“The coach did it”
September 12th, 2012 at 10:00 am by David FarrarStuff reports:
Disgraced Belarusian shot putter Nadzeya Ostapchuk has handed back her Olympic Gold medal as her former coach admits to doping her food without her knowledge.
Without her knowledge?
I think all Kiwis know the two words response to that.
Yeah Right!

There is a lot of naivety shown in the commentary around this. Her drug regime would have been overseen by doctors and others. It would have been carefully managed and sponsored by the State. This country was part of the communist bloc. I doubt she would have had any choice in the matter. Athletes in those places do not have the freedoms enjoyed by those condemning her.
Drug use is common place in high level competition. The real issue is why the doctors did not cycle her drugs properly, to avoid detection, the way the other athlete’s doctors did. I am sure that is what is really being investigated in Belarus.

Kea
“the way the other athlete’s doctors did.”
Vote:Which other athlete was that?
Anyone know how this drug is usually administered?
Sprinkled on brekkie does not sound convincing.

While there are many former Communist bloc nations competing only a couple of them, Russia and Belarus, are still essentially dictatorships. Belarus has been known as the last dictatorship in Europe since Serbia went democratic.

I think its plural not singular.
I know I am going to be pissed on from all sides for saying what I did, given NZ’s naive view of sports. But I do stand behind the comments made.

“Sprinkled on brekkie does not sound convincing.”
Vote:Neither does “I took a couple of puffs on a friend’s inhaler” but when an All Black used this as an excuse a few years ago we accepted it immediately and without question….

@Longknives – you’re referring to Joe McDonnell 9 years ago? His story was a lot more believable than this absolute joke – try comparing apples with apples sometime……
McDonnell would have been ok to play in that game if he had declared that he had used an inhaler before the game, but he forgot.
Given that other players are allowed to play have used those inhalers (as long as they declare them), I think you are scraping the bottom of the barrel if thats the only argument you have against an All Black and doping (one who played 8 tests, most of them off the bench).

I’ve also blogged on this, including a photograph of Ostapchuk and Adams after a previous event where the normal positions had evenuated. The changes to Ostapchuk’s appearance and physique were so marked that they could not have been achieved by a sprinkling of steroids just a few days before the Olympics. I am also hugely sceptical that they could have been achieved without Ostapchuk’s knowledge or even her active participation. It would also explain why she has not lodged an appeal.
On the plus side, she has handed back the gold medal that she cheated to win. At least Valerie Adams will have the satisfaction of receiving the actual medal that she was cheated out of last month.

One wonders if she became suspicious when she noticed that her deep-veined, purple-helmeted sparton of love was enlarging. That and the hairy back.

Heh Heh- Dare to mention any incident of foul play or cheating by the ‘God-like’ All Blacks and people get fiercely defensive..
Vote:Kind of proves my point that as sports fans we are rather one-eyed and immature.
Oh and seanmaitland- Anton Oliver.
September 12th, 2012 at 12:09 pm
Longknives – at least get your facts right – Anton Oliver had nothing to do with an inhaler – your original argument was completely invalid.

No you asked me to name another incident of an All Black failing a drugs test. And I did….(Seperate from the inhaler incident)
Are you seriously claiming that our high and mighty All Blacks are ‘squeaky clean’ while the rest of the professional sports world is rife with doping and corruption??
Vote:Wow- take the eyepatch off dude…

A few of you may benefit from reading this. It is about cycling, but applies to many other sports, like Rugby for example (or do you really think the modern AB’s just look like that from diet and few weights?)
