A superb idea

July 13th, 2012 at 11:00 am by David Farrar

Stuff reports:

The mayor of a German town has sparked controversy by introducing special “easy” spots for .

Mayor Gallus Strobel, from the Black Forest town of Triberg, told Germany’s Spiegel magazine he introduced the spots because men were better at parking than women.

The women’s spaces, which are marked by female symbols, are reportedly better lit and wider, while the men-only spots have concrete pillars to negotiate and can only be reversed into.

Strobel told the magazine that women were welcome to attempt parking in the men-only spots, but that “men are, as a rule, a little better at such challenges”. He denied accusations of sexism, pointing out that there were 10 women-only spots in the carpark compared to only two men-only spots.

This is an excellent idea. I think the Wellington City Council should copy this initiative.  Just as we have special parks for disabled drivers, I think special parks for women is an excellent initiative.

Should have special parking for SUVs…as far away from the entrance as possible!

What about special LICENCES for women who drive big 4WD’s which they are scared of, and thus drive very badly? Seriously! Next time you are in a supermarket carpark, and you see a woman in a big 4WD, just sit and watch…

Not needed. Several years ago I witnessed a female driver do an immaculate three point turn with trailer. Some nearby workman gasped with amazement. Mind you, she was brought up on a farm in the Manawatu and was adept at operating farm machinery. However if she can, then surely others can.

I think there are a whole series of special areas needed:
    1. Ordinary cripples – have the sticker on the car but jump out like anyone else (propbably a bad back or something)
    2. The colour blind
    3. Women
    4. Asians
    5. Asian women
    6. Nursing mothers
    7. Genuine cripples
    8. Blind drivers
    9. Old people

whatever you do, avoid being anywhere near Kelburn normal school at just before or after school. with the number of mums in SUVs that seem to adhere to the driving theory of “if i cannot see it in my mirrors it does not exist” i am surprised there are not daily fatalities.

the best thing about no longer living on upland rd was being able to avoid the thunderdome of mums in SUVs on a daily basis.

Parcelling parks off into different groups just makes it harder to find parks. I can understand marking parks as being for “wusses” – and then men can decide whether or not they want the derision of their friends, but if there are no other parks available, why could you not park there?

Triberg im Schwarzwald is small, but it’s a nice looking pace and it is big on several things:
    – tunnels and looping and climbing of the Black Forest Railway (Schwarzwaldbahn)
Triberg Falls, one of the highest in Germany
    – the world’s biggest Cuckoo clock

And there’s the Tunnelfahrten auf der Schwarzwaldbahn (there is sometimes humour in German).

Lol, I always get a place in a Wellington parking building, simply because I back the Commodore into the space with the pillar – it’s always empty.

@barry – please dont give anybody any silly ideas. Or next minute there will be a claim to the Waitani Tribunal for 15% of parking spaces to be designated Maori only. I am sure there is something in the Maori version of the treaty which can be bent to mean something like it.

My wife is a very good driver, with the exception of backing trailers. But being a woman she has mastered the art of conning the guy at Bunnings or the landscape place into manouvering the trailer for her. When she goes into one of these places they just automatically assume that she can’t back a trailer and are more than willing to do it for her!

Whereas if a man admits he can’t back a trailer in a hardware store, it’s “hand back your red-blooded Kiwi MALE card mate, ya don’t deserve it.” Luckily I can back a trailer … now.

@graham – I got my 16 year old son to back the trailer back into the garage after getting some hay the other weekend. It is a big trailer (8×5 bed). He did remarkably well and got it dead straight in with one go. He reckons it was because of some playstation game he had that involved backing a trailer. Maybe he was right. All those wasted hours were maybe not so wasted. Now when the zombie apocalypse comes he had better be doing one shot head shots every time.

Would be better to just ban automatic transmissions in SUVs & 4x4s in my opinion. The last thing we should be doing is making it “easy” to drive that kind of vehicle. It is putting too much destructive power into the hands of hopelessly unskilled little girls who have no idea how to stay in control of it…

My german friend says this is bad reporting:

    “it’s the other way round.
The PR savy mayor of Triberg has marked especially difficult parking spots to be ‘men-parking-spots’…

Especially marked Female-parking-spots have been around for yonks in germanLand and are usually close to the exit/excalator/elevator in bigger cities… but they are usually wider too. yes. nothing new though.”

Driving and parking a car however is not one of them hence this post is outrageous. Not just this year did not Whaleoil have to clean up the mess from one of your attempts at parking??
