Agreed PEB, of those four questions only one is not widely known and unless we get to read the note (if one exists) we’ll never know for sure why. I’m surprised Telecom is letting its logo be associated with scantily clad women.

labrator – thats incorrect – the wider public only know 1 of those – the pancreatic cancer part of it wasn’t really reported. You don’t really need a note if you’ve been diagnosed with terminal cancer though, so I guess a note won’t really shine further light on it.

I have read it, the story that the cover leads is explosive.
Extraordinary tale.
Typical Whale, he has left people hanging with more questions once you have finished reading it. But he always has more. This looks like a deliberate ploy to try and trap somebody into a denial.
The full story reads like a Paul Thomas IHAKA novel. If the whole thing comes out we may well see a Leveson style inquiry in this country.

Bigfish – why should it?

Classy or intellectual would not suit either the target market or its editor. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it – let the invisible hand deal to it if it is really unwanted, rather than expect everyone to share your values.

I don’t buy science fantasy either, but I don’t place moralistic expectations on the genre to suit my own tastes. There is obviously an audience, or it wouldn’t sell. I suspect the same will be true for the evolving ‘Truth’.

I would like to say that the Classy and Intellectual market is already catered for by newspapers in the country, b ut that would be going a step too far… But I wonder whether it wouldn’t have similar circulation numbers to the ‘Truth’ if one did exist anyway…

How on earth are the likes of Shane Jones & Trev now gonna go about buying the Truth tomorrow without now feeling “some” guilt with all this attention being brought on by all this “calendar girl” talk!

Then again never mind Shane and Trev, what’s the rest of the Labour & Green MP’s gonna do when the newspaper is being read in their caucus rooms (to catch up with the political gossip … of course) or is left lying around with the front page standing out?

Will eyes be averted?

Will the women MP’s carefully cut-out the calendar girl? Will Shane or Trev volunteer to take away the rubbish bins before they fill up with food?

Will, after week after week of front page calendar girls, the “old guard” protest by burning their bras, on live TV? Darian, Annette, any other volunteers?

I can’t see what difference it would be if the page 3 girl was missing from front page for just one week, or even long term. Do you think it would mean somebody wouldn’t buy the issue otherwise?

Anyway the Truth just needs to do what the DomPost and NZ Herald does – they put their scantily dressed women (and occasional men) in the top mast head. There problem fixed!

In fact, I’d say the NZ Herald and DomPost are worse, their mast heads occassionally feature random unsuspecting kiwis (like teens at the beach), whereas at least the Truth use paid models!

Why would I want to buy a newspaper full of ads for dildos? That can be slightly embarrassing to be seen with.
A minor purchase like the purchase of a paper is generally a marginal spur of the moment decision.
The smallest doubt will make someone not bother or choose another paper instead

People are thinking out whether to buy a copy or not as if they are buying a car.

Bought a copy. Feeling slightly icky after actually reading it.

Will stick with the blog for now, but they need to up the content (equivalent of about 4 blog posts in there for the sum of $2.80) and reduce the smut. I could handle a little, but I couldn’t read that newspaper either in the office or at home. If I have to feel embarrassed even to hold the damn thing its not going to work! Its like claiming to read Playboy for the articles…
