Russell Lupines in bloom along the road to Lake Alexandrina. Lake Tekapo in the background, South Island New Zealand. Photography by Sarah Sisson.
Welcome to another Wednesday morning – July is rapidly evaporating – I must admit that I’m looking forward to a respite from all this fog and frost though, roll on August…..
This image was made by my lovely and talented wife, Sarah. It has just been featured as a double page spread New Zealand Geographic’s latest publication – Southern Exposure - which is well worth purchasing if you are a fan of New Zealand imagery (not just landscape photos either).

Sadly not everyone sees them as something to enjoy.
Vote:Some in authority spend thousands spraying them along state highways in the Mckenzie country and on the Arthurs pass road as examples but broome and gorse are left to flourish.

I know @gravedodger! However, there is a little bronze plaque in Lake Tekapo Village dedicated to the lady (environmental terrorist?) who spread the seeds. Personally, I love the colour they bring to the landscape each spring…..
I wonder if they are nitrogen fixing like some other lupins? – could provide an argument for retaining them if so….

I’m afraid if I had my way they would be gone. Not as bad as wilding pines but the potential to spread is there.

Few years back we racked up to Tekapo from AUK and found there was no bedding in the batch. Chased it up at the local PO. The woman who worked there lended us some bedding out of the goodness of her heart. I’d love to have thanked her. All I can recall is (sorry, in case no one told her before) she had cross-eyes. So I guess I want to say thank you, and well, apologise for mentioning, well the eye thing. But thanks lady anyway.
