Too true. Whistle-blowing can be fraught with difficulties. Public organisations are supposed to have specific systems in place, but I doubt their efficacy as having such a system is usually just a box-ticking compliance exercise.
Unfortunately, many paedophiles are very good at concealing themselves and will find their way into institutions such as schools and churches where they can gain positions of trust that allow access to young people. Of course, everyone who deals with young people knows this, so it is important that all of the organisations involved examine their dealings with this person.

Unfortunately in New Zealand there is a tendency to shoot the messenger when it comes to whistle-blowing. Very few companies or organisations seem to have the correct procedures in place for dealing with whistle-blowing allegations in an objective and fair manner. It is particularly bad for the whistle-blower if the accused has a close relationship with their manager.

So Lovatt Davis was one of the few to raise concerns about Parker being a pedophile, and the NZEI response is to denigrate her as being “one or two sandwiches short of the proverbial”.

Isn't ridicule supposed to be reserved for conspiracy theorists and people who see UFOs?

So the NZEI is investigating what happened in 1999. Well and good, and no doubt their members will want to know what happened. I trust comments will be similarly severe on any other organisation who had members bearing some culpability in this case.

With your usual acute judge of credibility (setting aside the odd thousand conspirational YouTube videos of course), could you tell from the radio interview whether Lovatt Davies is a ‘leftie’ also?

I would be very disappointed if NZEI members did NOT ask questions of their office-holders and staff mikenmild. If the conduct of a rogue NZEI person enabled Parker to go on abusing children who trusted him it will be a tragedy, especially for those children who could have been spared abuse had the person done the right thing from the outset.

I’m just not sure why this blog is singling out the NZEI, of all the individuals and organisations that were arguably in a position to stop this man earlier. You seem quite confused about what the NZEI is. If anyone suggest that it is a professional body; someone here will say it’s only a union. Are you now saying otherwise.
Do you think that NZEI members might be interested in asking question of their office holders and professional staff?

It’s more their supercilious self-righteousness mm. I think that led them to a quick nay instant judgement on this man and because in their own minds, lefties are the bestest people in the whole wide world, with all the humanity and all the wisdom and all the goodness just bursting from them all the time, that anyone who didn’t agree with them was totally and completely wrong and therefore had to be stopped, before they could wreck more damage than they’d already done, upon the glorious plan.

@ mikenmild – if allegations of inappropriate behaviour by a teacher were made, I would expect the union’s primary concern to be the safety of children, not whether or not the allegations might be embarrassing for the teacher concerned and for NZEI. After all, NZEI is forever going on about being focused on outcomes for children.

Lovatt Davis is interviewed by Mary Wilson: about 1:30 in. She’s a serious intelligent person. Hard to understand why some people got the wrong end of the stick, but that’s not unusual with lefties is it. Normally it’s their modus operandi. Surprising it doesn’t happen more often.

David, I’m wondering why you focus on the role of the NZEI in this mess. It would appear that this low-life, like many of his ilk, appeared credible to many people who should have known better. Unions often get bad mouthed when they are obliged to support criminal members. I have been in the position of a union delegate being asked ‘how could you stand up for so-and-so’. I’d like to know more about the case before deciding that of all those involved, the union delegates or staff were the most culpable.

Head should roll over this. Not only did the NZEI fail these adolescent boys but so did the police, CYF and even the grandparents of one of the boys who persuaded him to retract his allegation as it could ruin this paedophile’s career.
