So what?

November 7th, 2012 at 10:00 am by David Farrar

The Herald reports:

An assistant principal who posted racy photographs of herself on her profile faces a review by her school’s board of trustees after the images circulated among her students.

Kylie Fullerton, who teaches at Glen Eden Intermediate School in Auckland, is understood to have uploaded a photograph of herself in a red bikini and set it as her main Facebook profile picture.

So what? Lots of NZ women have photos of them in a bikini.

On the same profile the 34-year-old had details about where she worked and another photo of herself in high heels, black lace underwear and a white shirt.

So she had a couple of sexy shots. From the sound of it, they are miles away from indecent. Unless she is accepting friends requests from students on her FB page – I think a non-issue.

For them to get circulated she was either friending students or had her privacy settings screwed up (which many people do, particularly the “friends of friends” one for photos).

This is actually a real issue in this “social media” age. I did a seminar for a law firm on the employment implications of things posted on facebook and similar sites – there have already been some interesting cases on it in NZ, and of course many more in the US. Some of them make very amusing reading….particularly where someone has forgotten that they have added the boss as a “friend” and then proceeded to denigrate both the boss and the workplace generally to all his or her 300 “friends”.

It is going to be particularly problematic for the young….photos of you spewing, taking drugs, or showing your norks might be hilarious when you are 22, but not so funny at 42….and as I know only too well, one’s foolishness in the past can have devastating consequences many years later.

Kiwigreg:Why should they? The silly girl has put herself out in the public domain – which is what facebook is – meaning “the public” can access all of these details. In this instance, the media is simply acting as the agents of the (prurient) public…just as they do when attending a court hearing, which is open to the public.

I will bet a penny to pound of bat shit that most of you on here who are also on facebook have NEVER read the terms and conditions upon which you signed up? How many are aware that “privacy settings” can be altered by fb without reference to you if the proprietors wish to?

Before you tick that little box saying “I agree” on any website, particularly one on which you put personal and potentially embarrassing information about yourself, you should always READ THE CONDITIONS! Of course very few ever will…I know…it’s sad being a semi-employed legal geek with time on your hands…

She is a good looking woman – who would blame her for wanting to take some shots. Putting them on Facebook wasn’t smart – but I don’t think she should lose her job over it.

I avoid the Hoorald…. But I suspect you’re referring to Joanne Peony Ash (40) – the Northland teacher who was convicted of her third drink drive conviction and sentenced to community detention for a raft of offences including DIC. I’d say that her sacking was inevitable. But I was unaware that the Education Board sacked her rather than her BOT.

But regardless of who fired her, the correct action was taken. Given her total disregard for the Law, I wouldn’t want her teaching my kids either.

    http://www.northernadvocate.co.nz/news/teacher-repeat-drink-offender/1530566/

But if there is a teacher who was sacked “for receiving a traffic fine” then that seems absurd.

I’d argue that it shows lack of judgment and common sense on the media’s part. Why should the public consider it immature for a woman to be wearing attractive clothing and showing off her (presumably) good form? If a male teacher had posted a photo of himself in speedos or was in an underwear advertisement similar to Dan Carter’s, would we have any problem with that? Children do not need to be shielded from ‘sexuality’ – but rather responsibly educated on acceptable boundaries. Being proud of your body and having a healthy sex life falls into this category. Society still has a long way to go before it can call itself progressive and non-sexist.

A society can be judged to be “progressive” when immature exhibitionism can be publicly indulged in without comment by employers.

You should ask the host that question but his comments in the post infer the same criticism I make of her treatment. But whatever the answer, the fact of the matter is that her personal freedom is threatened and if she had not posted a photo of herself in a bikini it would not be. Or, if she had simply gone to the beach, worn her bikini, been photographed by some flea pap type photographer and had her photo plastered all over the front page of the Daily Crud, she wouldn’t be under threat. That is the point and the fact that there is a degree of jocularity in the comments doesn’t alter the point. It is only a non-story to someone who is quite ambivalent about or even approving of subjugation of personal freedom to their own perceptions of social order. No lines have been crossed here. She wasn’t flashing the gash, cavorting in a gang bang or doing anything that could even remotely be considered as impinging upon contemproary norms of propriety in such a way as to compromise her job as a teacher. I think that is the point of the post. She posted a phot of her in a bikini. Big fucking deal. What if she had caught a 30lb snapper wearing it and sent the photo into the Fishing News? So what?

Unfortunate for her credibility perhaps, but if she is, in all other respects, a great teacher, then surely a warning and some lessons with respect to the risks of social networking sites and with respect to using one’s discretion might suffice. I’d hate to see a decent teacher lose their job over something like that.
