But at least we can ‘depend’ on JetStar – according to the Hoorald, they’ve just cancelled a Christmas Eve flight from Melbourne to Auckland, for ‘safety problems’… and some passengers are rightly pissed because they’ve been offered an alternate flight that arrives in Auckland on….. Boxing Day!

@ Longknives – at least it seems that Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson may have taken in some of what Martin Crowe suggested. What they showed yesterday (and I only saw about 45 minutes, just before the tea break) was disciplined batting, playing straight and knuckling down to the job.

It might not have been pretty, and it might not have been entertaining for anyone other than the cricketing purists. But it was just the kind of application that this blogger has been demanding of our test players. It was good too to see Taylor leading from the front. In the long term, it might be a good plan to relieve him of the ODI and T20 captaincy and just let him focus on leading the test side. He is the best batsman in the team, and at 28 could potentially lead the test side for another five to seven years.

I see there are only two comments on that Robertson post on Red Alert.

Yes, that’s interesting. The fact that the party vote campaign comment is allowed suggests it might just be a lack of interest at Red Alert now, apart from occasional critical visitors and a handful of regular defenders there’s not much interest there.

But it was notable that Robertson did a couple of posts (he rarely ventures there), and it has been noticed that he has acknowledged The Standard despite Shearer’s dissing of anonymous blogs as ‘nonsense’.

Is the leadership trying to reach out to the activists without Shearer being seen to have changed his mind about blogs?

Or is Robertson trying to build personal brownie points?

Keeping Stock- The best thing we could do is ‘relieve’ all our players from the debacle that is T20 ‘Hit and Giggle’.
Big money or not the skill base of New Zealand’s top cricketers has eroded dramatically since they became involved in this meaningless slogfest circus.
T20 has no skill factor- it is purely unrefined slogging. Watching our obnoxious gum-chewing top order (self-professed T20 ‘Specialists’) trying to play ‘ramp shots’ and cross the line heaves in the first session of a Test match is embarrassing and insults the legacy of the great test batsmen that have gone before them.
Oh for a Bruce Edgar, a John Wright or an Andrew Jones to knuckle down and bat for a day or two…
Now all we get is the self-professed ‘Master Blaster’ McCullum (a VERY poor man’s excuse for Viv Richards) trying to belt everything out of the park in the first session on day one.
For the love of the game! Can’t New Zealand offer Hashim Amla residency or something?

Ahh so retribution is served. I’d be curious to know how compelling the evidence was against this guy. Shame he couldn’t have been captured and tried in a more civilized manner.

Still, the West seems quite comfortable with extra-judicial assassination on the whole – so long as it’s only Dirty Ay-rabs on the receiving end.

anyone else run into the sad losers trying to shoehorn their politics into peoples social events over the weekend.

we swung past the hobbit market and there were two saddos trying to annoy everyone with their clipboard, but from the brief time i saw them they got no traction, and in fact most people seemed to think that sad losers wearing suits with clipboards on a sunday must have been the information desk, so they were having to field queries about where the toilets or ATMs were.

also got accosted in Jville, where one of the losers was outside the mall annoying people, this lot had also decided to deface lots of public property with their sad little home made signs, i helped out by putting them in the appropriate receptacle.

you have to wonder about the sense of entitlement or superiority that leads someone to think that a nice summer day, when families are out enjoying themselves is the right time to try and barge your politics down their throat.

the greens and labour have had nearly a year since they lost round 1 (the election) on this minor issue, and they still cannot get enough public support no matter how much they violate the spirit of ‘citizens initiated referendum’ or how much money they spend trying to get signatures. its beyond pathetic.

Further to what Manolo and Viking 2 are saying about national – they appear to have abdicated doing anything meaningful about fixing the economy. Our unemployment rate is the higher since 1999. My understanding is that over 25% of our youth are unemployed. So on the economic front the national government is not doing well.

On the social front they appear to have abdicated governance in favour of the rainbow wing of the Labour Party. They are allowing gay marriage and very shortly gay adoption to become the law of the land. The select committee hearings on same-sex marriage are chaired by Ruth Dyson Labour with the assistance of Kevin Hague of the Greens.. The national party members of the select committee appear to not want to be there or else seem to be in favour of gay marriage. So basically the Labour Party, despite having lost the last 2 elections, is still running the show on the social front.

So economically the national government is not helping New Zealand to gain any ground or to get people back to work. On the social front they are asleep at the wheel while Labour is essentially running the show. Can anyone remember why we voted for this government again?

Of the 1500 or so fired in response to the offensive: i.e. they wouldn’t have fired 1500 if there wasn’t an offensive, Iron Dome ignored about 700 of them, since they weren’t going to hit anything. Iron Dome tracks the ballistic path and ignores it if it’s going to land in a field or in water.

Congratulations on finding one innocent Israeli fatality though. They’re much harder to find than the innocent Palestinian human beings who are also tragically murdered by thugs.

wat that’s a complete misrepresentation of my position. See, in WWII the Nazis were the bad guys. This is because they started it. They’re the ones who are the aggressors. Now I’m not sure why people like you fail to see the very elementary fact that in this today in Israel, it’s Israel who is the aggressor. Why people like you hallucinate that Israel is acting defensively, I have no idea, because that’s not what we see in fact happening, all the time. If you were a hysterical gibbering idiot who was deaf and blind I could understand one having this opinion, but I get stunned all the time when I see such a fantasy being not just held but promulgated as a serious argument about how the world really is, by people apparently in all other ways, completely compos mentis.

I mean the world should not be this way. How can an entire group of people be so sane in every other setting and yet so collectively bonkers on this one area of distorted reality? It’s a fascinating aspect of modern life.

What don’t you guys get about this not being an ethical value judgement issue. It’s a simple question of fact. Very straight-forward. In population control psychology, what has this offensive resulted in? What things good or bad have changed in the psyche of the population you are trying to manage?

That’s the only question. It’s not an ethical value judgement at all.

And Dresden wasn’t justified in my view. Not in any perspective. It was straight-out slaughter for little military value. It was payback for the blitz and showed Stalin what the UK was prepared to do. But it wasn’t necessary, not if you know your history, how Churchill weighed the equation and what the military situation was in Dresden.

Coventry was a failure of the signals intelligence division to jam the navigation beams that particular night. Yes it was bad as was Nanking. That was shocking.

Gillard has just called the man who’s raised questions about her involvement in a union “slush fund” which used members’ money to buy houses for union officials as:

I can’t recall a Prime Minister on either side of the Tasman launching such an attack on a member of the public (the delightful and cowardly Ron Mark did, of course, make a comment about me that was probably worse, but he’s amounted to nothing). For someone in that position to resort to that sort of a spray suggests a level of desperation, I would say.

Read your input with interest Reid, took me right back to when as a four year old in UK my parents used to pick me up and head for the air raid shelters when the ol’ Nazis came over to bomb seven colours of s–t out of our towns and cities.

Mate, don’t talk to me about Dresden, or Hamburg, or Berlin or Nuremburg or any other of those ‘fine old historic’ German cities. They deserved everything they got, and then some.

And, BTW, the destruction of Dresden wasn’t only legitimate retaliation for damage and deaths sustained in UK – or “payback’ as you put it. It was to assist the Soviet advance into eastern Germany and to continue with the allied campaign of destroying German infrastructure and – yes, people – so much so that they’d never fall for another Hitler ever again!! And so far they haven’t!

Where was the rocket being launched from?

a) The deck of a submarine
b) The middle of a densely populated area
c) From under the cover of date palms in the middle of a desert.

If you think that (b) is the correct answer can you tell us in your own words (500 words or less) exactly how Israeli forces can take out the rocket launching site without endangering Palestinian women & children?

No it wasn’t. Dresden was packed with refugees fleeing the Russians. It was a historic mediaeval wooden city with virtually no defences and nothing strategically significant in terms of war production capability. It was an atrocity same as killing 10,000 Polish Officers in Katyn was an atrocity same as anything the Germans did.

I don’t understand why people hallucinate that a word like “atrocity” can only ever be applied to someone they don’t like. That’s totally mental. And yet people do it all the time. So what if Churchill committed an atrocity. So what if Stalin did. That’s the question to address. And yet people somehow seem to address this like a child, by pretending nothing atrocious happened. What’s with that, because I don’t get that line of thinking at all.

If you think that (b) is the correct answer can you tell us in your own words (500 words or less) exactly how Israeli forces can take out the rocket launching site without endangering Palestinian women & children?

With 0.5 inch sniper rounds at night, using stealth helicopters and infra-red and night vision and everything else the Israelis have freely available to them and I would have been doing this constantly every night, year after year after year since Cast Lead. The only reason it’s difficult to do the same thing at daytime is the RPG.

During the day you’ve got Iron Dome, which as I said, ignore the ones which aren’t going to hit something which is at least 50% and who cares about them.

If I thought about and did some research on what hardware the IDF has I bet I could come up with hundreds, yes hundreds of ways to suppress the rockets by punishing the fuck out of the thugs whilst never harming any innocents at all. Why is it none of you people can do this because if I can the IDF sure could as well and they have, of course. But the leadership pursue another route.

Why can’t you people get this.

The rockets are never going to stop until Israel, who has all the options and all the power, decides to change its tactics, because they’re not working. They aren’t. No-one sane can possibly hallucinate they’re working. But you mentals, at this point, seem to throw up your hands in despair, turn to look at the people who are doing this in response to stimuli and then you just go completely mental.

You munt and moan and rend your clothes at the evil tewwowist thugs, which they are, but never ever think about why they do what they do. What the fuck is it, that stops you from thinking about that?

I think at the end of the day Hitler led the Germans down a garden-path. Prior to Hitler the Germans were the most cohesive civilised nation in Europe. He destroyed German Nationalism.

I once heard someone say that it’s interesting how often someone from outside a nation who comes to lead it, is destructive to it. Hitler, Napoleon, Stalin.

Hitler as you would know made two inexplicable fatal decisions. The first of course was failing to close the trap at Dunkirk. The second was dividing the army between Moscow and the oil-fields in the Caucuses. Apparently the forces between Moscow and his army which had to that point completely decimated all opposition were very light. Just as Hitler could have easily captured the entire British Army at Dunkirk, he could have taken Moscow. And take Moscow, you take Russia. And he did that, twice.

Doesn’t seem very practical, nor is a helicopter a very accurate platform to try to take out enemies using snipers. Not totally safe either…..one of those half inch rounds could ricochet & graze one of the poor Palestinians & then the handwringers would get all upset again.

The Israelis could stop the rockets tomorrow. All they have to do is flatten everything in Palestine that stands more than 300mm high. They have the capability & the longer the Hamas retards keep targeting Israeli citizens the more likely it is to happen. Israel is surrounded by madmen dedicated to its destruction & my guess is that the more ordnance is lobbed over its sovereign borders the more resolute its people & government will become.

The Palestinian problem is not about Palestine otherwise hostilities would have ended long ago. Rather it is a festering wound kept open by a rabid Islamic ME determined to destroy Israel.

The feeling of nationalism that Hitler gave the Germans was one of the reasons they went to war, they wanted land back in Poland and in France that they thought was rightfully theirs.

Oh it was, by the Versailles Treaty. The Germans suffered more than any other European people during the depression until Hitler came along. That was his base. But it wasn’t destroyed.

What Hitler did is he used that proportion of every population and we have them too, that under the right conditions they will commit barbarism without limit, and he imprinted the guilt of those few onto the proud and hitherto civilised German psyche.

The feeling of nationalism that Hitler gave the Germans was one of the reasons they went to war, they wanted land back in Poland and in France that they thought was rightfully theirs.

Set it up. Knock it down.

IMO, that’s what happened.

Have you read BTW Chester Wilmot’s book on WWII. The Struggle for Europe is brilliant.

Just for a moment,
ignore the reality that as Einstein correctly said, “religion is simply childish”, and the fact that space research has now covered billions of miles in every direction without spotting an old bearded bugger in a nightie and sandals, let alone several billion harp-playing angels.
Let’s pretend instead that there actually is an all-powerful God, able to control earthly events. Well, put yourself in his place, perhaps sitting quietly having breakfast with Mrs God or enjoying a round of heavenly golf, if enjoyment is possible with the certain knowledge of 18 holes-in-one, or whatever God gets his kicks from, and being constantly interrupted by earthly snivelling to change his mind about this and that, which is what prayer essentially constitutes.
Wonderful though God supposedly is, even he would eventually snap and lash out with a few city-destroying earthquakes, volcanoes, floods and whatnot, and who could blame him? So in the interest of giving God a bit of peace and quiet, everyone of a mystical disposition should show some consideration and knock off this constant skyward braying. It’s not doing you any good.
