfounded belief, but it reigns very strongly among those on the left.

Nor is it understandable to hate David Garrett.  The man has done nothing that is deserving of hate.  Whatever wrongs he may have committed at law have been admitted and a sanction imposed. The sanction imposed by the media that forced him out of Parliament was, indeed, an injustice to him.  It is simply unfounded and irrational ill-feeling that seems to motivate princetipytoes, that is all.  David has been remarkably forthright and upfront about his situation and I, for one, admire him for it.  He even tolerates this taunting with the metaphorical broad shoulders.

So please don’t attribute to me feelings or opinions that are not mine.  Unlike your well-documented (on the comment threads of this august site, no less) anti-semitism, I don’t hate anyone.

Perhaps with the exception of South African rugby referees…

Link between religion and being overweight, NSW academics find

    by: Greg Stolz
    From: The Courier-Mail

    Obese nation – comparing crowds

With the growing trend to obesity we compare music festival crowds in the 70s and 80s to now. Are we bigger?

RELIGION could be fattening, a new Australian study has found.

The study, by two northern NSW academics, has found a link between religion and higher
    body mass index

    (BMI) readings.

They say the “sin of gluttony” might not be as frowned upon by religious people as much as other vices such as drinking, smoking and pre-marital sex – and that many religious celebrations might even encourage over-eating.

The academics noted that people who practised religion at home – for example, by watching TV evangelists – were more likely to consume high-calorie foods and drinks and might prefer a sedentary lifestyle.

So we have plenty of fatties on this blog then.

After a while, the doctor comes out and says “I’m sorry Bill, but we have discovered you have a condition which only allows you another 6 weeks to live”. “But Doctor” Bill replied “I feel great. I haven’t felt better in years. This just can’t be true. Isn’t there anything I can do?” After a moment the doctor said “Well, you might start going down the street to that new health spa and take a mud bath every day”. Excitedly Bill asked “And that will cure me?” “No” replied the doctor “but it will get you used to the dirt”.

A priest decides to take a walk to the pier near his church. He looks around and finally stops to watch a fisherman load his boat. The fisherman notices, and asks the priest if he would like to join him for a couple of hours. The priest agrees.

The fisherman asks if the priest has ever fished before, to which the priest says no. He baits the hook for him and says, “Give it a shot father”. After a few minutes, the priest hooks a big fish and struggles to get it in the boat.

The fisherman says “Whoa, what a big sonofabitch!”

Priest: “Uh, please sir, can you mind your language?”

Fisherman: (THINKING QUICKLY) “I’m sorry father, but that’s what this fish is called – a sonofabitch!”

Priest:”Oh, I’m sorry – I didn’t know.” After the trip, the priest brings the fish to the church and spots the bishop.

Priest: “Eminence, look at this big sonofabitch!”

Bishop: “Please Father, mind your language, this is a house of God.”

Priest: “No, you don’t understand – that’s what this fish is called, and I caught it. I caught this sonofabitch!”

Bishop: “Hmmm. You know. I could clean this sonofabitch and we could have it for dinner.”

So the Bishop takes the fish and cleans it, and brings it to Mother Superior at the convent.

Bishop: “Mother Superior could you cook this sonofabitch for dinner tonight?”

Mother Superior: “My lord, what language!”

Bishop:”No, Sister, that’s what the fish is called – a sonofabitch! Father caught it, I cleaned it, and we’d like you to cook it.

Well, the Pope stops by for dinner with the three of them, and they all think the fish is great. He asks where they got it.

    Priest: “I caught the sonofabitch!”

Bishop: “And I cleaned the sonofabitch!”

Mother Superior: And I cooked the sonofabitch!”

The Pope stares at them for a minute with a steely gaze, but then takes off his hat, puts his feet up on the table, and says, “You know, you fuckers are all right”.

It was time for Father John’s Saturday night bath, and the young nun, Sister Magdalene, had prepared the bath water and towels just the way the old nun had instructed. Sister Magdalene was also instructed not to look at Father John’s nakedness if she could help it, do whatever he told her to do, and pray.

The next morning the old nun asked Sister Magdalene how the Saturday night bath had gone.

“Oh, sister,” said the young nun dreamily, “I’ve been saved.”

“Saved? And how did that come about?” asked the old nun.

“Well, when Father John was soaking in the tub, he asked me to wash him, and while I was washing him he guided my hand down between his legs where he said the Lord keeps the Key to Heaven.”

“Did he now?” said the old nun evenly.

Sister Magdalene continued, “And Father John said that if the Key to Heaven fits my lock, the portals of Heaven would be opened to me and I would be assured salvation and eternal peace. And then Father John guided his Key to Heaven into my lock.”

“Is that a fact?” said the old nun even more evenly.

“At first it hurt terribly, but Father John said the pathway to salvation was often painful and that the glory of God would soon swell my heart with ecstasy. And it did, it felt so good being saved.”

“That wicked old bastard,” exclaimed the old nun. “He told me it was Gabriel’s Horn and I’ve been blowing it for forty years.”

John Smith was the only Protestant to move into a large Catholic neighborhood. On the first Friday of Lent, John was outside grilling a big juicy steak on his grill. Meanwhile, all of his neighbors were eating cold tuna fish for supper. This went on each Friday of Lent.

On the last Friday of Lent, the neighborhood men got together and decided that something had to be done about John. He was tempting them to eat meat each Friday of Lent, and they couldn’t take it anymore. They decided to try and convert John to be a Catholic. They went over and talked to him and were so happy that he decided to join all of his neighbors and become a Catholic. They took him to Church, and the Priest sprinkled some water over him, and said, “You were born a Baptist, you were raised a Baptist, and now you are Catholic.” The men were so relieved, now their biggest Lenten temptation was resolved.

The next year’s Lenten season rolled around. The first Friday of Lent came, and just at supper time, when the neighborhood was setting down to their tuna fish dinner, came the wafting smell of steak cooking on a grill. The neighborhood men could not believe their noses! WHAT WAS GOING ON?

They called each other up and decided to meet over in John’s yard to see if he had forgotten it was the first Friday of Lent. The group arrived just in time to see John standing over his grill with a small pitcher of water. He was sprinkling some water over his steak on the grill, saying,

“You were born a cow, you were raised a cow, and now you are a fish.”

Father Joseph went up to Father Fred one afternoon and said, “I am SICK of all this clean living. Tonight let’s you and me go out and party. We’ll carouse, drink, whatever we want.”
Fred was shocked. “Are you crazy? This is a small town and everyone knows us. Besides, even if they didn’t, they would see our clothes and know we were priests.”
Joe was ready for this. “Don’t be silly. We won’t stay in town, we’ll go into the city where nobody knows us, and we’ll dress just like anyone else.”
In the end, he managed to persuade Fred, and they went out that night and partied like professionals. When they got back home at 5:00 AM, Fred’s face became pale. “I just thought of something,” he said. “We have to confess this.”
Again, Joe was ready. “Relax, I told you, I thought this all out in advance. Tomorrow, you go into church and into the confessional. I will come in my regular clothes and confess, and you absolve me. Then I go put on my garments, you come in and confess, and I’ll absolve you.”
Fred was amazed at Joe’s brilliance. And so, Joseph went in later that morning and said, “Father forgive me, for I have sinned. My friend and I, we’re both young men, and last night we went out and caroused. We became drunk, had carnal knowledge of prostitutes, used foul language, danced to wicked music.”
Fred answered, “God is patient and forgiving, and thus shall I be. Do 5 “Our Father’s” and 5 “Hail Mary’s” and you will be absolved of your sin.
A while later, their places were reversed as Fred came in and confessed everything in detail. There was a short pause, and Joseph answered, “I don’t believe this. And you DARE to call yourself a priest? You will do 500 “Our Father’s,” 500 “Hail Mary’s,” donate all your money for the next month to the church, and go around the church 500 times on your knees praying for God’s forgiveness. Then come back and we’ll discuss absolution, but I make no guarantees.”
“WHAT??!!” Father Fred was shocked. “What about our agreement??”
Joe replied, “Hey, what I do on my time off is one thing, but I take my job seriously.”

A short time later they watched as a Rabbi looked around cautiously and then darted into the house when he was satisfied no one was looking. “Did ya see that, Darby?” Pat asked in shock and disbelief, “Is nothing holy to those Jewish rabbis? I just can`t understand what the world is coming to these days. A man of the cloth indulging himself in sins of the flesh. T`is a shame, I tell ya!” Not much later a third man, a Catholic priest, was seen lurking about the house, looking around to see if anyone was watching, then quietly sneaked in. “Oh no, Darby, look!” said Pat, removing his cap and crossing himself, “One of the poor girls musta died….”

As soon as she had finished convent school, a bright young girl named Lena shook the dust of Ireland off her shoes and made her way to New York where before long, she became a successful performer in show business. Eventually she returned to her home town for a visit and on a Saturday night went to confession in the church, which she had always attended as a child. In the confessional Father Sullivan recognized her and began asking her about her work. She explained that she was an acrobatic dancer, and he wanted to know what that meant. She said she would be happy to show him the kind of thing she did on stage. She stepped out of the confessional and within sight of Father Sullivan, she went into a series of cartwheels, leaping splits, handsprings and backflips. Kneeling near the confessional, waiting their turn, were two middle-aged ladies. They witnessed Lena’s acrobatics with wide eyes, and one said to the other: “Will you just look at the penance Father Sullivan is givin’ out this night, and me without me bloomers on!”

A Protestant died and was sent to hell. A few seconds after
arriving, the Devil appeared in a cloud of smoke and said,
“Hey Bill, Welcome to Hell! Here’s the keys to your Porsche.
    Let’s go visit your beachhouse!”
Before the befuddled man could answer, the Devil whisked him
into the Porsche and off they went. Arriving at the
beachhouse, the man could only stare in awe at the
magnificent mansion before him. The Devil handed the keys to
the mansion and the sportscar to the man whose mouth was
hanging open in amazement and said, ” Well, Bill, I’ll check
up on you in two weeks. Enjoy!” And as suddenly as he had
    appeared, the devil disappeared.
His incredulity fading somewhat, Bill went into the mansion
and found everything to be first class with running servants,
an indoor pool … the whole nine yards. For two weeks, he
    lived like a king.
After two weeks had elapsed, the Devil suddenly appeared and
asked the man, “Well, Bill, how is Hell treating you? Great
place, isn’t it! By the way, I have another client to see so
I can’t stay. Any problems? We aim to please down here in
    Hell.”
Bill replied that he certainly was having a grand time and
that he’d not been prepared for such royal treatment. In
fact, he had been expecting Dante’s Inferno or something
    similar.
The Devil laughingly replied “No, Bill. Those are just old
wives tales. This is the way Hell really is! Great place,
    isn’t it?”
Bill then said that everything was fine except that at
night, he’d been hearing these terrible blood-curdling
screams emanating from the nearby island out in the ocean.
This was so disturbing that he’d had to take an occasional
sleeping pill. He then leaned over and whispered to the
Devil, “Tell me really. Is that what’s in store for me?
    After all, this IS Hell.”
The Devil could not stop laughing at this and with tears
streaming down his eyes, he said “No, you’ve got it all
wrong. Those people on the island are the Catholics. They

    Phil,

why don’t you as an anti-abortion christian…support a living wage/social-support/approval for those raising children on their own..?

My husband was speaking to a doctor at a men’s group he went to tonight who had been working in the UK for a while. He said things had gotten so bad with the benefit system over there that he was seeing 4th generation patients whose families had never worked.

Living wages (benefits actually) mean that there becomes less and less incentive for raising children with a partner, because the state steps in, and it makes it likely that the children raised this way aren’t going to be able to make it in the world themselves because they’ve never seen their mother and father together and they’ve not experienced anything other than the government looking after them.

Anyone on a benefit really needs to be very aware that they are living on charity, and not expect to have it as a right.

“…if only on the grounds that such a prospect would deter many women from aborting….”

..you are avoiding the question about preventing many of those 17,500 abortions each year..

(do you not understand the question..?..is that why you seem unable to answer it..?..)

..is that how you would like it..?

In my ideal world, young women would not have sex with every joe, dick and harry and a few besides and whoops, I’m pregnant. They’d be a lot more discerning and wait until some nice young man promised to look after them till death do they part before they took their clothes off. ie they wouldn’t get pregnant and need to choose between abortion or dpb. That’s my ideal world.

..so back here in the real world…

..is that a living wage and strong social-support/approval would mean many of those seventeen and a half thousand abortions would not be happening…

..and abortions are what you are purporting to oppose..

Since 7pm I have been making dinner, eating it, doing the dishes, making a banana cake and doing a bit of commenting on the side. So, no avoiding the question as such, just not particularly interested in answering it on your terms.

The problem with your question is that you are setting up a scenario in which nothing changes except for abortions being made illegal. What you fail to understand is that in such a world where abortions are made illegal, there would be a whole lot of other changes as well, such as a huge focus on reducing premarital sex which creates babies in the first place.

Each case of an “accidental” pregnancy would have to be dealt with independently. I would never envisage a world where women would have to give their babies up every single time.

phil your whole argument is based on this fallacy from your post above:

..just why it is then..that on a real/factual-level you support political-policies and attitudes..

..that drive many women to abort..

..largely because they cannot face the guaranteed poverty/stigmatising that is the lot of the sole-parent forced to rely on state support..

Where’s your evidence that women abort specifically for that reason phil? If they don’t then your entire argument collapses like a house of cards, doesn’t it. Yes, it does.

So apart from your own personal assumption where’s your evidence? And don’t forget, your argument is suggesting it drives “many women” to abort “largely because…” so don’t bother citing any research unless it has those particular attributes phil. Citing research that suggests it might be a peripheral reason, one amongst many, won’t cut it.

So go ahead phil. We’re waiting. Well, c’mon.

all in yr own words..eh phil..?

    ..really…?

Oh yes. Definitely. Why the fuck would anyone abort when they have the DPB? Perhaps you’re just a moron phil but women actually think abortion is a big deal. They don’t kill the living thing inside them on a mere whim. It takes a lot of thought before they do it and many of them suffer for years afterward and they never, ever forget. It’s not just: oh well, flush it and forget it. No it’s not like that at all. Don’t you understand that you moron?

So given this FACT, it’s natural isn’t it that those considerations come way before mere economics. Economics doesn’t even factor into any sort of equation unless you’re a particularly stupid or inhuman mother. Fancy a woman aborting her own baby simply because the DPB doesn’t pay enough money. I daresay phil that if you walked down to your local abortion clinic and asked the women there whether or not they were doing it for the reason YOU think they’re doing it, they’d knee you in the balls and throw you into the street for being a fucking stupid mental.

..are you really unable to see that..?
