A great ceremony

September 20th, 2012 at 6:32 am by David Farrar

I was a grateful guest of ANZ at the ceremony last night for . Actually it was for really for the entire Olympic team, and all the medalists – which was nice. Of course Valerie getting her gold medal was the highlight, and we were told it was the first time an Olympic gold medal has ever been presented in NZ. NZOC Patron, Sir Jerry Mateparae did the presentation.

Adams looked fantastic – glowing and proud. The Cloud was packed to the brim, and I think they also had some people outside. After the ceremony, ANZ put on some pretty cool fireworks which included the Olympic rings.

Probably still not quite the same as getting the gold medal at the Olympic stadium, but hopefully this came close for Adams.

Funniest moment of the night for MC John Hawkesby having to pronounce the name of of the Tongan Royal Lupe’oloHalaevalu TupouMoheofo Virginia Rose Tuita daughter of HRH Princess SaloteMafile’sPilolevu Tuita, and then following that with Len Brown whom he thanked for his name :-)

If there have to be cheaters on juice around the place ruining the competition, I’m glad it was her second gold medal that turned out like this, and not her first one in 2008.

Thank you Val. You are a neat lady, a wonderful ambassador, great role model for what hard work delivers.

When her time is over (as happens with all athletes) all this over the top publicity will leave her seriously depressed and she will turn into a victim.

This sort of crap is media pushed over the top hype.

    Crazy stuff.

I look forward to the day when TV’s come out with programmable ability so that I can kill adverts and anything else that has had its time – so that any but that has the words “olympic” or ‘Valerie” will be muted automatically. Id have programmed in ‘Olympics’ the day after they finished.

You haven’t meantioned ANZ enough. Judging from the backdrop, it should be mentioned every second word. For #ANZ example #ANZ a #ANZ sentence #ANZ should #ANZ look #ANZ like #ANZ this #ANZ.

What a bunch of miserable, sad and whinging bastards. Please make our day and give us an idea of your life’s achievements. Doubt if there is enough for a oneliner amongst the lot of you negative tosspots.

    Dear Sonny,

Care to point us to “bogan rantings” – think youll find they are media quotes, not from her.

Met her for the first time when she presented my eldest son with his Weetbix Tri medal a couple of years back. Was wearing a Kepler Ultra shirt, we got talking about it. She is genuinly lovely, humble and with the intensity you would expect from someone at the top of their game.

But then Im sure the gloomy fucking Eyeor’s round here will find fault with that too. Fuck me, why not go off and become socialists you lot, that’ll cheer you up no end.

Great achievement by a great athlete – but both the Olympic committee and major sponsor are a pack of morons – nothing but self interest – For F’s sake even the posy of flowers had streamers with the Sponsor name all over it – Why couldnt they leave a skerrick of relaity about the event – I didnt see sponsor logos on the flowers at the ‘real Olympics’
    Assholes the lot of them

If you don’t want to watch something on TV, don’t whynge about it. Change the channel. You don’t need a special TV to do it for you.

For fuck’s sake you sound like a whiney bitch.

As for the rest of you negative bastards, Valerie did very well to get her gold medal. In fact, I’d wager that not one of you here has been at the top of the field for anything, let alone an olympic sport.

Lots of insecure people on this thread.

Not being impressed with someones talk does not mean you do not respect her achievements and revel in the glory and respect she has brought to New Zealand and her people.

    ‘I want the medal sterilized’

    Crass

Pushed by the media of course but every public figure needs to learn the effects of that.

Val Adams is a great athlete but for Christ’s sake the media hype around this has been completely over the top.
A gushing report on Stuff this morning (that looked like it was written by a ten year-old) called this “possibly the greatest medal ceremony ever” due to the 2500 fans who were present. Never mind that most Olympic Stadiums usually pack in about 80,000..
Then we had to endure a positively salivating Phil Gifford (who is coincidentally writing a biography on Dame Val) on TV last night calling her “New Zealand’s greatest ever athlete”- Which anyone over the age of 14 (or with any sporting knowledge whatsoever) will tell you is utter bullshit. She is not fit to lace Peter Snell’s runners…
I just think this whole thing has been done to death. Adams finished second at the Olympics, behaved like a petulant child after being soundly beaten, and was then promoted to first. The subsequent elevation of Val Adams to Sainthood is just a little over the top in my mind..

Val is a fantastic athlete, but it was pointed out on the radio yesterday that her career best throw is only just within the top 200 women’s shotput throws of all time. So it’s important to keep things in perspective.

I am looking forward to seeing what she will do in the future.

Yeah but Gump ALL the other female shotputters in History who have thrown further than Saint Val are clearly drug cheats. New Zealand athletes are the only squeaky clean ones in the World…

Adams lost me when she made those comments about sterilising the medal. I’m sorry, but that is a textbook sore winner. Nothing gracious at all. What a rotten example to our young aspiring athletes she is. She can get fucked, and so can all the gushing fools who think anyone cares about an Olympic shotput medal.

I disagree with what you say but will defend your right to say it. But I dont have to agree with the utterings of a couple of miserable sods who seems to have started the day with the wife kicking you out of bed.

This woman is a well trained person who throws a metal ball around. Yes she has done very well – but shes not God.
