This week we return to South Westland for a view of the Southern Alps from the verdant pastures surrounding Fox Glacier village. Fox is another of my favourite locations in NZ, not just for photography – it has a great ‘vibe’, well worth a visit….

It’s a special spot alright, if I had the choice of going to the Gold Coast or South Westland for a week, South Westland would win every time.
I would be taking my photography gear, and fishing gear, you would not believe the size of some of the trout and salmon down there, it is still one of NZs best kept secrets.

One of the best days of my life was spent down there with a fly fishing guide who promised I would catch at least 20 trout during the day. Well I caught at least 25 of which 7 were trophy size and I’m no great fly fisher! Truly remarkable day and something I will never forget.

Vote:Have been down the “coast” only a few times – still have yet to enjoy this scenery in similar weather.
Will be trying again later this year on a ‘road trip’ in the caravan.

hey thanks folks – nice to hear that I am not the only Westland fan out there.
@pete george – not being American I am none of the above. If I was American, I suspect that all of the above constituencies would (mis)label me a communist or bleeding heart socialist pinko. Having said that, I do have a thing for gun-toting simpleton women – after all, if you turn around from where this photo was taken you can see Russia….. lock n’ load!
