Friday Photo: 10 August

Two pics today because they really belong as a paired set.  They’re of the NZ scaup or papango, one of our smallest duck species and a very adept diver.  The male is darker, and both sexes have a distinct yellow eye.

As always, clicking the image will bring up the larger, higher resolution pic.

    Are these Mallards and therefore Labour Leader and Deputy Leader? Where’s a Basset when you need one?

    The first time I saw these little black ducks was in Wakatipu by the Earnslaw wharf in Queenstown, on my first ever trip around the South Island as a kid. The South Island was like a whole new country to me, and Queenstown was the impossibly pretty, ultra glamorous jewel at the extreme south of it, the furthest place from home my parents had ever taken me. And these pretty little satin black ducks were a gorgeous looking exotic bird I’d never seen the likes of before. They were almost as cool as the Keas at Arthur’s Pass.

    Then we went home to Rotorua and I started noticing the little black ducks everywhere… curious!

    @RRM

    They are quite engaging to watch- I’m impressed at how long they can stay submerged.

    Their distribution is a little odd. They’re often abundant where they are located, but they seem to be found in less places than I expect.

    You only need a small orange to flavour these chaps superbly. :)

    Yeah, they’re kind of enthralling to watch.
    Took some time to get shots of both sexes in a frontal view, but it was one of those cases where I didn’t mind waiting :)

    These are amazing to watch underwater at the Queenstown ‘aquarium’ thingee on the waterfront – they are like rockets. Cool shots.
