Wednesday Wallpaper | 4 July
July 4th, 2012 at 9:34 am by Todd SissonWelcome to the Wednesday Wallpaper – your midweek, scenic seque towards Chthoniid‘s wonderful Friday Photo.
Each week Sarah or I will be sharing an image from our New Zealand photography portfolio. Each photo will be available for free download as a high resolution (2048px) wallpaper image – suitable for the new iPad or your PC desktop.
First up is Lake Matheson at sunset, truly one of New Zealand’s most stunning vistas. This image was made from Reflection Island on the Matheson walkway on a summer’s evening. The afternoon breeze dropped off, as it often does, right on sunset revealing this mirror reflection of the Southern Alps.
You can download the wallpaper here
Thanks to David for this opportunity to share a little of our country’s beauty with the Kiwiblog audience. Enjoy!
Cheers – Todd Sisson

Beautiful. It’s never been that flat whenever I’ve been there…

hehe @helmet – you are not wrong – I thought I’d go easy on you guys first up – next week I’ll dish up something more challenging!
@RRM – yes, it is a long drive to see a windy lake shrouded in cloud

Wonderful shot Todd, I wonder how many times you had to travel there to get it
It’s got a lovely symmetry that pulls your eyes towards the mountains in the background. Lovely sense of depth to it also.

Great pic Todd, I don’t care if there are a few other variants around, this is a top shot and is appreciated.
Reflections are easy enough, if you’re persistent and patient, or lucky. But composition and light (great peak highlights here) can still make a pic special.

It only looks easy. I doubt very much you’d achieve this level of polish unless you are a professional.
Nice composition and execution.

That so makes me want to go there!

As a keen West Coast landscape photographer, I think this is a pretty nice capture of Matheson, I really like that it is at sunset instead of the usual sunrise from this location.
I got some excellent shots from Cook flat while working down there at the end of summer, South Westland is an absolutely incredible place.
I have found my own “secret” landscape locations in Westland, and for anyone interested in landscape photography, if you do a little bit of home work you will find some amazing locations and perspectives not often captured.
And DPF, if you haven’t yet been to the Coast for a properlook, I think you will be amazed at what you find here. To appreciate it fully you really need to spend a while here though, it is a very big region to explore.

Ye. That does apply to much of the South Island, but the West Coats has it’s own unique attractions. The three that stand out for me:
1. Helicopter over Fox Glacier
2. White heron (kotuku) tour – jet boat down river with ducks flying a metre from the boat, transfer to a rainforest cruise to the kotuku and spoonbill nesting sites.
3. Forest walks in the Karamea area (Oparara Valley) to caves and archways.

My favourite South westland “discovery” was Gillespie’s Beach, near Fox Glacier. The beach is covered in coloured stones and driftwood, and there is a perfect view of Mt Cook. It’s pretty cool being able to sit in the sun on the beach AND see the country’s tallest mountain.

Thanks all!
Yes there is quite literally a lifetime of exploring in South Westland.
@davidp – Gillespies is incredible – this is an amazing beach – down by Knights Point, south of Fox. http://bit.ly/LQqBoX penguins nearby too: http://bit.ly/LQqFFb
@pete George – Alex Knob walk from Franz Josef is almost up there with a helicopter flight – but not quite! This shot was taken during a full moon http://bit.ly/LQr6zl @helmet may be interested in that one – it was in no way too easy to acquire

Great work Todd. Been enjoying all your shots on your website. Some real stunners there make me want to flush my camera down the nearest toilet
