Whale appointed Truth Editor

October 31st, 2012 at 1:59 pm by David Farrar

has announced:

Internet shock jock goes mainstream

“Wellington, you’re on notice – be afraid.”

New Zealand’s number 1 news and opinion blogger has today been appointed Editor of the Truth.

Truth is New Zealand’s last remaining Kiwi-owned national newspaper which this year turns 125 years old.

Slater has been brought on board to fundamentally change the way newspapers deliver to their audiences. Newspapers worldwide are in decline, due, Slater says, to a tired old business model that no longer works.

“We’re not going to spend $4 million on a paint job and then deliver the same tired old paid-for shit.

“Most of the media in this country is weak, and it’s paid for. The integrity in news went ages ago.”

Slater is adamant that the backbone of New Zealand – the people who work – are not getting a fair shake from government or the system. He aims to change that.

“Each and every one of us has got an investment in NZ Inc, and the majority of the people in charge of the place are taking the piss out of our investment.

“We’re going to keep the buggers honest. There’s no better disinfectant than sunlight.

“To use a tired phrase – if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear, so Wellington, you’re on notice – if you’re having a lend, we’re coming for you!”

Changes will be rolled out over a period of months and will include both print and a 24 hour news website to support the paper. Slater aims to alter the approach to news presentation significantly.

“We took the pulse of the nation, and it had nearly bloody died.

“No bastard wants to read old news – they can get that online. We’ll be more of a views-paper that promises to deliver REAL news, REAL opinion.

“The people are numb from the eyes down with the diet of PR’d crap they get now. I will not do it to them anymore – it’s not right.

“I assure you – the little paper that could still can!”

There will be further announcements regarding contributors and editorial direction.

Slater’s first issue will hit newsstands on Thursday 8 November 2012.

Congratulations to Cam. That is a huge vote of confidence in his abilities. He hasn’t become most read blogger by accident, and he will bring his tenacity to his new role. A blogger becoming a print (and web) editor might be a first – at least for New Zealand.

I’m looking forward to the first issue..

That’s a very fine tribute to New Zealand’s most read blogger from New Zealand’s second most read blogger DPF; good on ya :D

And if anyone has the sheer bloody-mindedness to carry this off, it’s Cameron Slater. Roll on next Thursday.

A gutsy move. There’s potential for print (and broadcast) media to to benefit from growing online experience rather than just trying to adapt themselves and their own, and Cam has more relevant online experience than virtually anyone.

It’s a big challenge but has the potential to be an innovator in the news media revolution. Hopefully the result will be more real news and views, and it will shake up the too often self interested, self obsessed relationships between politicians and news outlets.

If it works it could contribute significantly to better media models – and better politics. Truth with real honesty and openness.

Fairfax sold Truth about 10 years ago because they did not want to be associated with so tawdry a publication. It’s presently owned by Mathew Horton of the former Herald Horton family.

Its only ads are for prostitutes and brothels, IIRC.

With Whale running it, I will make a point of hunting it down. I haven’t seen it in years.

    Brilliant!

Congrats to Cameron Slater on his appointment. Its long overdue that we have a counter to the tired, left leaning, hack ‘journalism’ that currently masquerades as our print media.

Like many others, I haven’t purchased / read Truth for many years, but I’ll certainly give it a shot now Whale is at the helm.

Meanwhile the Herald and The Dominion and the rest of the mainstream media will go on trying to feed us the same old left wing garbage. Like The Guardian in the UK, its all about the political message rather than the business model.

Propagandizing left wing scum posing as objective journalists. Even Pravda today is more respected.

Fuck em, they’re all just NZ journolisters who probably check in daily with the admitted Marxist Brian Edwards to see if what they have written is OK for publication.

The “traditional” outlets will undoubtedly turn to “D” in the playbook. Denigrate, decry, dissemble, dish dirt, dis, duck the truth, …… what have I missed? So Whale had better raise the deflector shield until they tire of focussing on him personally.

Just like the Labour Party, they will not look in the mirror and take an honest look at themselves – if they did there would be a lot of puking going on.

Apparently one of the Horton’s owns it. Which means they probably know what they’ve done. I haven’t read it for years but the editorial content used to be lefty tabloid. While Cam’s style is sometimes somewhat that, he’s got a lot of editing on his hands if he wants to transform it into an Investigate editorial line which is possibly where they plan to take it.

Congratulations to Cam. With the MSM dominated by a bunch of wishy washy commentators (put Soper at the top of the list), and liberal lefty pressure groups, there is a real opportunity for plain spoken centre right opinions that fit with the way Waitakere Man sees the world. Cam has built up a formidable online audience because he has demonstrated integrity; he does not cuddle up to politicians or commercial interests (except where there are hunting freebees).

A classic move by all parties – shows why Truth has survived so long. Good luck to Whale – I suspect he will do this really well.

I hope this does not mean Truth’s original features wll be reinstated? Especially the divorce notices, that used to list who has been shagging who? Compulsory reading when I was a teenager, with little purpose other than to expose human weaknesses and embarrass a whole lot of good, though arguably weak, people and their families.

If its going back this way in 2012, perhaps it would save a lot of newsprint by listing those who are NOT having a sly encounter, rather than the others.
